Going by the timing from when you first begin shooting to when the monster's death animation begins (rather than when it ends) the time to kill is Handguns = 96 seconds = 566 shots (approx 6 shots/sec) Magnums = 48 seconds = 283 shots fired (approx 6 shots/sec) SMG = 38 seconds = 565 shots fired (approx 15 shots/sec) Shotgun = 33 seconds = 30 shots (approx 1.1 sec per shot)

Nice side-by-side comparison! BTW, I once did the math to see how many rounds it would take from each gun to take out the giant mutant/Atlantean/torso man. It was something like: - 500 rounds each from the pistols and uzis - 250 rounds from the magnums - around 30 rounds from the shotgun

The shotgun is an absolute beast weapon in all the class TR games. Which is odd considering it's usually the first extra weapon you get. You even start with it in TR2.

True, but lack of ammo available is it's main drawback. Thus you only ever want to use it on the strongest enemies. Even then, the M16 and grenade launcher trump it in TR2.

The shotgun has a limited reach. It is best in close combat.

But it loses accuracy and inflicts less damage the further away you are from the enemy. Test it on a wolf or a lion from varying distances and you will see. You can even compare the shotgun spread when firing at a wall, the spread is tighter when firing close to wall. Pretty neat for a 1996 game 😊

Never pistols. Only in levels, where you haven't got other guns, or if you have not any ammo to other guns. Even you can shoot to windows by for example uzis.

What weapon is best depends on the situation, and time alone is not the best of measuring anyway. This particular boss is very dangerous, but as his speed is against him the shotgun works here, as you need to get away after each shot anyway, and then the shot can best do as much damage as possible. Now the shot gun is slow, but as you move after every shot, that is hardly of any consequence. The pistols may come out with the lowest time here (which I expected) they are not useless. After all they got unlimited ammo, and on most enemies the trick is to get yourself to a spot where you can shoot the enemy but where they can't hurt you, and then taking some more time, but not wasting any ammo can be the better approach (that's also why I said that time alone is not always a good measure), so you can save your ammo for bosses or enemies you cannot outrun or hide for (unless you have the unlimited ammo cheat activated). Still nice comparison between all the weapons ;)

lol if you are good with ammo management you shouldn’t have to use the pistols ever again once you reach the Egypt levels, TR1 is very generous with ammo pickups.

Actually everything shotgun is kind of incorrect for the simple reason that these guns by default shoot with one of its guns only. To have both shooting you need to make only the one face the boss and then face the boss with two.
