Some surprising comments here. I think we can all agree that Tommy Emmanuel is a master of the instrument, and extraordinarily versatile. However, I've seen both of them live, and I've never heard anyone come close to Tony when it comes to Celtic-style guitar, including Tommy. This song isn't the best showcase for Tony's skills (and still well beyond what I can play), and Tony has really refined and perfected his technique in this style of guitar. Tommy is undoubtedly more versatile, but I disagree that he's better (or 'the best'). Most of us here are likely to be players ourselves, and we know that different styles of guitar require very different techniques and theory, and I don't think a straight comparison is really sensible or possible. At any rate, they're both amazing players, and it's great to see them together.

Yes I totally agree that DADGAD tuning is an added handicap to the comparison of Tommy's sound. I play DADGAD myself 90% of the time. I just wish they could have swapped guitars and hear Tommy play the Greenfield. Or both of them playing a Greenfield, two great player with two great instruments. In spite of the sound inequality it was a beautiful rendition of the song. Thank God for players of this caliber who express such depth in their music playing.

Austin Crow Music what would be the point then. Tony has already done that, you can find two or three already posted on KZbin of him playing this alone. The point here is he's playing a duet with Tommy. In all fairness Tommy probably did not play this through more than once or twice before this was recorded. He's the one who puts himself out there playing with just about anyone at a moment's notice, and then gets criticized because it's less than perfect. Tony has probably been perfecting this piece for years.

@@asandiegoguy Just read the comment and you're absolutely right. Tommy heard the tune once...we went over the progression once more and "roll tape!". The point about him putting himself out there is exactly it. He is just addicted to playing.....I have fond memories of watching him and Kentucky legend Eddie Pennington jamming in the car park at Steve Kaufman's camp in Tennessee- no audience, no agenda, no project in mind....and a full day of teaching ahead and a concert in the evening. This was an on the fly moment- I'm delighted he asked and I love the results.
@Yogamind
@Yogamind 10 жыл бұрын
two equally masterful musicians, the big difference is in the instruments, the Maton really lets down Tommy's sound, it doesn't match Tommys sweet expression. In fact if it wasn't for Tommy's incredible playing the Maton would sound cheap compared to the Greenfield, its not a fair match/comparison. I wonder if Tommy plays the Maton as an Australian patriot or if he actually prefers it to other more sophisticated instruments? Perhaps he likes how flat the tone of the Maton is for amplification reasons. I am interested if anyone else as similar opinions about the sound quality of the 2 guitars?
@stephen25uk
@stephen25uk 10 жыл бұрын
I completely agree that in this video the Greenfield blows the Maton away. But it's worth remembering that Tony uses very heavy guage strings which come across very well in this recording. Also I somehow feel the Maton suits Tommy's frenetic touring schedule and the huge variety of his musical styles. I somehow don't see him bashing out guitar boogie on that Greenfield which is perfect for the Celtic music of Tony McManus.
@Yogamind
@Yogamind 10 жыл бұрын
Stephen Powell All of what you say is reasonable and true. I just think Tommy outclasses the Maton in spite of the the reasons why he uses it. At the same time it could be said a master player musician of Tommy's caliber makes the Maton sound as good as it possibly could. To make an average instrument sound good takes a real master.
@stephen25uk
@stephen25uk 10 жыл бұрын
Glenn Ceresoli Yes, I really wish Tommy would occasionally try a really fine bespoke tonewood guitar. It was quite revealing when he commented (somewhat enviously?) on what a great sounding guitar Laurence Juber's Martin was after they jammed together at LJ's studio (video on KZbin).
@keoughk001
@keoughk001 9 жыл бұрын
Glenn Ceresoli The reason for not being fair is DADGAD vs. standard tuning. One has the advantage of allowing the open strings to sustain while the other has to fret to accomodate.

Great players in their own right. But it seems like Tommy doesn't know the melody, and his embellishments are mostly distracting. He's awesome and versatile, but it's pretty clear that he's not a folk musician with the way he's playing all over the place. Or maybe he 'd just never heard this piece before. Still, I appreciate this performance. Thanks for the upload.
