Joe hipp was one of the most exceptional heavyweights ever!!! For a fighter that never seemed to be in good condition he was one hell of a fighter and fought every tough guy out there, Bruce seldon, Tommy morrison (as seen here), Alex garcia,Ross purrity and Bert cooper. And in each of those fights Joe always let the other guy know that they were in there with a real fighter!!! Joe is definitely among my favorite heavyweights.

What happened to Morrison in the Mercer fight was that early in the fifth Tommy got turned completely around and was actually facing away from Mercer when he got tagged. He attempted to turn himself around but by the time he did so it was too late. Watch the fifth round in 1/4:speed and you can see Tommy standing in the corner facing away from Ray as Ray gets ready to pulverize him. No rules broken here, but not the best display of sportsmanship. When Carlos Monzon fought Rodrigo Valdez and Tony Licata, both fighters managed to get turned around in a similar fashion yet both times Monzon took a step back and waited until his opponents had reoriented themselves in a forward position before resuming his attack. I’ve heard many explanations as to why Morrison suddenly got knocked out in a fight where he was ahead on all of the scorecards, but sometimes the simplest explanation is the correct explanation. If you put any fighter in history in the exact physical position that Morrison was in, you would get the exact same result. But don’t take my word for it. Watch it and see if I’m not right
@nikolatatic6770
@nikolatatic6770 4 жыл бұрын
He was in a bad position, and he was great in that fight, but he already lost once to Mercer in the amateurs and I don't think he would of lasted 12 rounds with Mercer in that fight. He was spent by the fifth round, and if he wasn't knocked out in that corner Mercer would find another way to beat him. Eventually he would knock him out. Morrison had the ability to outbox him, but not to overpower him or knock him out because of his steel of jaw. It's a shame to see Tommy lose like that because I think he was a better overall fighter.
@markymarcb4932
@markymarcb4932 3 жыл бұрын
I see your point similarly, yet differently. I’ve dissected the Mercer Morrison fight a billion times, and here’s my overall conclusion: Morrison panicked when Ray began to open up on him in the 5th. Really, it’s that simple. Keep in mind, Morrison was beginning to unravel in the 4th round, but still took Mercer’s best shots. Now, look back at Morrison vs Yuri Vaulin and Ken Lakusta. Fight was going into mid rounds and Morrison was gassing and getting sloppy. Why Morrison’s trainers and management team took the Mercer fight that early in his career is amateurish and a terrible managerial move. They banked on a TKO, but Mercer was in shape and ready and too experienced. If Morrison took on Mercer AFTER Joe Hipp and Carl Williams, I say he beats Mercer by a 12 round UD. Morrison should have fired his whole staff after the Mercer fight. Referee DID put his hands on Mercer to halt the fight, Mercer still got off 3 free deadly shots to an already unconscious Morrison. Total lack of professionalism on Mercer’s part IMO. However, karma bit Mercer in the ass years later. Watch the Mercer vs Briggs fight. In almost uncanny similarity, Briggs catches Mercer on the ropes and hits him to the head until he collapsed. Karma, anyone?
