I still believe that Tomb Raider is the greatest video game of all time. If you grew up in the 70s or 80s, you’ll understand why. It redefined and changed gaming forever. It’s impossible to overstate just how revolutionary it was and what it paved the way for. Toby Gard deserves far more recognition than he’s received.

That sense of isolation was a huge reason I loved this game so much. I hope they get back to that and away from the human enemies and support crews. It could be a thing, her guides and support always die at the start and she is left alone. They'd get to be like Kenny from South Park. :D Loved the retrospective and this game is an absolute favorite of mine too. I was sixteen when it came out and I'm a female. Lara was an inspiration. I loved her fearlessness.

I have similar experience. As i played Tomb Raider with my dad. I also blame the dark monitor for many issues when we were stuck. I remember that we closed the window, etc to make the room darker, so the monitor is more visible. Also my dad brought home printed walkthroughs, because we were just stuck. The only difference is that we started with TR4 and i love that one, basically my first proper 3D game.

I remember when I was a kid, me and my brother was watching this Danish TV programme called "Troldspejlet" which was really the only show on TV that covered video game and where you could actually see gameplay from them. One day they did a review of a PS1 game called "Pandemonium" and in the footage there was this girl protagonist that would bounce on these giant watermelons. We didn't catch the name of the game though but we really wanted to play it. So the following weekend my mom took us to the video rental store to see if they had it. My brother would sprint over the counter and demand that we got that playstation game with that lady that jumped around with the huge melons... So naturally the game we got was Tomb Raider xD

Just finished TR1 on PC. It was interesting to get your hands on it after 25 years! And yes, it is still great game! I played it with an upgrade called CROFTENGINE, so the in-game music is also included, the image is adapted to the wide monitors, and the graphic is also improved. The water is wonderful. There is also a depth of field effect. But I don't recommend turning on the dynamic lights because they eliminate the shadow maps. I like TR games if they are a bit pixelated, there is an option for that too. I'm sorry that Croftengine is only compatible with TR1, it would be nice to be able to play all TR sequels like this. But I'll play them again nevertheless, now I'm starting TR2 :) I hate rebooted trilogy (Tomb Rambo...). The atmosphere is too brutal in there. But I don't like Lara's movements in the post-TR5 sequels either. The movements in TR1-TR5 are really beautiful and believable, here I feel that Lara belongs in the 3D space. This feeling disappears with the new parts.

