The entire series you are led to believe Thomas Shelby is a super powerful person. And all of his adversaries are as powerful as he is or slightly more but he triumphs. And you realize that on the world scale, what Tommy is doing is child’s play in comparison.

Churchill's men laughed at his demand for an export license for the Empire, like a street peddler asking for a new cart. Someone like Tommy should have asked for import preferences and management of the docks, which makes him more powerful overall. For all his hoo haa we forget he was just a Birmingham gangster and not even the top banana outside of London.

But I don't really understand why though, Churchill in the 30's was not the man he is being portrayed in post-WW2. He was a failure in WW1 as marine minister and responsible for Gallopli and other things. He basically had to go into hiding from politics after WW1 because he messed up. So I don't see why Shelby would admire someone like Churchill based on their interactions or Chruchill's bagage
@theresajv5055
@theresajv5055 2 жыл бұрын
@@pervonhagelbrakare8172 Chruchill was one of the few in the 30's that took the threat of the Nazi's seriously and knew appeasement to fascists would never work out in Britain's favor. But "basically in hiding" is a bit much. He was still Winston Churchill, always a presence no matter what office he held. After the Dardanelles fiasco he was in the "wilderness", as he described it, but never, basically, had to go in hiding. Not literally or figuratively. Also, it's the Peaky Blinders, they obviously are not afraid of taking a little artistic license when it comes to history.
@pervonhagelbrakare8172
@pervonhagelbrakare8172 2 жыл бұрын
@@theresajv5055 Ofc I understand that they have an artistic portrayal of him in peaky blinders, what I am arguing against is the notion that Winston was always held in high regard and the ”living legend”, which is not true. There is a pre-WW2 Churchill and a post-WW2 Churchill, whereas he is the pre-war one in peaky blinders, yet is respected as if he is the post-war one
@theresajv5055
@theresajv5055 2 жыл бұрын
@@pervonhagelbrakare8172 Yeah you got a point. The show does sort of show Churchill getting a post-Dunkirk level of respect long before the average British person would have shown him such respect. But he still would have been a larger than life figure besides politics because of his escape from the Boers and being on the front line in the first world war, Gallipoli or not. But Gallipoli and Churchill "fighting" in the 1st world war could also be a reasom that a common soldier like Tommy might have not respected Chrurchill at all. But hey, it's Peaky Blinders. They had us genuinely wondering if Tommy Shelby was going to assassinate Oswald Mosley in the 1930's or not. It's like Guns of Navarone, it is what it is.

I love what Churchill said about the insanity of life. The pain and remorse of one's actions and the actions of others upon them, breaking you in moments and even with so much, you feel so less. The moment he mentioned "ah that old dance routine" suddenly hit me how pointless that feeling is, followed by "a tent, then house then mansion" argument to the reasons REALLY hit me more than any "inspiring" speeches I ever heard of, "it is something". I love it.

This is one of the rarest scenes from the show, Thomas shelby actually shows his vulnerable side he actually lets churchill to get in. Because he sees the fatherly figure he has lacked all his life. And he also starts to actually follow an idea rather than doing things that can keep his traumatic war memories and sharpness alive. It is a very important scene to see the character development. These scenes marks the point where he decides to explore new things instead of keeping that relentless 'I need to survive' fear and rage active.
