This bust up between Keane and McCarthy was in the post for a long time, the Saipan incident was just the spark that blew the whole house down. The problem was Keane was bigger than Mick, bigger than Ireland even, and Mick knew it. While Keane was fully justified in complaining about the facilities, Mick's ego couldn't take that Roy was having a go at him again, regardless of whether he was right or wrong. Then all the gripes from the past get dredged up to justify each parties views, then there is no backing down, only carnage. Its all about man management and having the self awareness to take some critcism and blow back from players, to harness that to get even greater performances out of them. Iam sure it wasnt all a bed of roses between Fergie and Roy down the years, but Fergie knew how to manage those big personalities so long as they were doing it on the pitch. As soon as Roy's powers began to fade and the injuries crept in, bang he was out the door. We all wish Roy could have buttoned it until we got to the actual training camp a few days later, but he got to that place in his career but never accepting second best and he wasnt going to start now.

I can understand both sides. The interviewer is trying his best to get Roy to bury the hatchet and compromise so he would make an appology that the coach and the FA would surely accept. But there was too much bad blood at this point that Roy was not willing to be scapegoated for the FA's incompetence and mismanagement. His criticism of the training facilities was justified, and unless the FA and coach agreed with him on that and vowed to do better, he was not going to back down on that.

He was right to be angry about the facilities and poor preparation but wrong to throw McCarthy and his teammates under the bus BEFORE the tournament. In the Irish Times interview he basically tore everyone to shreds before a ball had even been kicked. He had no right to do that,, just because was captain and playing for United. Put his ego before what was best for the side. And McCarthy was right about Iran game, Keane played for United three full games in the 8 days after that playoff, he clearly wasn't injured. Just couldn't be arsed.

It was really poor prep. Mind you given the refs in that World cup ROI weren't beating South Korea even if they'd got past Spain... Keane no doubt thought Mick was a joke manager compared to Fergie at that time but then again he has probably a lower opinion of SAF as a man given the fallout from his Man. United exit than McCarthy who at least came to see him before they met again as managers before Wolves-Sunderland in 2006. Was reading Keane's autobiography a few years back and he actually mentioned taking Ipswich to an RAF base to prepare for pre season training in summer 2010. Said he got up in the morning and some of the players were giving him a look of "how the f*** are we getting promoted at places like this!" He lasted about 15 games that season... Great great player no doubt but an enigma as an individual.

I bet roy watching that game knew he should of been there. He really let down the fans, and irish team, who could of done with there best player at that moment, as that game in 2002 against spain ireland should of won, and spain were there for the taking, but they missed the influence on the pitch of keane. I bet roy where ever he was that day when ireland played spain, and they lost on penalties knows he should of been there, and i bet his mates and family believe that too. Its amazing its 20 years ago now, but i bet that missing that game really haunts roy keane, as it ended his aura for irish fans as that player would would do anything for the team. Spain were there that day for ireland to beat, and they missed keane ability to control the center of the park. Spain were very weak team then, and ireland should of won, they lost on penalities. Keane cannot blame irish people for thinking he let them down. Spain could of been beaten if ireland had that player like roy keane on the pitch, and you can be sure keane knows that himself. Of course its his life, and he does what he wants, but you can be sure watching that game in 2002, he was kicking himself for not being there in that game against spain that ireland were beaten on penalties.

Roy has proven over the years that he has a horrible streak. With the things he's said about people and their personal lives that he has no right to comment on. So no, I don't take his side. And yes, Mick was right to send him home in this instance.

How the hell did not 1 player stand up and say, here, you pair sort it out !!! Know why,I won’t reveal a source that went to say something and was told to shut up or you’ll be out too ! Clue,it was an Irish player, and I’m Irish…

Mick should have been the one to be sent home.

@@Tricky181 Ah in ways, they were as right as each other ! Should’ve been more clear,it was someone who worked for Niall Quinn who told me that, only needed a voice to say, leave them to it,we’re on both sides ! We’re here for Ireland !

Roy was right to leave but what I would say is if he considers himself a Christian he should give and expect nothing in return. Expect to be treated poorly and betrayed and persecuted, and forgive because they know not what they do.

A man who lost his temper speaking as if he was Muhammad Ali. 😂

Roy: Mick, ye're a shite manager. De only manager oi respect is Sor Alex Ferguson! *a few years later* Roy: Ferguson is a langer!

The Ferguson quote doesn't sound like something he'd say. I think you are a liar.

Keane was totally right to be angry about the poor preparation and facilities for a world cup, but why the two of them couldn’t speak privately so no one felt slighted I do not know. Ireland couldn’t afford to be without its leader and arguably best player. As the manager it was McCarthy’s responsibility to ensure everything needed was provided. The buck ultimately stopped with him.
