Reminds me of a time I was in a chinese takeaway in Dublin about 15 years back. It was late at night and we were the only ones out in the front of the takeaway apart from the young Dublin lad working behind the counter. While waiting for our order the phone rang and the Dublin lad answered it in full on chinese accent asking to take their order. Then he looks over at us, puts the phone aside and says "ahh sure ya know, you have to".

I *am,* all my life, an anti-racist. Yet this never ever ever ever gets old. My face is absolutely saturated. I don't consider this racist. Tommy Tiernan is just phenomenal. And anyone who says otherwise will face a *Nation* of former teacher accent-imitating Class Clowns to deal with. You really have to grow up in Ireland to grasp that imitation & slagging is as everyday normal, and well meaning, as carrying the chipper dinner *inside* your jacket on an icey cold winter's night ☺️ But is it really just an Irish thing? That we can't help ourselves from imitating teachers, to immitating the Parish Priest? I can't remember a single day in my life, from childhood to adulthood, when somebody of every and any age in the family, community, the local shop, the radio, friend's & friend's of friend's, neighbours, wedding and funeral congregants, wasn't taking-off/imitating somebody in the known group, even ppl unknown to the group, and/or a celebrity or public figure. It is not, and was never, something isolated to, or exclusively for, a Stand-up Comedian. Or "comedy writers". (They are just far better at it, and have a repertoire of far more of it!) It *is* just an implicit impulse in most if not all of us. An impulse that is never meant to cause harm or upset (and frankly, to be Irish is to be robust enough to *endure* your moment of being imitated and slagged. It is....like a social test, to be *embraced* into the tribe, rather than getting only as far as mere arms-length formal civility. Which is why English Brits get more mercilessly slagged than any other ethnicity, Nationality, Culchie, Jackeen, ...or even YANKEE!! 😈) That said. There is zero room for yankees or English-Brits trying *and failing* to imitate the Irish. Just, no. 😐 Hell! Even in *Primary School* we would imitate accent & vocal/behavioral mannerisms of Thatcher, Paisley, Adams and more. John Major was one that always got everyone rolling bcoz of the froggy-croaky throaty voice. ....but also just the NI accent in general (bcoz we couldn't always seperate one accent from the other, but oh boy did we definitely know the substance of the arguments/comments/rhetoric of both sides of the conflict)

I wish everyone in the world could see the comedy in this rather than feeling empowered to take offence by the fake message of hijacked PC. Not belittling other people was a great idea, but it was taken completely out of context by small minded, vindictive idiots and then they ran with it. Racism is racism, jokes are jokes. People with a little intelligence can tell the difference, but the vocal village idiots can shout loud enough to drown out all the moderate voices, which is very sad. Tommy didn't do my accent in this routine, but I'm pretty sure that if he had I would have seriously endangered a few ribs watching this.

I'm 3rd generation scottish, no.4 was sligo irish. on the male side, we were midly musical, fiddle, piano, harmonica, guitar and a bit of singing.I worked on the humour bit. At no time did we ever reach the level of reality dislocation that Tierney has achieved. Even at our most mental we had fairly firm holds on propriety and decorum. Must've been at least 2 distinct genetic groupings in Ireland at that time. Now on me wifes side, hah, different game altogether...her backgrounds very similar but there's definitely a touch of the surreal in her...she got the drinking and the dancing and the talking. Ah yes, the patter, the craick, is blest in this one...indeed. Wouldn't have it any udder way, the cow...
