This video brings me back to 1994 when I was just solo... The Ka8 is really a great plane. It felt like you strapped it on your back like a backpack, instead of flying in it. Great video, I'm reliving those moments.

K8 starts always go too fast. I always sang "Rocket man" when launched. Then signal to the wich driver. Sometimes 4 times till they got it right. On time, when there was a lot of wind, i reached 900 m of height with 1.100 m of cable. I flew backwards with negative ground speed. Zig-zagged a couple of times and then landed the thing straight in. I'll never forget that flight.

Hi , i'm an Air Traffic Controller and aspiring musician from Ireland. I've just completed an instrumental electronic piece of soundtrack, the theme of which is unpowered/Hot Air flight. Would it be possible to use a few seconds of footage from your awesome video on an accompanying video that i would be using as background during live performances and maybe as part of a compilation on a youtube video? Naturally, full credit would be given to your work and if there are any sections you wouldn't want used, i'd fully understand. Thanks for your time , Michael.

@michaelderflinger5002
@michaelderflinger5002 4 жыл бұрын

@@TheAustrianSandman1 I flew at some airport in Austria just after leaving Germany and I wonder if it was this field. We took off with a 100G winch (or so it seemed), got a bit of height, then instantly flew to a mountain side and joined about 20 other gliders doing laps while gaining height (I think it was a Ka-13). That winch tow was the most powerful winch I've ever been on...and the thrill of flying slope was amazing! I've flown often RC (Radio Controlled Gliders) on slope, but only this one time in a real glider next to a real mountain. That was one amazing day! I soloed in Germany (Ka-13). I miss flying----but, check it out, with a couple of weeks I'm buying an N3 Pup. It's been too long since I've flown on a regular basis. Keep posting videos!

How did you take off so fast ? Don’t you have used another plane ?
@michaelderflinger5002
@michaelderflinger5002 4 жыл бұрын
A winch. This is a truck which is parked on the far side of the airfield. It has an additional ~300hp engine which drives a cable drum. The cables are ~1km long, depends on the airfield size. In this case he got to 1400ft above the airfield. Since gliders are very light these strong engines accelerate them to 60mph within 1-2 seconds.

I regularly fly to INN with the 737, but I have never seen a winch start there, I didn't know you guys do that at INN. Why takeoff 26 and landing 08? You can probably stay at Martins Wand a bit longer that way, but when more planes fly around it might lead to dangerous situations.

I fly the 737 for Transavia. We mainly fly to INN in winter, then the gliders probably are less active. I have also flown gliders for 15 years (many flights in a Ka-8), but that was a while back. Unfortunately I've never flown gliders in the Alps, must be an amazing experience!

Exactly, closed fist, knuckles touching the release mechanism. That's what we do out here in Nevada, in the USA where turbulence on tow is often extreme, very extreme. But then again with climbs @ 4 to 6 ms to 5000m is common. Mountain and remote areas everywhere. Never any grass landing places to be found out here in the "Wild West" as we say. Beautiful scenery where you are. I often in Innsbruck in the summer. How could I fly with your club? Possible?
@NobleWizard
@NobleWizard 6 жыл бұрын
@@berndkorthaus5082 I don't know how you do things in your country but that would be the case for an aerotow. For winch launching your hand needs to be on the release with a loose grip. When it goes wrong on the winch it happens very quickly and has been proven to be fatal near the ground.

High speed & low pass glider compilation.