My favorite video game since 1996. Great review!
@The-Man-On-The-Mountain Жыл бұрын
The main theme and Longing for home are my favorite songs, not from TR1, but from the whole franchise. This is the most important and favorite game in my life. My parents bought me the Saturn because I saw a VHS promo for the Sega Saturn at a friend's house and it had the intro from Panzer Dragoon and the gameplay of Virtua Fighter, and I was mesmerized and got totally obsessed. But when TR came out, and I bought it, I think that that was my most magical and amazing experience with the video games. The best part, is that it lasted months, because at that time there was no internet, no KZbin, no playthroughs... and the guides were expensive and I found them uninteresting. One of my favorite levels is the cistern, because I got stuck there for almost a month, because I totally missed an underwater passage who led to a switch. When I finally found it, that was magical. The way the devs took advantage of the blocky graphics and low res textures, to force exploration and make you to get lost, was amazing. That's why better graphics make TR a worse experience, because natural features look more natural, and artificial features more artificial, so devs have to paint the things you can grab. That way the path is always more obvious. And I love puzzles, but I love much much more to explore and get lost. I really hate obvious paths. It makes the experience so flat... Guess why I bought the PSX... because the rest of the TR were for the Sony's console. Just for that reason. And I even bought the first one for the PSX. At that time I had my first job (16 years old) and I could afford all of that. One of the fun facts about this game is that it's got its own Mandela effect, very famous: the room with the two bridges at Peru, many people have got a very vivid memory of one of the two bridges collapsing. That never happened, but I am one of those people. I'd swear to God that one of the bridges collapsed. It's the only Mandela effect that I've experienced, and till this day, it's still difficult to admit despite the evidence lol.
@McLarenMercedes9 ай бұрын
They collapsed in the *Anniversary remake* . Hence the false memory from the original game. Mandela Effect is aptly named. It's whatever ignoramus/idiot who was stupid enough not to know Nelson Mandela hadn't died in prison (tons of "Free Mandela" slogans in all media was somehow missed by this clown) when he was set free in the 1990's . I mean you had to be a special kind of idiot to believe that. Steve Biko died in prison (choked to death actually). Whoever came up with this ridiculous effect - which btw *has zero validity outside the net* - erroneously picked the right name. To me this very name sounds like I-was-a-complete-idiot-because-I-believed-something-nobody-else-did-effect. Here's the *real effect* Different people have different memory abilities. Some people have fantastic, photographic memories and remember things they learned as a child while in school or can name every single English/British king/queen in chronological order or the birth date of all their friends and relatives. Others have *poor memories* and to them memories are just a hodgepodge of feelings, shreds and fragments. It's not really their fault their long-term memory simply isn't developed. Here's another factor to consider. Some people have the ability to recognize and be constantly aware of their bad memory. They know this and therefore have no issues discovering they simply don't remember some things or the name of some people they work with. Then there are those who have bad memory *but are almost totally oblivious to it* . Among these you'll find the most obnoxious people. Because they insist they are right when they haven't a clue. And when you actually *show them the facts* they're petty-minded enough not to ADMIT they were wrong, remembered wrong or were *proven wrong* and instead made up a silly effect to justify their own bad memory. "and till this day, it's still difficult to admit despite the evidence lol." Well, textbook example right there. You didn't think of reasons and explanations why you remembered it wrong but ascribed to an effect of pop-culture. Aside from this happening in the Anniversary remake of Tomb Raider there is another plausible explanation. Rickety looking wooden suspension bridges are shown in both motion pictures as well as cartoons to collapse. Hollywood movies have had a ton of them break apart for excitement of a scene. Yet another explanation is something called *confirmation bias* . When some people claim they believe something some will believe this is correct because they already believed it themselves and won't question it like a reasonable person would. This is simple group psychology which can be easily observed in experiments and in which it's rather scary how a group of people informed to tell a lie will get a test person to agree with that same lie. Yes, *real experiments* not your Mandela effect of which there is no scientific research because it's all made-up to excuse people who can't admit they were wrong all this time. "One of the fun facts about this game is that it's got its own Mandela effect, very famous" Very famous? *Where?* Confirmation bias. "One of the fun facts about this game" You're portraying it as it if were a real event, which is what fact means. If it's *wrong* it can't be a fact can it? And let me raise a warning finger here: Those videos you see on YT and TikTok and whatever called "fun facts" are mostly utter nonsense. You're on thin ice here... "many people have got a very vivid memory of one of the two bridges collapsing" Speak for yourself. Say *I have got a very vivid memory* next time. Who are these "many people" you hide behind? "Many people" isn't an argument either, it's a fallacy called Argumentum Ad Populum. Many people believed the Earth is flat or that Einstein invented the atomic bomb. Doesn't make them right. "Many people" is a poor argument. "That never happened, but I am one of those people." At least you admit it but I don't see you saying you were *wrong* anywhere. "I'd swear to God that one of the bridges collapsed" Well, perhaps that's the explanation. If reason, facts and science were your guiding lights you wouldn't swear to God you remembered a frickin' game wrong. "it's still difficult to admit despite the evidence lol." Word of advice. *Never* say this again. For your own sake. You're willingly proclaiming yourself a fool with such a sentence. Is it so difficult to accept you *remembered it wrong* ? How is that such a hard pill for you to swallow? "It's the only Mandela effect that I've experienced," But with your memory and ignorance it's almost certain many others will emerge in the future. Like I said, it's a pure memory thing and confirmation bias in a deadly cocktail. HOW do you know you didn't remember other things wrong? Person A: "Is there a reasonable and plausible explanation for this?" Person B: "I don't care. I already know it's whatever nonsense-effect I've read on the net (this way I can rationalize my own ignorance)." Guess who you are?

Great review! I will never forget the excitement I had, when I finally got my hands on this as a kid in 96. I had looked at the previews and knew I wanted it. Just being amazed at how different this game was. 3D games were still relatively new, and to see a game like this, with a character like LARA..blew my mind. Even now, I can still appreciate the amount of details put into crafting each level, I could appreciate the grid system inside of TR for what it was doing, and everything they did really made it have its own identity. The music, and everything...just good times all around. I miss THIS Lara/Tomb Raider.

You say the graphics aged poorly, and I agree (two words, triangle boobies... also braid tie without braid doesn't help), but that's one part we can change now with sourceports, like I put it through OpenLara on my phone, and it adds shaders, shine and smoothness for everything, I added the mod that gives her FMV model with bead braid from cutscenes, more polygons, HQ weapons and 3D item pickups (flashes lighting the rooms like in later games is also nice). Official mobile version uses old models but HD textures so looks more or less decent (still Lara needs a better model and at least a braid mod)... though I think it is delisted. Far more options to play on PC so we can keep gameplay, level design and music of original, but update the graphics.

I'll probably always stick with the PlayStation version, but it's cool that we have so many options nowadays.

I just finished this for the first time a couple years ago. we only ever got the playstation as a rental and the game Was too hard to finish during those times. I was not aware that this came with a DOS emulator on steam, caught me by surprise. great game for the time, aged a lot better than almost everything else.

