Tommy ended several fights with a single left to the gut,, the power he had was something special. No one since has had a left like that.
@RossKempOnYourMum014 жыл бұрын
Disgraceful comments from Yuri's trainer. Let's see you eat one of the Duke's left hooks to the body. Ray Mercer said he pooped himself on the stool after Morrison hit him to the body. There probably aren't any harder left hooks in history than Morrison's
@TimNelson Жыл бұрын
You nailed it. Disgraceful. Humorous how the smarmy trainer named two no-name sparring partners who apparently punch as hard as Tommy, tasked with preparing the big southpaw for Morrison’s body attack. What a load of garbage. Stupidly can be humorous. Here’s a prime example.

I remember this fight vividly.I was a Tommy fan as a kid and I thought Tommy in trouble in rounds 2-5.Yuri Vaulin was out classing him.Yuri was a very good boxer.Even before pro.Tommy was in excellent shape besides his injured right hand before this fight.Cant believe we never heard from Yuri Vaulin after this.I heard he was driving a taxi in NY to having a boxing camp up there.RIP Duke and hope Yuri is doing well today.Great fight!

Wow ... Tommy in his prime was a beast. Fighting with limited training and a broken right hand. He fought a really game Vaulin with basically his left hand. His left hook, I believe is the best I have have ever seen in the heavyweight division. Better than even Joe Frazier's. He hit harder with it and went to the body. It's a shame Tommy lost himself and never reached his full potential. He had the talent to clean out the division in his prime. Drugs, booze and drugs (and women) destroyed him. A bit like Tyson.

Great skills by Vaulin. His amateur experience really showed BUT Morrison had great power. Always dangerous.

So Vaulin's trainer Tommy Gallagher says Seamus McDonough (sp?) hits just as hard as Morrison. I encourage anyone to watch a McDonough fight, and see if you think he hits anywhere as hard... Clearly Morrison had elite heavyweight power. McDonough? I don't think so.
@RossKempOnYourMum014 жыл бұрын
Tommy's power bailed him out of this fight and many others, sort of like a left hook version of deontay wilder. This should have been a warning sign of how limited tommy really was. Historic left hook power though.

Yauri Vaulin fought Gerry Cooney in the early 70s at Madison Square Garden when the Soviet's Russians Amateur team came to N.Y.C. Cooney did beat Vaulin. This was a good fight for Morrison. Vaulin fought good for awhile but a body shot did him in from winning. Gallagher was unhappy with Yauri Vaulin but that's boxing. Vaulin was honest on his loss and just got caught from the power of Morrison.

I will work on getting that one uploaded eventually. Not sure how the quality will compare to what other people have already made available. I've seen one poor copy and one decent copy of that fight on here. Would you prefer the original PPV version with commentary by Gil Clancy and Tim Ryan, or the delayed broadcast version with commentary by Larry Merchant and Jim Lampley? I should have both.

The first time a fighter turns his back and walks away from a punch, the fight should be over. That was ridiculous. That should be considered the same as quitting.

I think Vaulin got tagged with that left hook in the 5th and then just basically fell apart. I dont think that body shot was enough to make him quit. I just think he felt Morrison's power after that left hook and wanted out.

Morrison needed more tough fgights like this.. 80% of his opponents were utter shit.. There was a reason he avoid heavyweight trial horses like Oliver MCcall, Jesse Fergeson, and Bert Coooper... They had a 50% 50% chance of beating him or making him look bad.

His style was very easy to find out and evade. This russian boxer was really good. Tommy had similar technique as Tyson,but his style was mastered. You can punch hard and accurate if someone is great in movement... but maan,Tommy's hand was like a dynamite and in there is no really way to evade body punches.

Morrison thinks he could beat the Klitschko, he barely got passed Vaulin, who doesn't have a 10th of boxing ability of Wladimir. Wladimir would stop Tommy early and Vitali would give him a beat down. Of course Morrison would have a punchers chance against Wlad, but Vitali can take a punch.

The night I watched this fight and saw Vaulin hurt Morrison ....I knew Tommy would never beat a top-flight heavyweight who was at the peak of his game. And he never did. .... He beat some named fighters (who were all shot by the time he fought them), but most of his wins were against tomato cans. The best white boy I've ever seen fight in my lifetime was the Gerry Cooney who went 13 rounds with Holmes, when Holmes was in his prime. Cooney went to shit after that loss, but was truly a very good fighter when at his best -- far better than Morrison. Cooney at his peak would have KO'd Tommy in five or less. I never liked or disliked Morrison until it was revealed that he fought for seven years and had unprotected sex with women, even though he knew he was HIV positive. Yet there's still dumbasses out there who love him to pieces. ... I'm happy to say, I was never one of them. He was a selfish liar and druggy with a clay chin.
@robertgrissom57605 жыл бұрын
Morrison beat Foreman befor Foreman beat Michael Moorer. Foremen Ko'd Cooney easily. Morrison had the best left hook in heavyweight history. Morrison took punches from Foreman that floored Coony's ass. He wouldn't have been shit in the 90's and fought many past their prime also. Jerryy Quarry would have beaten Cooney also.
