From the 1969 album, Dizzy, this was Tommy Roe's biggest hit selling 6 million copies. A rare pop song with strings, other than The Beatles with Yesterday, in the 60's, the exceptional instrumental backing was provided by The Wrecking Crew. Such a groovy tune. Made Number 1 in the US, UK and Canada. The mini skirt came from England, made popular by Mary Quant I believe Harri. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

I can't speak for the US scene but in UK terms strings on hit pop records was a very well established thing by 1969 when this was a hit. Take a listen to "No Milk Today" by Herman's Hermits (1966) or "Out of Time" by Chris Farlowe (1966) or "King Midas in Reverse" by the Hollies (1967) or "Time Seller" by Spencer Davis Group (1967) or "Everlasting Love" (1968) by the Love Affair for just a few examples.

A few years earlier, and a bit younger, my old man bought me a small kids drum set for Christmas. I had no idea what I was doing, and beat holes in the skins and then smashed the whole set after that. I was a punk before punk! If only I could have channeled all that energy I probably could have done a lot with it, but nobody knew what to do with me, looking back sadly, all it did was get me into trouble, and all I can do now is just listen and enjoy and wonder what might have been.

Actually, that dress was standard - especially for going out in the evening. Girls then knew how to sit, bend over, etc modestly ... even so, many of them had matching panties for "in case". Parents were not usually fond of them ... my parents made me walk around, sit, and bend over to show them how the dress would look. But they still didn't like it ... lots of arguments and tears over our mini dresses! By the way, the dance was exactly what we were doing then. Such great music. Such fun! Thanks for the memories. God bless you.

Love your reaction to finding the original after loving a cover.....and yes that dress could not get any shorter and what I find amazing is it seems we have gone backwards in some things. Personally I always preferred "Heather Honey" to this one - but this was a UK number 1. The song was written by Tommy himself and Freddie Weller - who was a member of Paul Revere and the Raiders - a US band who had a ton of top ten hits in the US, but never did anything like as well in the UK. Comedian Vic Reeves and "The Wonder Stuff" did a cover version of this in 1991 which also got to UK #1 spot. Vic's version is almost a note for note remake but with comedic touches right through.

The skirt would have been shocking in 1965, but by '69 every girl was trying to see how short they could make their skirts, Our High School band uniform was a blazer and a skirt for the girls. The ideal was to get the hem of the skirt to fall no more than an inch below the bottom of the jacket.
