There's a ton of functionality built in to the red and green Listen/Mute buttons on the RODECaster Pro II, so this video explains all the different ways you can use them, including how to activate "backchannel communication," which is a great feature if you record with other people.
*This was originally a longer video that also covered mix minus, but Rode released a pretty massive update, so I trimmed off that part and uploaded a new mix minus video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rKXXqKJrd7N4fK8

Just a reminder that this is how mix minus works with Firmware 1.0.3 and things will likely be updated/expanded significantly in the future. In fact, Rode has a great Developer Update video that gives a sneak peak here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h563nYNqj8ljqKc

Really good explanation Tom! Very useful, especially the talkback part (or back channel). Things will get a lot more advanced with the upcoming routing and submixes feature which will exponentially elevate the flexibility of the RCPII, but anyone who does not need it (or would just be submixed up by that 😅) will still be able to route back to this „basic“ functionality and enjoy the capabilities explained clearly here.

But im just wondering, Assuming the buyer has a computer. Why not get a A Scarlet 18i20 that gives you so much more at a better cost? Plus these interfaces offers more upgradability. for instance, you've got 150 bux to play with why not get a mixer from yamaha or behringer? also Protools included or Ableton if you go for the presonus version? I absolutely love the looks of this Rodecaster pro 1 and 2. this device I think its nifty and has a lot of plug and play ability. I'm also looking at the price point for what it offers too though.

Love your videos Tom! With the new routing functionality coming, I hope they expand this so you can control routing out to the speakers. This would allow me to minus myself from the speakers so I could have zoom calls without needing to wear headphones. They have the feature that mutes everything to the speaker when you turn up one of the inputs but as people often talk over each other in these calls, I’m worried I might miss something while everything is muted to the speakers.

Great video! Many thanks for this! I have a suggestion - if i may! What i'd love to see is a video where the RodeCaster Pro II ist used to make a small music production - eg. guitar, voice and lets say some drum loops. Why would i like to see something like that? Cause the only unit i know that could be interesting is the TASCAM L-12, or the Presonus ARC-8 - but for Singer/Songwriter, small bands or setup, the Rode has the perfect size, enough in/outs and even some effects (even i know there are no real "music-procduction-effects") onboard, a really nice display and pretty important 4(!!) Headphone outs. Keep on going with your great content! Cheers, Tom

Hi Tom quick question. I recently bought a scarlett 18i8 so that i could record up to 4 xlr at the same time. Shortly after buying I realized the rodecaster pro would’ve only been a little more expensive, but also can do 4 inputs. Should I return the 18i8 and get the rodecaster pro or keep the 18i8?
@tombuck
@tombuck 2 жыл бұрын
That's a tough one. I would honestly say go for the RCP if you don't need more than 4 inputs, mainly because the preamps are so ridiculously clean and it has so many additional features over the 18i8. But at the same time, I am definitely biased in favor of the RCP, so I totally admit that .

hi tom, great video as usual! Did you notice the audio going to USB Secondary doesn't contain the Master Output processing (either the Compellor or the Output Delay?). It sure would be nice to have an exact duplicate of USB Main going to the second computer. The track effects work, just not the master output processing.

Very helpful as alway Tom. Thank you! Unrelated question… I have the RCP II and FX3 as well. I want to run the RCP II output into the FX3 audio handle. I tried a balanced 1/4” Y cable from the RCP II monitor outs to the FX3 input 1 using the stereo 1/4” side, and I get significant noise. Similar Y cable to the ATEM mini works fine though. Have you tried outputting the RCP II into the FX3 handle by chance? Thanks!

On my unit, when I comment the USB port 1 (main) l my computer and select I as an audio input source, I get a notification on window saying something like 'No mic' . On connecting the secondary usb port to my PC and selecting it as an audio input source, I don't have any issues with recording audio. Is that something expected or am I doing something wrong ? I have noticed that usb port 1 (main) on the rodecaster 2 works flawlessly with the rode central app for changing settings on the rodecaster or for transferring files. It's just that for audio recording it doesn't work. Please let me know your comments.

I select a multitrack recording and my goal is to have my Mic use track 1, and Zoom via my Mac using the USB 1 on the Rodecaster 2. When I select Rodecaster 2 Chat as my audio hardware choice in audition I've got limit channels to pick from. It looks like everything is done over 1 track. When I pick the audio option as my hardware choice for input and output I've got multiple channels to pick from. thnx :-)

I've heard that there are some compatibility issues with Audition that they're working to fix (especially running on Windows). I haven't had any issues myself, but I also don't usually run it through a DAW, so I haven't tried it beyond simple testing. The good news is that it means it's not your fault, the bad news is that we've got to wait for an update (but hopefully that'll be very soon).

