Yes the silicone is waterproof. The curing time will depend on the product itself so always read the manufacturer's instructions. I would say at least 12 hours

Very helpful video. I left the tape on overnight and removed following day - catastrophic - silicone feathering! Key learning point for me is the need to remove tape 'immediately' after applying mastic. Thanks again!!

Very helpful video. It was my first time doing my tub myself and I'm quite happy with the results. Only problem is I accidentally bought transparent silicone instead of white so I have to redo the tub again in a few months... But at least its not moldy anymore :)

Absolutely not. "Flexible caulking at all transitions between dissimilar materials." Grout is not right for this project, 100% silicone is the right choice for longevity and water seal.

Heres the tip from: andy t half fill it with water, first if you seal it empty - it gets stretched a long way if you seal it half full, when you empty the bath, the seal will be in 50% compression and when the bat is full, its in 50% stretch. Makes sense to me, anyone else!

What also helps is running the bead of silicon and then spraying over the line with some soapy water from a spray bottle filled with dishwashing detergent and water "1:10 mix". This prevents the silicon from smudging or sticking to the tiles around the join. Thus eliminating the need for masking tape
@kikii17 жыл бұрын
Yeah, or just use a fugi kit and don't bother with the tape.

Dude... I own a bathroom restoration refinishing business 15 years old.... NEVER USE SILICON Best thing to use in bathroom, believe it or not, is Exterior window and siding calk. It is much tougher, more mildew resistant, and it's paintable. Regular silicon is good for nothing.

Great point about filling the tub 1/2 full of water before doing the silicone seal!
@bassheadjohn11 жыл бұрын
M Peff that is an obsurd comment. "Technically" and maybe on paper but in the real world grouting between a tub and tile will not last more than a couple uses. As soon as weight is in the tub your grout will fall out and/or crack. If you keep your tile and grout sealed your water damn theory doesn't hold up. Tommy Knows! This is a great video with very useful information for someone that might need help doing this job.

@kellerrobert808 жыл бұрын
white spirits I think in the US is commonly known as rubbing or denatured alcohol, but because I'm a Kentucky bourbon man. I'm can't be certain.

Is it necessary to dip in white spirits? Some say water will do...

I've also heard soapy water works better than plain water. Give something a try and if it works, you're done!
@johnbull53947 жыл бұрын
It's NOT alcohol. We call that methylated spirit over here. White spirit is a chemical subsitute developed to replace genuine turpentine. You probably call it turps or turps substitute.

Absolute tosh! If you use grout, as soon as you stand in the bath/fill the bath it will crack. Result = No seal and water ingress for lots of lovely mould to start growing!! Water Dam?? What the heck is that??
@sherisoutham159410 жыл бұрын
This is the first time I've seen the tip about putting two lines of masking tape around the bath to make nice straight edges along both edges. Thank you Tommy's Trade Secrets for this brilliant tip:-) But another tip that sounds good is that you should fill the bath BEFORE applying silicon. This is because if you silicon an empty bath and then fill the bath with water, apparently the weight of the water could split the silicon? Obviously, this is only possible if your bath already has its taps fitted and water connected ;-)

thanks for sharing. I do alot of mastic work but rarely by masking it. I found that you gotta be careful not to allow too much mastic to build up on the tape after you've smoothed it off, as it can then make a mess as you pull the tape away. Personally,i find the sealant smoothing tools work really well,especially the packs of the square pieces of rubber,each with a different size and type of corner or curve on it. Nice job m8.
@thecarpenterant336311 жыл бұрын
Why is it that NOBODY on KZbin knows how to correctly apply silcone/caulk. They all use the gun the wrong way around. The gun should be used MOVING FORWARDS and NOT BACKWARDS. When moving backwards the sealant balloons from the tip spreading upwards and outwards. Applying handle pressure and moving forwards along the seam, the sealent is not only pushed INTO the gap, but it leaves an almost perfect bead in it's wake. Try it and see and then thank me for being right!
