Mandy Mandy! Funny story abouyt Diana Dors - Her real name is Diana Fluck. Fluck. She's from Swindon in England, but went to Hollywood and became a big star. When the people of her hometown heard she was coming home, they decided to roll out the red carpet and make a big deal out of it. The local mayor or someone, I forget exactly who, memorised a little speech for the occasion. when it came to the big moment he said words to the effect of "Ladies and gentlemen, the world knows her as Diana Dors, but of course, to us, she will always be Diana Clunt". I think we can all see what went wrong in his mental process there. 😅

Yeah, Cooper is a professionally trained magician, he messes up tricks on purpose for the sake of comedy. It also catches people off guard when he does the magic tricks correctly

He had a certain elegance to him. We'd enjoy all of his silly jokes and tricks and him laughing at himself all the time, and my mom couldn't see the humour in it.

The jokes - if anyone else did them not many would laugh, but Tommy had that gift of making them funny. He was a naturally funny man. God bless. It's true, we would be laughing as soon as he walked on - all the family!

Tommy was a national treasure. I remember learning about his death on News At Ten. I was 15 at the time, it was like hearing a family member had died. It was on every newspaper's front page the next day. The whole nation loved him. He was also a top magician, but the joke was, the trick would always look like it was going wrong, then he would pull off something totally unexpected.

There is a story that Tommy, when he was young - was asked by his boss if he could put on a Christmas show of his magic tricks for the workers . The show was a disaster - he kept getting it wrong, breaking things, losing things and so on, so much so, that the workers were laughing their pants off; Tommy left the stage in tears - shellshocked. Half an hour later - they were still laughing their pants off and Tommy thought to himself "Wait a minute - there's something in this !"

Lol, his big mouth joke reminded me of a joke my mum used to tell me as a very young child and always had me in hysterics, The Wide Mouthed Frog. It doesn't work so well in text. A wide mouth frog is hopping through the swamp, when he comes upon a dragonfly. He says "HELLO! WHO ARE YOU,WHAT DO YOU EAT"? The Dragonfy replies "I'm a dragonfly,I eat little bugs and stuff." To which he says "I'M A WIDE MOUTH FROG,I EAT FLIES," The wide mouth frog continues along until he comes upon a squirrel. He says "HELLO! WHO ARE YOU,WHAT DO YOU EAT"? The Squirrel replies "I'm a squirrel, I eat nuts and seeds." Wide mouth frog again says "I'M A WIDE MOUTH FROG,AND I EAT FLIES" The wide mouth frog continues hopping along and finds an alligator basking on the edge of the swamp. He says "HELLO! WHO ARE YOU,WHAT DO YOU EAT"? The alligator turns and shows his teeth and says "I'm an alligator and I eat wide mouth frogs." To which the frog replies with pursed lips 'ᴼʰ, ʸᵒᵘ ᵈᵒⁿ'ᵗ ˢᵉᵉ ᵐᵃⁿʸ ᵒᶠ ᵗʰᵒˢᵉ ᵃʳᵒᵘⁿᵈ ᵈᵒ ʸᵒᵘ'ˀ🤣🤣🤣

He essentially had a different guest(s) on his show each week. Some would get involved in the magic tricks and jokes part of the show, like here. And others would go on to do a few skits with him in the show too. "Tommy Cooper - Magic book - 1970" for example, will have a guest you defintly know

I used to like his shows, nearly all his tricks "failed" in a funny way. Every now and then he would do a trick that worked, and he used to look so surprised! :🙂 Two women I used to know went to one of his shows, they had to leave, they were in so much pain because their sides were hurting with laughter. All he had done was walk on stage and look at them. 🙂

Diana Dors. Not a singer bless her but a film starlet of the late '50s. A sort of English Marilyn Monroe or perhaps Jayne Mansfield might be a closer comparison. She worked on tv and in films right through to her passing in 1984. You should quickly google 'Diana Dors 1955'. She was a really glamorous looking woman and very luminous on screen. Thanks again for the good viewing. You never fail to make my day jollier.

Mr Cooper reminds me of old school vaudeville. I saw a low budget Las Vegas show that was similar, a marginal magician, a music act, and semi nude dancers. It was entertaining, but seemed like a high school production. The joke about small mouth being an indication of intelligence, is a short version of the joke about a large mouth bass fish meeting a frog. They meet, and the large mouthed bass asks the frog “I’m a bass and I eat a variety of things, what do you eat?” The frog says “ large mouthed bass”. The bass shrinks his mouth and says “that’s interesting and swims away”. And of course the comedian exaggerates the size of their mouth size while telling the joke.

Another older fake magic act was The Great Flydini. This was something that Steve Martin would sometimes do at exclusive Hollywood parties. Johnny Carson had him do it on the Tontght Show before he retired (5/6/92) (still the best version I think)

According to legend, in one of Tommy's early shows a trick went wrong and he ad-libbed by telling jokes. It worked so well that he kept it as part of his act. If you're willing to try some older comedians, have you watched any Morecambe and Wise? They were for many years Britain's most loved comedians. Their sketch with noted orchestral conductor Andre Previn is an all-time classic... The play you described sounds like one of Dennis Potter's plays, "The Singing Detective" - it was made into a great (but weird) TV series and also a movie.

Did you know that this comedy legend was a favourite in Las Vegas and they kept asking him back to do a few years at a time Tommy Cooper who had a big drink problem and always wanted to be paid in cash in Britain if you were a club owners you paid what he said back in the 1950's,1960's,1970's and 1980's because he would fill the clubs night after night and he allegedly had to have free drinks for him and he's staff and friends. Who I think made his name in America on the Ed Sullivan show or someone else, just as famous on American TV at the time. Like wise, the same with another British legend Des 0 Connor who toured with Buddy Holly in 1957/8 ish had two long TV seasons on American TV during either late 1960's and early 1970's cannot remember when, but had the problem of gambling allegedly mainly because of being paid a lot of money back then. When he came back to England he was offered comedy talk shows and comedy gigs when he invited little known American comedians when he would go to comedy clubs across America to find young comedians for he's show and I mean the biggest names in American comedy now and they have had their own talk shows and hosted them for years in American part of TV history these names about four of these guys, starting with letterman, Gerry Seinfeld, just two out of many all you have to do is look up these guys big breaks owed to our Des as he was known. I think he got his TV break in the 1953 to 5 ish on British TV Love mum
