Brilliant. I do remember on a Corgi inspection in the late 80s being asked to input test a boiler by my inspector. When doing the calculation my inspector informed me I should be able to do this in my head. I was a little embarrassed and looked painfully at the inspector who said" 3600 x the calorific value of the gas equals" and whilst doing this reached into his jacket pocket and took out his calculator, looked at me and said " gotcha". Real people doing what we do

Great videos, every one of them. As a trainee would like to say - Thanks a lot for your time and effort Sir! Just a little question though - at 12:38 you have noted 2.58x38.7 = 100.0 MJ per cubic meter, I believe you meant 100.00 MJ per hour at this rate - 2,58 cubic meters per hour, am I right? As the calorific value is already given - 38.7 MJ per cubic meter? And the numbers always differ slightly between different centres and books. Which, unfortunately is a bit confusing! I have been thought that the calorific value is 38.6, which changes slightly the calculations!... Anyways, also would like to say thanks for your time reading this comment in advance. Regards.

Reg 26.9 is pretty damn important if you cover as many aspects of it as you can you'll sleep easy. As an engineer it's in your court to make sure the appliance is operating safely and within manufacturers given tolerances. Gas rating only takes a few moments and the outcome can show you if the appliance is under/over gassed. It really isn't that difficult to calculate. I've noticed many engineers using the apps it maybe a little quicker. However come the time of your re-assement you'll struggle. Seems to be the case for ventilation requirements and pipe sizing too. Don't get stuck in your lazy ways people 😜

Derick could you explain to an interested not gas registered person ..... Why do you equate 3.6 MJ in 1Kw !!! I fully understand a cu mtr of gas contains this amount of energy ( 38,760,000) joules . A watt is a rate of work not joules , a Kwatt X hour is the amount of energy ( 1j = 1watt X 1 second ) therefore I understand that 1cu mtr of gas equates to 38,760,000 watt X seconds , or 38,760 Kwatt X seconds there must be a time component somewhere...please what am I missing
@tomkatgastraining4 жыл бұрын
When we gas rate we have to follow a standard. The appliance manufacturers and gas engineers have to follow the same standards. We gas rate for 2 minutes to give us a m3 figure for 2 minutes so we x that by 30 to give us m3/hr but we need kw so we x by the Cv of gas which is an average of the country and a gross figure of 38.76 but we just use 38.7 we then divide this figure by 3.6 because again this is an average and a standard of 3.6 mega joules in a kw and then finally because it’s gross and we need net we decide by 1.11 for Nat gas.

Excellent video yet again. When servicing an appliance I’m assuming, Operating pressure must be checked along with gas rating the appliance every time as the burner pressure can be fine but the appliance could be burning the wrong amount of gas due to for example a faulty/blocked or wrongly sized injector. Those smart meters seem a bit of a pain. Roll on next Wednesday. Please keep up the great work!

Minor error. Calorific value in megajoules is a unit of energy. A kilowatt is a unit of power. A kilowatt-hour is a unit of energy. Therefore the line on your board should read "MJ = 3.6MJ in 1 KWh" ie a Kilowatt-hour equals 3.6 megajoules. Also technically you should quote the calorific value is at the nominal domestic appliance pressure of 22 millibars.
