I always said when I retire I'll do gardening. Last few years I've been watching videos, I've experimented last year with coriander/cilantro, from seed in the kitchen sill, I used a used water bottle for humidity, it sort of grey but tiny midget leaves, I tasted a leaf, it was alright, used it once in my finished food. Snipped top layer & got maybe ten tiny leaves, that was it, didn't grow, still no idea at which stage I killed it. On April 1st was my bestie's birthday, since she keeps her garden tidy & sometimes grows tomatoes, I gifted her a personalised gardening set & got her organic tomato seeds, she quickly planted lots, gave some to her mother in law & kept some for her self & got me lots, I'm biting my nails, so far they're doing well in the kitchen window, they've grown double now. I'm really dreading the next step, actually planting them outside. In my mind is, this is the time I'm going to kill perfectly healthy leaves. I've got two feeds for them, I think its bonemeal and another liquid called baby bio plant feed, so I've come to watch my favourite Jeff videos to maximise their chance of survival

I’ve tried spacing large beefsteak tomatoes at 28” but several years ago I went with 36”. They need about 3 foot spacing to get enough airflow. My tomatoes have done extremely well for me. Always over 6’ tall. I’m blessed with great soil and I’m in the garden everyday to prune, tie them and keep a close eye on them.
@TheRipeTomatoFarms Жыл бұрын
I don't doubt it John. Some varieties are just huge....no tomato plant ever complained about TOO much space! :-)
@urbugnmetoday31837 ай бұрын
If you keep them trimmed up, even single or double stemmed you can keep them closer and still have good airflow and not fight for sun

This is the 1st time I have 7 tomato plants (2 in smart bags) growing in a small backyard. I managed to space them 18 inches apart. They seem very happy thus far. Jeff, the blueberry tomatoes are delicious. Wish there was a way I could send you some seeds.

Unless you are really space restricted,I plant my tomato’s 4 ft apart and the rows 5’ apart. My plants thrive and it’s much easier to weed and pick with more space. The plant yields are also higher!

With the forecasted switch to El Nino, do you factor that change into how/what you'll be growing? My area in Socal is projected to be cooler than average, so Im delaying my summer cover crop of cowpeas in favor of growing more tomatoes.

I'm in the UK tomatoes are not great grown outside here, I'm in a very rainy area on the coast. I also grow my tomatoes in grow bags not the ground, in a greenhouse. I get really good yields every year. Deep soil isn't compulsory for tomatoes in my experience. I also don't trim off the side shoots either, unless they get to bushy. The only strict rule for me is liquid feed, airflow and not wetting the leaves. Thats it. Super simple plant to grow and deliciousness supreme.