This game is a real masterpiece. Rediscovering it recently, we see that each level is perfectly well designed and clear in what you can or cannot do, Unlike a TR3 which sometimes lacks visibility on this point. A complex level design that pushes us into our last entrenchments but always fair. But also, through all these levels, we see that the game always offers us new ideas, new atmospheres and constantly renews our interest, So the fatigue never sets in. It’s really crafty work at this point. And for me, this game really has the best soundtrack: each piece of music is perfect for conveying the desired emotion and we always stay in the room to contemplate the surroundings when the main theme of the game begins. This game is really a beautiful little gem (though, no thanks for showing us the most disturbing death of the game, I don’t feel good now.)

Finished the game for the first time yesterday (despite having grown up playing the house tutorials over and over) and I agree that Natla's Mines are a pain in the ass. Doesn't feel like a tomb, or some exciting long forgotten area to explore (let's just pretend all the ammo and medpacks in the other levels are a gift from the gods 😅) AND the pickups are practically invisible in the light and against the floor assets. I've been playing the remastered version and it's the same with either graphics (I kept toggling between the two). Bit of a pain when you want to collect everything 😅

The first Tomb Raider by Core Design would be in my list of top 10 favorite all time games. There is a special feel about this first game that is hard to replicate by the following sequels. The fact that there aren't much human enemies, combined with the design of the settings make it feel like you're the first person to step foot in an ancient place in a thousand year. Despite the graphic engine being old, they're something about it that give the the landscape a great sense of depth and elevation. The puzzles are just challenging enough where you don't need to rely on walkthrough, but the game was more gearing toward platforming and climbing which is an aspect I liked. I think later in the series they concentrated too much on convoluted puzzles which I don't like. Egypt was my favorite settings, actually I enjoyed all the levels. I actually like the TombATI version with hd mods more than the Aspyr Remastered version because I felt it retains the classic feel of the game more, and you can use software like antimicro to map keyboard to game controller.

THIS was the first 3D game i had. Well my Sister bought the PSX since it had "some tetris games and pinball" (and my cousin could put in a chip to play burned cds of course) and THIS was the first game we had. We didn't had any Memory card (i didn't know that i need one) so i played the first 3 levels again and again and again and i still can remember everything almost blind :-D my sister gifted me the official walkthrough book for my birthday that year and i bought myself a Memory card and played this game on and on and on :D the offical walkthrough had several (kinda bad) jokes in it which was kinda funny back then second game i think i've played was Abes Oddysee as a Demo and later on a burned CD.. it was ok but the NEXT game that hit me was Resident Evil 1. A game were the character SPOKE and the camera perspectives looked like IN THE MOVIES! Also my sister "used" the PSX so i had to do the cleaning and stuff otherwise she would hid the cables, the memory cards or controllers. (the other TR games i played on my PC... with the keyboard and yeah... it worked)

The PAL version of TR1 is not as good as the NTSC due to a lower framerate and more input lag but yes the controls do get more responsive in TR2 and the input lag issue is not a problem there. My favourite of the originals is TR1 as i love the locations, the music and the atmosphere. I love the music in the old games but TR1 has the best music

I'm not sure. The best part is finally being able to play the add-ons on a console. I don't really care too much about graphics, but I guess it's cool for new audiences to experience these games that way.

Which game do you think is the best in the series? Right now I’m either thinking it’s this game or TR3. I’ve always been torn on how strong of a character Lara was. There’s games around now that give characters way more development, but I think Lara’s characterisation in the older games was tied into what you do during gameplay and more of an immergent narrative thing.
@GFrom2 жыл бұрын
It used to be TR3. After reviewing it recently and really hating the London Levels, I'd now say the first game is my favourite. There is just something timeless about it, even though it hasn't aged as well on a technical level. I really do like the newer games too, but they're hard to compare.

The Cistern only requires you to raise the water level once. Do all the offshoots and then raise the water level when you return to the main chamber for the last time. It is still a horrible level that I hate.

The thing that bothers me in this video is that this version of the game is the PAL version so the game runs at 50hz, unlike the NTSC version which that version runs at 60hz. The game feels slow and it bothers me. Sorry

I still Like the Game because of its slow gameplay especially in a Time Everything must be faster and faster. But TR 2 with his more Combat focused gameplay in combination with the clumsy controlls aged worse in my eyes.

Great vid, if a LOT too long for me. I had a very similar experience to you when I was 'younger.' I'm older than you, so I wasn't a 'kid' when I discovered TR. But, ya, I FRIGGIN' *LOVED* that game, just like you! I played it on PC with and without Voodoo grfx enhancements. The Voodoo enhancements just BLEW MY MIND! Sooooooo AWESOME! The Voodoo PC version looks a MILLION times better than the PS1, and even the REGULAR PC version looks way better. Seeing the PS1 version just makes me CRINGE! Sooooo blocky and pixelated! Yuck! Anyway, I could talk about TR for HOURS, but no one cares what *I* think. Thx for the memories!
