What makes this difficult to sound like him (besides his long fingers) is the fact that he's a drummer and his rhythm is impeccable, and he's really not hitting things right on the beat, but lays it in a groove that just comes from inside him, which is so Tommy. The other thing is we are all trying to play the guitar... he plays the song. It just happens to come out on a guitar. Big difference. THAT'S why he's best-in-class.

Love comments like these that leave us further baffled than we were before. Music is full of people who talk tosh in the hope that others will think they know what they're talking about. . E.g. "Lays it in a groove". 'just comes from inside him", "so Tommy", etc. etc. etc. What planet are these people on? And can I go there one day? I love music, play guitar, play brass in concert bands, have played in orchestras too, taught music, blah blah. What I would say is just listen, enjoy, clap then shut up.

For anyone trying to learn this song, get a tab online and use it as a reference and watch the video as you learn it. Don't use the tab as the ground truth because it isn't. You're going to have to listen and add feeling to it.

for the comment who said "this is not how to play"........usually you find someone else 'covering' how he or she thinks the song is played etc......spend some time there and then come back .....and realize how many artists do this - THIS IS HOW I PLAY IT!. I've seen him many times, will see him again next opportunity....he's a gift - enjoy

Good video, and certainly helpful. I doubt that whoever is working the camera is a guitarist though, because it'd be MUCH more helpful to stay on the straight-on camera instead of switching to the underneath shot at the trickiest parts. Makes it tougher to actually see what the hell Tommy's wizard fingers are actually doing, and where they're fretting....otherwise just amazing.

Her daughter is lucky. And this song is hard to be learned because you should play a fingerstyle type song with a pick. But this song is worthy to learn.
@davidjohnston7106 жыл бұрын
John Mayer, I think those songs we write for reasons of love carry the most passion, and resonate with nearly everyone. He obvious loves his daughter, and probably more than playing guitar, though nearly on a par, I would guess. It’s a privilege to love one’s own family and children. BTW, I really liked your song “Stop this Train”, among others, enough to play it well. One day, on the other side of life even, I hope to strum and pluck with all the great acoustic players I’ve heard in this space. Think they must use golden strings on diamond hollow bodies. 👍🏻

It's incredibly annoying how often the editor changed the view. The view, for example, at 6:17 is basically the only one someone learning from this video would care about, for future editors. Did the editor even play guitar? It's very poorly cut.

what is covering the resonance hole of his guitar? can any one tell me?
Sonicguy95 thnx. So it's a product? We can buy it from ordinary music shops? And is it necessary for every guitar player?
@Sonicguy957 жыл бұрын
Payam Behtash Indeed it is a product. Purchasing one depends on where you're at. My local store is too small to carry such an item. That and they are just not having acoustics fly off the racks (or really any guitars for that matter, they aren't priced competitively enough against online string prices from Amazon or Juststrings.com. I don't know how the doors are still open honestly). A place like Guitar Center or Sam Ash would stock one, I'd hope. Got to remember, acoustic is unpopular and most guys who say they play acoustic have a few electrics around, 1 Yamaha acoustic and the only song they can play is wonderwall. You could also get it online at Musician's Frined (now owned by guitar center) or Amazon. Juststrings.com may even sell them, they sell string winders and guitar polishes.... Are they necessary? NOPE!!! You have to be playing amplified 80% of the time to justify one. Not only that but some pickups deal with feedback better than others. But mainly what causes it is the volume of the amplified sound and the type of guitar you play. Feedback occurs with resonance. On an acoustic, say you strum a C chord. Well the sound waves from the amp get absorbed by the guitar again and produce more and more sound. Basically you feel the strings under your left hand vibrate more and more even though your right hand has done nothing. Its called a feedback loop because from you producing a sound, the amp puts it out, causes the guitar to react, causing that sound to be amplified, causing the guitar to react.... I also forgot to mention that some amps do have some antifeedback electronics. Although from my Marshal, they are good but I wouldn't totally rely on them alone. Tommy needs it because he likes a microphone as a pickup, I think anywhere between 30 to 80% in his mix. I think 50% mic is his go to. That and he plugs into a PA (public announcement) system, this way he doesn't carry around all the amps and he doesn't often play at large events. Some history just because you seem like an absolute newbie. Feedback was a huge issue back in the 50s with rock players using hollow and semi hollow body electrics. Due to feedback, players gravitated to Fender Teles and strats, and Les pauls. Among others, I'm not too good with electic guitar history. I know enough to survive, but I'm just not an electric guy: 3 acoustics and 0 electrics. And I don't even really have a urge to buy one anymore other than a Gretch to play Atkins music or a Byrdland. Anyway solid bodies are (come at me electric players) really just planks of wood. I think the first Telecaster was a fretted wood plank with pickups on it, The fact that they are SOLID bodied, or at least mostly... means they do not react to sound waves like an acoustic does. However not to put feedback down. Ted Nugent loved to play a Byrdland because he could get feedback. He has a special way of setting up his amps so that he can stand is a specific spot and get feedback when he needs it. But for a jazz archtop or acoustic flattop, not so good. So ya about 3 things to avoid feedback. Don't crank an amp too loud, use antifeedback electronics, and know how your position and your amp's position work. If everything else fails or your running a tube amp that may not have such antifeedback mechanisms or you are playing a louder venue or you want the extra prevention, go buy one. As for me being a hobby player, I have absolutely no need for one. The only people who hear me play are family members and my cats! I did a few live and I just don't like it. Too much pressure for a perfectionist like me. Sorry for nagging your ear off but if you got all the way through that: Congrats!! I'm no expert but I've picked up a lot here and there from playing for 7 years. Only other thing I can recommend is get a guitar set up to fit you. I have a Guild DV52 that just babies me. Go back to my first guitar which needs a setup and I fight it so hard due to a high action.

Glad to have this video since it's Tommy himself, but holy shit these are the worst camera angles in the history of guitar lessons. It infuriates me every time I watch it. Why is the camera way up at the headstock, shooting down the neck so that you can't see his fingertips at any point in the lesson? Personally, I think a straight up beginner is better served learning the basic chord shapes from the ~400k view 12 year old video thats on YT first, then using this once they are comfortable with every chord, to add the nuance of the right hand.
