Try to think one step ahead: like, what is the most obvious (genuine) reaction to those words? Like "it's not you, it's me" => feeling better, because you're not the problem. "My relationship with X is complicated" => it would take a long time to explain, probably boring, let's talk about something more interesting instead. Then consider that the person saying those words might say them to get that result, not to actually give you information - so in the first case, they might want you to feel better for whatever reason (often because they feel bad about it and don't want to cause you even more misery, because they either still care a bit or just aren't a monster - even if they consider you the problem), and in the second one, they might want to discourage you from asking about that relationship (because probably they don't want to talk about it, probably because it makes them feel bad). Lots of examples in the song are more jokes, though. The "g'dday, champion" and friends is something you could hear standing alone against a group of tipsy and energized football fans at night on an empty street, so it sounds dangerous just because of the context. "I literally can't" is an internet joke, it's just a phrase people use ("literally" started meaning "really" or "very" instead of literally "literally"), and the hyperbole is that she can (handle the situation? stop laughing? it's context-dependent), but it's harder, and she wants to say it's hard, so she's using a hyperbole "I can't", emphasizing it even more with "literally". Sexual jokes are kind of next level because people can get very creative about it, but it very depends who's talking, too - so some people would joke about sex all the time and some people wouldn't at all. Oh, and reading between the lines of the song instead of "what is said", you can get the conclusion that the author actually often dislikes the need of understanding and conversing in subtext. Like, it's convenient, it can protect your emotions, it's funny (or scary-funny), but it can also be annoying and often cowardly.

"It's not what's said, what's implied? Read between- between the lines" might be the hardest-going chorus I have ever heard in my life. 0:58 Tom I gotta say that harmonic melody here is fantastic, especially since I can still clearly understand the lyrics. The choice to split the vocals into each ear keeps it intelligible while also giving the song more depth. It's not something I usually think is pulled off well, but man you did it wonderfully here, well done.

After these few years I still think this is the best work he's done, overall. I don't think it's his FUNNIEST song, but as far as structure, comedic delivery, editing, and the song itself just being a fuckin' banger, I think it's his best performance.

Hey Tom, do you record yourself playing the whole song a large number of times with each mic position/instrument and then just edit them together? Because that is a lot of work. Even if you just record short clips and cut them together that is still a mammoth effort on top of writing the song.
@wobblysauce3 жыл бұрын
That is very similar to video clips, do the song a hundred ways in a day and cut and chop it down to 3 mins.

Music producer here. What he's doing is recording and producing the whole song in the studio, and then taking video of him playing certain instruments without any audio. It's mostly lip sync, but there may be some spoken word parts where he used the performance audio

as someone who is autistic, this scares me because i dont know when it descends into joking territory or if it even does at all. that one about the parties makes me think it goes from comedy to seriousness but i genuinely cant tell since between... - said yes, and also said everybody there was strangers to him - said yes, but only thought to himself that everybody there was strangers to him ...the 2nd option is most likely and therefore the party host had literally nothing to go off of except that he said yes on 2 separate occasions. how the heck am i supposed to read between the lines when the top line says yes and the bottom line says yes and its surrounded by yes and there is no sign of no anywhere?

The genius part about this song is that, when taking it literally, it is a text telling you that you must catch and receive social cues, while when reading between the lines it is making fun of a society that has decided such is the best method of communication. In other words, however you read it, the conclusion contradicts with the method you used to get there. So can that be reduced to a single interpretation? Probably "communication is hard".
