Here is a video collection of some strange cars that I have seen over the years at the drag strip. I'm not making fun of any of these vehicles because I respect anyone that puts in the time to get a vehicle out to the track and race it. But sometimes you ask yourself "what were they thinking"? And of course the answer doesn't matter because obviously that is what the person is into and it is much better to have a variety of vehicles showing up at the track rather than everything the same.
Point in example is the first car that is the Gasser Pontiac Fiero, the owner of this car wanted to pass on his knowledge of fabrication onto his Grandkids and found a cheap platform of a vehicle to start hacking into. And once he was done it might not have been the fastest car at the track but for sure it was the most talked about vehicle there, and nobody would question that once this guy touched that Fiero he obviously made it better. Because I can guarantee you that if a regular Fiero pulled up to the line nobody would give it a second look at all.
Happy New Year! I invite you to check out my New Merch Page - www.tomeighty.com

The red dragster at 22:05-23:05 is a Chassis Research Company dragster designed and built by Scotty Fenn, the first production drag race car available to the market in the early 60's. His pointed frame with lever shocks was a trademark of his original design that was very successful for many years. Cool to see such a neat old race car!

As a Dutch car fan, this makes me very jealous, building your own drag car and drive from track to track in a organised event. This is impossible in Europe. Here your car needs to checked out by the authorities to get a licence plate... So i love looking at these vids and those from 1320video, Cleetus McFarland and Steve Morris and a lot more...

There are certain states within the USA that also check your car (e.g. Illinois), but I am not certain how detailed the inspection is.

It's mixed here in the US. Some places do require annual inspections. Some don't. To be fair, drag racing is really the most grassroots Motorsport we have access to well, the only one that doesn't require a dedicated vehicle. I mean you can do like dirt bikes, four wheelers circle track but that's about it. Do you guys have like grassroots rally racing? If so, I'm jealous of that

These car's aren't driven to the tracks we don't want the mileage put on the engine their towed or on a trailer but you are right many can be licensed for the street but the engine's are detuned and a battery and starter added.

I've seen all these cars "back in the day". I saw a Studebaker Metro a few days ago w/a small block Chevy in it, and a nice paint job. I was at Lions Drag Strip 1969, in the lineup. Big Willie of the LA STEET RACERS pulled up behind me in his Dodge Super Bird w/the Hugh rear wing. BIG WILLIE was huge!

1:37 - Nothing strange about that car. It was built to the "Competition Coupe" rules in the early '60s. Not what the rules-makers intended, but what the rules-readers could easily see. In the mid-west we had NHRA tracks, so no "fuel" at the time, but good fun.

The Cackle Cars starting at 20:38... I can assure you the drive shafts are not removed. Those cars don't have a drive shaft, just a splined couple that mates the transmission to the differential. Not quite sure how they would be able to disable them, but they are being towed likely because there is no cooling system on those cars. As for disabling, maybe they remove one of the mating pieces of the coupler. Cool Vid :)

@43:23 thru 46:49,, re the Merc Cyclone GT,, My eldest daughter was born in 1970,, making her 2 years older than Tom BUT those Merc's (in spite of the production numbers shared) were rare as hell to see on the road ion those days and even more rare to see now days. A friend of mine had a 1972 Cyclone GT with the 429 in it. It was true to form for Mercury in those days with an interior as nice as a Cadillac but performance and economy was not it's strong suit.

The Montego's were scarce back then even before your birth. The Ford dynasty's advertising department must have been starring at the sun on the Merc's. I am in the group (a very small group) 4dr HT, 2dr HT and a Wagon and I wonder the production count would be on a wagon with the 250 IL6 and 3 on the tree and if you're lucky PB, PS and a radio. I like all that moves and the weirder the better.

The red truck\van model was doing a reverse wheelie once he brought it back down. Very unstable.
@tomeighty
@tomeighty Ай бұрын
Yes that Old School VW Bus doing the Wheelie was way out of control, and those old vehicles that did Wheelies back then did not have a rear suspension at all to them. The sidewalls of the tires were the suspension, so if there was any bouncing around that would take care of it. And in the case of a huge bounce it would actually get the tires off of the ground. Dragsters actually have same rear suspension set up in them, that's partially why they have such tall tires.

Yeah, as an official old fart, I grew up with these cars. Fremont Drag Strip was 20 minutes away from home. We had an AMC Ambassador Station Wagon with a 390 CID. It would tow our trailer during the day and burn rubber at night. My first car was an AMC AMX 390 4 speed. I had that for 40 years. I will be dead in the next 15 years so you go out and keep finding these rare gems. Todays cars are cool. But speed by Tech is not the same. There was an old saying that there was no replacement for Cubic Inch Displacement except Cubic Bucks... I guess that's still true today. God bless and Jesus is still Lord of Lords and King of King. Old school rail cars with a body or a half of a body slapped on em aren't really that strange. EDIT: the more you watch the more you realize this is actually just a whole video of pretty ridiculously normal vehicles. The odd actually strange unit however nothing that stands out aside the bar table...but then again that's been done 5000000000x now also. More proof youtube is just becoming the same ol same old re filmed and re done crap with a new clickbait title slapped on it. Huge L. But then that's probly why youtube in a whole is dying off fast.

Best car I've ever owned was a 1966 GTO that had a 428 H.O. massaged with a 4 speed & 410:1 posi 12 bolt rear. No power accessories & at 60m.p.h. I got 19-21 m.p.g. depending on what brand of 100 octane was in the tank. Mostly AVGAS all the time. Pays to have friends at the airport. I really miss those cars. Had the big Chryslers & Mercs & a few Coupe DeVilles. I wish I had them all back. The big 2 door coupes were the most comfortable & the Chryslers handled damn good for a 22 foot boat.
