Tombstone Arizona - The Town Too Tough to Die

As wild west towns go, this one is known nearly worldwide. It's been depicted in Hollywood and looked at as the model for all other ghost towns. The colourful characters, the history that rode through the dusty streets, and the name alone makes Tombstone a worthwhile destination. You may have heard the stories surrounding Wyatt Earp and the Clanton family, but do you know how Tombstone started? And who founded it? Believe it or not, a miner named Ed Schiefflin kept roaming the harsh desert on his own, looking for a big strike. The townsfolk told him that if he kept venturing out, the only thing he would find would be his Tombstone. Well, Ed found a rich silver strike and, as an ode to those who scoffed him, named his little encampment Tombstone. It is still thriving today. Forget what you've seen in the movies as they have over fantasised what these towns were really like. Come along with us and take a quick tour around the streets of the town "too tough to die. "

This was my all time favourite! We traveled every summer to Arizona to be with grandparents. Grandpa was a pretty fast gunslinger himself, was also a sheriff out there. This meant so much to me! Thank you for picking this place and reviving good child hood memories. You two are great. 👍👍

I lived in AZ up until I was 18 and when I was a child I remember the gun fight shows and the candy store, the sweetness literally took my breath away. Visited again in my teens and enjoyed the history and ambience, it was closed at the time and this was after the the second fire I believe. I loved walking on the wooden "sidewalks". We got to see Boothill. Also in regards to Goldfield I knew the family, had classes with the son and his mother was either my teacher or counsel and they owned it for a while. I visited with my family and it was a great trip. Got to visit again 3 years ago and they upgraded it to much to bring in more history. Amazing how much covered. Arizona has so much interesting history, lots of ghost towns, abandoned mines etc. What wonderful coverage you shared.

My older siblings grew up in Tombstone. My oldest sister still lives down there. When I visit my sister during the holidays we get an ice cream cone and sit on a bench watching the tourists for fun. I was born in Douglas which is a border town South of Tombstone.

That's the only place I have a pin in the atlas. Saved my change for a few years before I retired to go there. Never made it an been retired for 6 years now. I watch every video I see about it. Yours is the best. Especially the bird cage. I was thinking of possibly moving there if I could stand the heat. My x boyfriend's sister moved there an was in the reenactment shows until the stage town burned down. She came home for Christmas an gave relatives VHS tapes of her shows. I got my x boyfriend's tape because he's hard to get along with so she stayed at my house and gave it to me instead. She's still there. She has someone drive her out to a mountain an she feeds the deer from her hands. Thank you

Tombstone is one of our favorites. We were really fortunate to be allowed to film in the Birdcage as they have strict no filming policies. Definitely worth a visit.

We live 90 minutes from Tombstone and have visited every year for over 20 years. Normally, it's jam packed with people and it's tough to move on the sidewalks. There's a lot to see there including a mine tour behind the main streets. The Crystal Palace is a great place to eat. We hope to take a trip there this fall.

So I had pause at 26:18 to clarify one thing. Being "shot" is likely inadvertant, such as a stray bullet. "Murder" is taking anothers life for one's gain. The gain could be taking another's property (usually money) or to gain a bit more freedom from a crime witnessed by another. To "kill" is taking another's life in self defense, in defense of a spouse, one's children (in those days children were legal property until age 18 if I a not in error), one can kill in defense of someone who cannot defend him/herself, one can kill for tangible property including livestock, and one can kill another if one fears for other's life and safety. Arizona has statutes that elucidate the above and more, such as threatening to use physical force or deadly. One can "brandish" a weapon. My go to statute to elucidate the above is, "A.R.S. 13-411. It easily found in the internet, but the Arizona Legislature site is the most accurate. Finally, Arizona is a Constitutiona Carry state. That means anyone including visitors to the state who is not legally barred from carrying a weapon such as a felon can carry open or concealed without a license or permit. Check out, A.R.S. 13-411. Oh, please forgive for clarifying more than one thing. I do have more. 😃

Not too bad at all. One minor item - Morgan was shot in the Campbell and Hatch Saloon across the street from Big Nose Kates. The business that is in that building now has a pool table standing 'just about' where the original was. The building was later expanded into what was a back alley. History is fun.....

