Let's take a look at how the Tombow 8900, Mono Professional, and Mono 100 stack up!
I included some pictures with my blog post, and I think they capture the color of the 8900 more accurately, so you can head over and view those and the full written page here: thepurlbug.com/...

IMHO: It’s not so much that American pencils tend to have erasers while Japanese and German don’t. It’s more that really fine art grade pencils don’t typically have erasers because 1. a well finished & painted end on a pencil looks classier, and 2. artists, etc. usually use high grade erasers and use the pencils in locations where good erasers are close by. Pencils with erasers make the assumption that the user setting will be work or school and the user will need one attached. Yadda, yadda, yadda.

That ring on the Mono 100 would bother me too. Thanks for taking the time to talk about it.

The Tombow Mono 100 pencils along with the Blackwing pencils are some of my favorites. But it's really disappointing to see that seven years ago they were produced in Japan and now they are produced in Vietnam. Certainly to reduce production costs.

Great user friendly review! My favorite pencil at the Hospital and home is the Palomino Pearl! I use it all day on my To-Do-List and I can't count how many times people have commented on how great the pencil looks. It's amazing the difference in weight between the Mono100 HB and the pearl. Love Palomino and the Mono is a beautiful pencil but the bar code is sad! Both are similar in darkness and feel.

I just paid 14,30 EUR (16 USD) for a pack of 6 Tombow MONO (including a Tombow percision eraser!) and 2 EUR (2,25 USD) for single Tombow Mono100. Both are really great pencils. Compared to the price of Palomino Blackwings (30 EUR / 34 USD for 12 602, Pearl or Soft) this is quite high price. I'd like to buy some Mitsubishi Hi-Uni but they are very rare in Germany. I recently bought some ultra cheap pencils (made in China, "JPC") for 2 EUR (pack of 12) and was surprised how good they are. Sharpening to a long point without any problem with the wood or lead. They are not beautiful (bright green with black cap - a school pencil) but they are really good (at least the 2B ones I have) and I bought another 5 packs of them (despite my concerns of bying things from China 😒)

You should try Indian pencils (Nataraj, Apsara, DOMS) if you want good quality and value for money.

@@Crazytesseract Oh yes, that's true. There are some really good Indian pencils. Unfortunately, they are not so easy to find here in Germany.

Nice, but it would be much more useful if you spent a lot more time showing the try out and comparing the hardness, blendability, darkness, opacity of the pencils etc instead of saying it in words

Wayne Landry, how cool! I am looking for a softer darker color smooth pencil to write to-do list. I found a General no 2 pencil too light and too hard. I was told Palomino Pearl and Tombow are great and wonder where can I get them more cost effectively in the US. Would appreciate if anyone has any feedback. Any other brand recommendation for writing, not for drawing? Thanks all

The softest, darkest B pencil I have is made by Midori Paper Co. also in Japan. Looks very plain and boring, but when it touches the paper it just glides. And I have Tombow and Blackwing pencils as well, nothing beats the Midori in terms of darkness and smooth ess alone. Only downside is no eraser so the Blackwing still wins if you tend to make a lot of mistakes and use it on the go. Not usually the case with shopping lists where things tend to get crossed off, not erased. Mitsubishi Hi-Uni is around the same quality as the Tombows btw.

@@jacobschouten9980 The existence in this material world is a waste of time. What happens after death? If ultimately, you're going to stop existing forever, then life has no meaning. Don't believe anyone who says "You live only once."

@@Crazytesseract That is quite the pessimistic way of viewing your existence. One's life does not inherently carry meaning; you have to give your own life meaning, which is difficult for many. The list of tragedies is long, but there are still many things to be enjoyed while we are here, and it should not go wasted. There doesn't need to be a life after death in the way many think. Your life carries meaning once you're gone if you've had an effect on the world, and everyone does in some way. Heal the Earth, make those around you happy, and maybe you'll have accomplished something worthy of being here when you're not.
