Tommy Collins with Country Life - New Patches

In the summer of 1989, the finnish band Country Life were honoured to back up well-known country songwriter, singer and entertainer Tommy Collins on a tour of Sweden & Finland. Tommy Collins has written many hits songs for artists such as Merle Haggard, Faron Young, George Strait and many others. www.cmt.com/art... In 1999, Tommy was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters´ Hall of Fame, something that he was very proud of. Tommy Collins died at his home in Ashland City, TN on March 14, 2000.
Just by coincidence, well-known musician, James Pennebaker happened to be in Finland on business during this period and he agreed to play fiddle at this concert. James has played with Lee Roy Parnell, Big & Rich, Pam Tillis, etc.etc...He recently toured with John Fogerty, playing steelguitar.

Sadly I only learned about Tommy recently, but he has altered my heart and mind regarding country music, Briefly, this man was and is great!

My parents owned a night club in California back in the early 70's. They hired a lot of Bakersfield muscians to play there. Tommy came in a few times. He was a very nice guy. He would just sit at the bar and listen. Very few people knew who he was, and he didn't flaunt it. I'm glad I got to meet him. I was just 17 and into Alice Cooper and the Stones!

Tommy Collins was a hall of fame songwriter. I am sure most country music fans have heard the Merle Haggard song "Leonard" which Merle wrote as a tribute to Tommy Collins.

In the early ‘80’s I played guitar backing up Tommy at The Oklahoma Opry in Oklahoma City. He was the Real Deal, and fun to pick with.

Was that the Haggar Twins from Hee-Haw? What the hell?! Did they escape? If you want to know that God had a sense of humor, just look at the Haggar twins! Merle Haggard. I met Tommy Collins back in 73 in Frazier Park, California. What a nice, humble man he was. If you want to know his story, Merle Haggard wrote a song for him called Leonard: When Leonard finally came to California He was twenty-one years old, as I recall He loved to write a song and pick on the guitar And he came to hang a gold one on the wall The town in which he lived is not important But you'll know which town I mean by the time I'm through He soon became a famous entertainer But Leonard was a name he never used He was on his way to having what he wanted Just about as close as one could be Hey, once he even followed Elvis Presley And he wrote a lot of country songs for me But he laid it all aside to follow Jesus For years he chose to let his music go But preaching wasn't really meant for Leonard But how in the hell was Leonard s'posed to know Well, life began to twist it's way around him And I wondered how he carried such a load He came back again to try his luck in music And lost his wife and family on the road After that he seemed to bog down even deeper And I saw what booze and pills could really do And I wondered if I'd ever see him sober But I forgot about a friend that Leonard knew Well, Leonard gave me lots of inspiration He helped teach me how to write a country song And he even brought around a bag of groceries Hey, back before Muskogee came along Really, I'm not trying to hide his show name Or the town in which this episode began Somehow I had to write a song for old Tommy If just to see the smilin' faces in the band
