@Ejrk22 Olympics are usually crapshoots where you often need luck to win. Irish sportspeople for the most part give it their very best and at that level of course they will aim to succeed. I was 15 that summer and will never forget the collective sadness of Irish people that our best player ever didn’t play. My generation missed the excitement of the excellent results of the Irish team in the 80s and early 90s, where we perform out of our socks and punched well above our weight (in terms of population size). This video tells me that Roy regrets not gritting his teeth, as he did on the pitch, and giving the thing a rattle. No amount of interviews or books or rants will get us the 02 World Cup back. So this is a good example of why you should avoid storming off in a high pressure situation... which takes a significant measure of self-control and humility. Sometimes, even if you are right, your response to a situation can be wrong. But good luck Roy and all those athletes from our small island who represent us with pride! From a sad 15 year old Dubliner, doing his Junior Certificate!

From what I’ve seen of this interview, Roy Keane seems vindicated on the two main issues. Even though it’s obvious that Gary Neville (understandably) doesn’t want to take sides against Alex Ferguson, he clearly implies that Ferguson had been insidiously undermining Keane for some time in order to get rid of him. Hence, the MUTV matter was just a subterfuge used by Ferguson for this purpose. Regarding the Saipan matter, Keane was vindicated by the subsequent John Delaney scandal which highlighted how rotten the whole FAI set up was. Keane wasn’t interested in the “go along to get along” approach which most people adopt in these situations, and which it appears the other Irish players adopted in Saipan.
@stephengallagher22098 ай бұрын
That wasn't the issue at all. Keane was only right about the bad conditions. He was not right to slate the whole set-up in the press... he could have done that privately... then, he was apoakled whenvhe was called out for having faked an injury to avoid the decisive pkayoff in front of the team. Roy wanted to win at all costs, a mentality that made Man U such a force to be reckoned with in the 90s and 00s. I also think he knew that he was head and shoulders above the rest of the Irish squad as he WAS a good player and had the medals to prove it and I think he's politely alluding to the majority of the rest of the squad being otherwise quite ordinary and maybe not having his same level of passion or talent (hence the dig at Kenny Cunningham). And whilst I think McCarthy made a serious error of judgement to single out Roy in that way and call into question his commitment, there was obviously a longstanding problem between them that eventually boiled over. Having said that, McCarthy's record as a club and international manager is actually pretty decent whilst Roy's is woeful because of their differing approaches.

Keane helped bring the best out of Beckham, Giggs, Neville and Scholes by leading by example. They would walk through fire for him. No reason why he couldn't have brought that out of the Duff, the other Keane, Harte and Finnan who were established players in their own right and played against that Man U side many times over the years. They knew what Keane brought to the table and knew it was exactly what they needed. McCarthy brought this on himself by being lackadaisical about the appalling facilities and just accepting mediocrity given the fact that he didn't have what it took as a player. If that had been Jack Charlton or Ferguson, you can guarantee they wouldn't have stood for such pathetic standards. McCarthy has an inferiority complex which is why he was never an eighth the player that Keane was

Ok, facts: Roy told Mick after the game on the Saturday that he'd fly to Tehran for the decisive fixture. On Sunday, Ferguson phoned Keane, and told him 2-0 was enough. He had asked for no physio at that point, but declared his knee crocked. Two days after he played a full match against Leicester. Then, mid-week, he played a full game against Bayern. Then, that weekend, he played a full match against Arsenal. Ferguson was famous for pulling his players out of international duties with fake injuries. Keane played 270 minutes, plus about 30 of added time in a week on his 'injured knee', after the team fought it out in Tehran. His indignance at the suggestion only confirms his dishonesty. And finally, though right about the poor conditions, he gave two inflammatory interviews slating the whole set-up, which led to McCarthy to have a go at him in front of the team. Did Keane do it publicly? Yes. So why would he demand privacy for criticism of himself?

Wrong wrong and wrong again. Keane's playing record speaks for itself, Man U cleaned up under him for 6 years. He helped bring the best out Beckham, Giggs, Neville, Scholes etc. He knew how good they were and he knew how good Robbie Keane, Ian Harte, Steve Finnan and Damian Duff could be as well since he'd squared off against them many times in the league, They likewise experienced first hand the wrath of that Man U side and having the captain of that wrecking ball of team leading them in Korea was going to light a fire in them...Keane wasn't going to compromise with a manager/former 3rd rate player who settled for less than leaving it all on the pitch...all of that preparation that led Man U to success started away from the pitch. McCarthy accepting rubbish like training pitches with barbed wire sticking out, feckless layabouts like John Delaney and co. living it up in first-class while the team sit in economy eating cheese sandwiches when they need proper food to train.....a testament to why he was always stations below Keane and the rest of that squad.....corrosive mindset and it's why Ireland is now being managed by someone who makes McCarthy look like Alf Ramsey....a 4-cap League of Ireland reject

I recognise many traits about RK that I myself have personality wise.