@@PinInTheAtlas Re "Big Nose Kates" saloon. The left 2/3 was the site of the Grand hotel. It burned. Interestingly enough the ashes are still on the dirt underneath, never cleaned up. The video I'm waiting for is one that gets into the foyer of Schieffelin Hall, and gets a closeup of the chandeliers. Now electric, but it looks like the original kerosene lamps each had two wicks. Unique, or common practice, I don't know. So much to learn, so little time.

Unless you filmed this video prior to July 2021 you totally missed the Arizona Rangers Museum. There is a great amount of history there. As you were going downstairs in the Bird Cage Theater I noticed that a large cloth with graphics is missing. It was the cieling in the theater. Back in the day they covered a cieling with such a cloth. The one from the theater was hung on that wall as you walk downstairs to preserve it. It had seen better days and it was hanging on the wall to make it last longer (fun fact). You totally missed the the gallows on the other side of the court house were prisoners were taken to be hung upon conviction and sentencing. Back in the day the law and justice were carried out forthwith, immediately, now. There was no reduced bail, or catch and release, or coddling of murders and rapists in a special cell, or an insane asylum like the do in commiefornia, nueva york, d.c. chicago, and other places. The law was obeyed or criminals would face consequences for real. But I think I veered a bit here. Allen street used to be a dirt street. Some years ago I visted Tombstone with my sister and Allen street was paved with black top!! I thought, "Who was the ignoranus who ordered such a vile, shameful, detestable horrid thing!! 🤬 I am guessing others voiced their horror and dismay because it is back to being dirt. I think all they did was cover the black top with dirt. Fun fact: The world's largest rose bush is in Tombstone!! One can stand underneath and if memory serves me I think you can picnic there. I failed to see that in the video. Fun fact: The Crystal Palace Saloon still has the original bar when the establishment was rebuilt after the fire!! Google it. Sad fact: (Sad because of population growth and worst are commiefornians coming to commiefornia my Arizona): From the Tombstone Cemetary you can see the "new" Tombstone High School. The old High School building and grounds are still there with the front of the building facing Hwy. 80 and back facing Allen Street. It is across from the Crystal Palace Saloon on 6th Street and "caddy corner" from the Bird Cage Theater. There is also a stage coach repair shop as you continue North on Allen Street and the Tombstone Cemetary across the street from that shop. My mother and oldest brother are buried there. The cemetary is closed now meaning that no one else may be buried there. So I may chose to have my ashes spread over the area from a UH1H if one is still available 60 years from now. Finally, check out the Arizona Rangers history and it's first captain's adventures/life prior to becoming a Ranger. Check out the gun fights of the Arizona Rangers. I have to convey that I did enjoy this video because my family grew up in the area and my oldest sister still lives down there. I now live in the Arizona mountains

This was filmed late 2020. We didn't know about the rose bush! How amazing is that! We did know about the cemetery. Maybe ashes don't count as a burial! There is so much to see in this amazing town. Too much to film and document in a short video. This was a taster to encourage people to visit and support the local establishments. We love Tombstone.

@@PinInTheAtlas As an aside is Bisbee South on 80 where the miners were violently striking and the Arizona Rangers had to step in to squash the mayhem. At a coulpe of miners were killed and many were literally railraoded out in cattle cars. Check it out. I am from Arizona and I have seen everything here. There really is much to see and learn. I really enjoy your videos, thank you.

( bill tattenbaum) .. the story says,, ,About two years after he was hung his mother in Russia contacted the Russian embassy ( in New York I believe ) asking if they could locate him because he had not been heard from in several years,, and Because his last known location was Lordsburg new mexico the embassy contacted law enforcement there. The law enforcement man was a interesting guy named Dangerous Dan Tucker, he told the Russian embassy that Russian bill was dead when asked if he knew what he died from he told them " some kind of neck problem".... Russian bill was friends with the Clayton's but he left Tombstone before the troubles with the Eyrps, him and another person named Sandy I dont recall that person last name were hung side by side inside a bar in Shakespeare new mexico. They were known cattle thief. Sandy was convicted of shooting a bar tender ( he survived) Russian bill was convicted of minor crimes including being " a general nuisance " they were basically lynched.
