Tomatoes need a balanced fertilizer. That's not what blossom end rot (BER) is at all. BER is caused by a lack of calcium in plant tissues. If flowers drop then there is no fruit to develop BER because BER is fruit-related. Flower drop is caused by lack of pollination and potentially stressed plants. Most of the time, it's related to high heat temperatures. To get some of the issues you speak of, it may happen if one goes overboard on nitrogen. The better advice is to give tomatoes a balanced fertilizer until fruiting and then back off on nitrogen a little, but not completely.

Will Epsom Salt and Gypsum help minimize the chances of BER if growing in a container with a drip irrigation system? I’m giving tomatoes a first shot this year. Never grown one but willing to spend a little cash to do it the correct way

@@lovemytide45 Gypsum is a great addition that will help with BER along with consistent watering to ensure the uptake of calcium. The cultivar you choose is also a big player. As far as epsom, it's magnesium sulfate and offers benefit when other nutrients are available as well. For instance, my water-soluble fertilizer includes the addition of epsom and calcium nitrate to complete the recipe. So, it depends on what you feed the plant that matters. Epsom isn't an end-all, be-all. It's just a part. Make sure your feed includes all needed nutrients. If you're going organic, in containers, you shouldn't go full on organic fertilizers because most containers are filled with a mix that has almost no fertilizers in it and organic fertilizers require an establish soil web to break down organics. I still add it as part of the overall plan, but heavily rely on non organics that feed instantly.

I chose containers because I have ALS and it will require less walking for me. Also, EVERY tomato I have bought over the past year tastes like a watermelon rind 🤢 it will be a good hobby for me

I have a few additional questions . Here is my setup with my questions to follow. I live in Zone 7B. North Alabama. Full sun. I have 1 Indeterminate (Better Boy Plus) in a 25 gallon Smart Cloth Pot (21” Diameter) and 1 Determinate (Bush Goliath) in a 20 Gallon Smart Cloth Pot (19” Diameter) … Both planted with some Miracle Grow Potting Soil, Mushroom Compost, Copper Fungicide, Gypsum, Powdered Bone Meal, Epsom Salt and some good ol’ worm poo castings for fun. I’m not a 100% organic gardener and plan on using Miracle Grow Fertilizer occasionally during my 2 week feedings . I am setting up a micro drip irrigation system with 6” spacing on the drip holes. ( I have 9” hole spacing if needed) I plan on coiling the drip irrigation hose around the base of my tomato plant and continue to coil the drip irrigation hose around the top of the pot to make a spiral pattern with about 4” - 6” between my coiled drip irrigation hose as the spiral forms. First tomato’s ever. Either in ground or in container . My questions. .. 1. How often and for how long should I water ? Especially starting off. Current temp is 83 degrees. I’m guessing 20 minutes every other day starting at about 06:30 or am I way off on this?. 2. As the temperature increases, do I start watering more frequently or simply increase time of watering ? Thanks so much to anyone that can toss me a guideline on micro irrigation.

Anything organic must be broken down by bacteria to the to become available. So, it's not fast-acting. It is better to add to compost and use compost after a few months of breaking down. Use the whole peel in compost. An alternative is to compost directly in the soil next to, but not touching the plant. There's no magic organic elixers out there.
