With Vegetable Gardens, Plant Spacing Is The First Thing We Should Think About. Plants start out very small, and too often we plant them close together, not wanting to see unsightly empty spaces in our garden. The mistake however, is that plants grow, often beyond what we imagine them to. And the spacing they experience as young plants quickly evaporates and over crowding ensues.
In this video, I show you the two common mistakes we make when spacing our plants, both for direct seeding and planting starter plants. As well, I go through the three factors that we need to consider when spacing out our crops to ensure maximum success.

Wish I had seen this video before planting...I started my first garden this year before doing any research; my cantaloupe is growing all over the place; I didn’t know how many squash one plant would produce...I planted 14! Now that I know which plants are vines, which will spread out, which are vertical growers, I look forward to planting next year! I love your method of tying tomatoes, I used twine and bamboo stakes; I’m 30 and I think I’ve found a new hobby; I love gardening! Thanks so much for your informative videos!

Kiara yay for planting your first garden! If I may make a suggestion...try using old torn sheet strips to tie up your tomatoes. I used to use twine but found the wind can still blow the tomato plants around and twine can be abrasive and damage the stalks. Old ripped sheets are much softer. I use them for anything in the garden and flower bed that needs staking! Let us know how your garden does okay?!

sherrylynn 46 My husband bought some tomato ties but when I finally needed to use them I couldn’t find them; they finally reappeared & I was like great, I don’t need them now; but after reading your comment, I might redo them the next time I’m off using the ties. I planted 8 tomato plants (6 Roma & 2 Better Boys). I wish I had done cherry tomatoes too. What’s your favorite tomato plant? I’ll try more next year! & thanks for the suggestion!

@@kiarab.1662 We like Early Girl, Big Boy and Better Boys! We put in some Beef Steak for sandwiches of course lol and some cherry tomatoes. We put in some called "Manitoba" too, we've never seen them before so it will be interesting to see what they're like! We always plant Lemon Boys too for family who like lower acid tomatoes but we couldn't find any this year. I always say tomato starters are like puppies...they're so cute when they're little and they just keep following us home lol! It's so rewarding to grow your own food!

Thinning out & spacing is so hard to do when you’re so excited to grow! I over-seeded my Brussel sprout s and beets because I was unsure that they’d all sprout, but they all did and now I have to thin but it just feels horrible 🥺. I also crowded about 8 PEPPER PLANTS in one 5 gal pot!!!!!!! They look healthy now at about 3 months old, but it should be interesting to see how they perform later in the season 😬.

Last year, I grew my stuff in fabric pots. In my 20 gal tomato pot, I planted my Early Girl tomato, three cucumber plants, some marigolds and nasturtiums. The cucumbers and tomatoes produced fairly well. The nasturtiums and marigolds, not so much. Don't get me wrong, the flowers did bloom; but, they did not spread out and flourish the way the nasturtiums and marigolds did in the other pots. I don't think they got enough sun; but, the tomatoes and cucumbers did.

Hi Jeff, another great video. I'm watching your videos chronologically now so that I don't miss any. Just a quick note on peppers. I've found over the years that it's better to plant 2 peppers in a pot or space. Each single plant may have a reduced yield, but combined they produce much more than they would alone, and it saves so much space. To stop unwanted cross breeding I isolate the flowers with little cloth bags before they open. Take care...

Just curious those are pretty huge plants for such tiny containers. Do you think You might have problems with the root system not able to fully recover because of the taproot being twisted around such as what happens when you have large plants in small containers especially young ones. It causes a lot of issues with the root system and the plant is not able to fully grow to its full genetic value. Are usually do air pruning. It really helps develop a great Root system

With some varieties maybe... Certainly not nightshades... Not with the ability to send out adventitious roots. Even Zucchinis can send out the stem roots. Within a week, they are zooming ahead

I planted a bunch of tomato seeds and I thought they weren't going to come out and then all of a sudden I start seeing a bunch of little seedlings. They are too close together, can I uproot them and transplant them. My zucchinis are already larger but I can tell they're just too close together can I do the same there? Thanks.

Seeds are definitely less expensive than starts, but by no means are they “cheap”. In fact, I see fewer and fewer seeds inside the seed packets but the prices are not reducing-inflation seems to be everywhere. Thanks a lot Joe Brandon and Company!!!
