Ian Stewart was tough as nails. If he had died young like Steve Prefontaine I'll bet there might be some movies about him. As of right now I can't even find a single documentary. What a shame.

Absolutely no-one could outsprint Ian Stewart! His most blistering sprinting secured him a bronze medal in the greatest 5k ever run - at the '72 Olympics. In the 1960s, in all U.K. races, three males won most every domestic event entered - Ian Stewart, Ron Hill, David Bedford. David was unbeatable as a schoolboy. Thus reading 'Athletics Weekly' results got quite predictable!

Superb run. Did very well to come back after the Russian had passed him. Good bronze for team-mate Alan Blinston too.A very successful Euros for GB with six golds, from fewer events than now.

Remember a race that Stewart had against Gammudi(sp). He ran the last lap in 51. Stewart clearly had some "wheels."
A slow time in what appeared to be a very tough race.

A tactical championship race and the heat of Athens made the race slow.

Ian Stewart was a far better athlete than Brendan Forster but was never afforded the same celebrity status, like not getting a job with the BBC, as every GB athlete good or bad, seems to have nowadays.

far better athlete? Foster beat Stewart in Montreal 5000 after having won Britain's only track medal of games in 10k. Foster had faster pbs at 1500, 3000, 5000 and 10k.

@@teamroyal5545 Looking from a distance (from Finland), their achievements seem about equal. Both were European champions and both got bronze at the Olympics.

@@runningblood58 ...and running 13:20 in the 5000m heats at Montreal probably killed any chances that Foster or Dixon had for a medal in the Final!