Each channel should be functioning independently. Sometimes a mute or solo button can be pressed accidentally and that can cause some strange things to happen, but otherwise it should be pretty straightforward. Tom, I love your channel and I love the Rodecaster Pro 2...that's a lot of love. Anyway, I do a morning radio show here in Philadelphia - Preston and Steve on WMMR - and I have been slowly getting my backup home studio to completely mimic what I can do in our air studio. The Rodecaster Pro 2 has been a quantum leap forward in that effort. I am stuck on one issue, though. I use a Bric Linc 2 unit to get my signal back to the air studio (I use the speaker outs of the Rodecaster into the Bric). I need to do a mix/ minus situation out of the Bric unit into the Rodecaster. I currently have a three-pin connector coming out of the left output channel on the Bric and into track 4. Do you have any suggestion on how I might do a mix/ minus configuration so I can monitor the show in my headphones without that audio feeding back to them? Don't worry if you are at a loss...this is proving a tough one for just about everyone I have consulted :). Thanks for putting out such concise and useful content.

Hey Steve! I think the answer will come in a future firmware update. If you take a look at Rode's video that I pinned as the top comment here, go to about 12:42 and you'll see what the mix minus situation will look like pretty soon. I haven't used Rode Central with an iPad, so I can't offer a ton of help there. Were you using an SD card reader at first? If not, I think that's the most reliable way to transfer the files to your iPad fro upload to Anchor. Anchor's file limit is 250mb. If your file is bigger than that, you could always try putting it into an app like GarageBand and then exporting it as an MP3 or something smaller (Rode Central on the desktop can do this too).

I'm running into a situation where my Windows machine won't get audio from USB 1 but it will get (everything) from Chat. Appears this is extremely common if not entirely widespread going by what Reddit's /r/rode is saying. I'm using ASIO drivers and latest firmware. I think the routing that Rode showed in their Developer Update (June 24) will (hopefully) resolve this when it comes out... but that's a ways off. Hopefully all will resolve quickly. Even with all audio piping into chat, the audio quality is objectively a 100% improvement over my Rodecaster Pro 1.

New sub first time ask’er, so I got the RCP2 and some pod mics to do a comedy podcast, but getting a lot of handling noise like touching or moving the mic. I know the obvious answer is don’t touch the mic but these are comics and they’re very animated. I have seen podcasts where they use the Podmic and they move it around like crazy and are always touching or even resting there face on it and it doesn’t make much noise at all if any. I have them on Rode boom arms gain at 55…any recommendations besides don’t touch the mic lol, oh noise gate helps but I hear you’re not suppose to use that very much, thanks!
@tombuck
@tombuck 2 жыл бұрын
Hmm, this is always a bit tricky. Handling noise shouldn't be too bad when using the mic arms, but I can totally imagine comics being super animated. Unfortunately I can't think of a foolproof way to stop it behind training them not to touch the mics. If it's a huge issue, adding one or more SM7B's might be the way to go because, even though they're its significantly more expensive, it's very resistant to handling noise.

Hi Tom! New subscriber, love your channel, thanks very much! Really liking my new RCP2 but I'm having 3 connection issues. 1. It works fine, but after restarting my M1 Max Mac Studio the RCP2 disconnects (it's no longer visible as a Sound Output or Input selection). When I unplug/replug the USB1 cable, it works fine again. I experience the same problem on my M1 MBA. 2. My Bose Companion 5 output speakers now stop working at random times and I have to unplug/replug them too. 3. I can connect to WiFi just fine but I never get an IP address if I select "switch to wired." I tried "erasing all content and settings" and doing a fresh install on my Mac but these problems persist. Just wondering if it's just me or are others experiencing the same problem? If the latter, I hear Firmware v1.05 will address the USB connection so maybe this will be fixed then? @@tombuck Hi Tom, you're right -- the Rode tech support team was awesome. We've been troubleshooting by frequent email over the last few days and determined it's a problem with the Mac Studio reconnecting with certain USB audio devices to the main ports (both A and C) directly on the computer. But when I connect both the RCP2 and my Bose speakers to an OWC Mini-Stack STX hub, it solves the problem: both devices are reconnected after restarting and no longer drop off. Next I'll give Apple tech support another call, elevate the issue to an engineer and try to learn if it's a common problem or just a weird defect on my Mac.
