I never understood the legs argument. Why would classic physique competitors need these big legs? I think it throws off the proportions and aesthetics. If you look at the guys in the 70's they never had bigger legs than Wesley and they looked much more aesthetic than the top guys here

You're absolutely right in what you said about legs. A nicely developed set of legs should be all that you need in classic, but everyone's blowing them up and honestly it should be a red flag. Classic physique should always be about symmetry and nice proportion and lots of people's views are so distorted now because of mens open. They don't want to admit it, but it's true. Men's open nowadays is pushing the limits and people who compete and judge classic physique still have that mens open bias. The obvious fact was that Wesley was one of the more classic and aesthetic bodybuilders on stage, yet they did not award him properly. Again, it's that mens open bias. "Oh he's not big enough..." "Oh he's not shredded enough.." "Oh he's too big and blocky..." See what I mean? Don't know wtf they want. Wesley was not going to make top five because they weren't going to let him have it from the start. Hopefully things will get better because Shawn Rhoden just dethroned Phil in mens open. It's only natural that CLASSIC physique will return to its true origins when the likes of Zane, Arnold, Haney, and Oliva ruled.

Honestly I think the two things that are holding Wesley back are his style of posing and leg development. With such long legs on a tall frame, any lack of thickness or definition is going to be more easily exposed. And his posing I think he tries much to hard to look “Classic”. His front double bicep he should do a slight twisting version to high his high lat insertions and his slightly “blocky” look. Along with many other poses I think he should experiment and practice different versions of his mandatories that will give the illusion of more thickness than looking classical.

YES 100% right , He has no hamstrings no quads especially the sweeps and was flat and stringy and his shoulders are over powering and his tan was very bad uneven , He was told what to do to fix things and to start tanning two weeks before the show but he doesn't listen , Wesley vissers won the Chicago pro as everything was in balance and his legs were blown up and everything fitted together , But this Arnold package was totally unbalanced and his leg was just one straight line from the back because he stopped training his calf's saying that they were big enough which is totally the wrong thing to do , Look you cannot win shows in today's judging criteria with thin legs , . Hopefully he can balance everything together like he did for the win for the Chicago pro.

I'm glad he's taking an extended period of time off to re-consider his options, re-tool, re-boot. He's 26. And he's so fucquing tall that it's going to take him at least two years to properly come into his own. Think of it this way: all the guys you see doing really, really well have reached about 90-95% of their potential. They have quality physiques that are pretty much maxed-out. Yes, they'll refine them, but none of the top guys will be making giant leaps. From my point-of-view, I'd say that Wesley has only reached about 75% of his potential. I've commented elsewhere as to what my advice to him would be moving forward, but in a nutshell, I think he needs to go all-in with the Arnold 2.0 notion. Legs, obviously. Back, yes. But for me, his arms are not yet in proportion to his frame. I think the last time he measured them for his channel, they were just over 20". I believe he needs to add two inches of quality muscle. His arms do not pop. They are not a hallmark of his physique, and they need to be. Putting aside the physical aspects, he needs to study Arnold's posing routines, even the photo shoots to see how he needs to present himself, because what I'm seeing of him on stage is him doing the same as everyone else...which is doomed to failure. Even worse, as noted elsewhere here in the Comments section, he doesn't _expand_ on the stage, he doesn't lord over his opponents, but rather, actually contracts. His potential is 6'3" at 247 lbs (the current weight limit for his height, if I'm not mistaken), and at that size, he should make most of his opponents look like shrimps. To me, the big question is going to be What is he willing to do to make the changes he needs to work on? Because I don't see him winning if he limits himself to the comfortable gym existence he has working out with his brother and his girlfriend. As I've previously said, he needs to get dirty with the big boys. (I have some names that come to mind, but I'll leave that for another time.) For all his ardent supporters out there: Have patience; the best of Wesley may take a while to be delivered, but when he arrives at _his_ 95%, the wait will have been worth it.

I know this may be a unpopular opinion but I dont like a lot of classic physique guys bodies. A lot of them look really small or soft and I think the big issue is the weightclasses. They have to deplete themselves and keep size down in areas that need to improve just to make a weightclass. Instead of weightclasses the judges should just focus on rewarding classic physiques and punishing unclassic ones. Like Arnold at his biggest couldnt make his weight limit and Arnold didnt even have big legs. Rafael Brandao is classic as fuck imo and hed have to lose 40 pounds for his weight limit. That's absurd A mans weight isnt what makes them classic,its their lines proportions waist posing and symmetry. If the judges focused on that and got rid of weightclasses the division would be a lot better imo. Placing would make more sense and guys would be able to make the improvements they need to.

I went to a clinic / Workshop of a organization for what they're expecting and looking for in each division and one of the judges told me that classic physique is primarily for short guys or shorter guys and that someone of my height won't have a good chance. Has anybody heard anything like that?

This is the problem. The judges are still using the traditional bodybuilding points scoring system, that's what they have and that's what they use. They dont have a separate points scoring system for classic. That's why the winners here just look like scaled down open builders....

I think what a lot of people fail to understand is that "Classic" doesn't mean "Golden Era" like most people think, they are looking for the balance of mass, conditioning, and aesthetics that was seen in the 80s and 90s, that's why they are rewarding guys like Breon and Peterson because they bring all 3. If Wesley wants to do better he needs to drop the whole mimicking Arnold act and come in more conditioned and with some more size in his legs to match up to the top guys.

As long as Steve Weinberger is in charge of the judging in bodybuilding the public/bodybuilding will always suffer. He is the man who single handily ruined bodybuilding in the 90's when he started to reward mass over everything else. It started with his buddy Dorian and continues to this day. Now open bodybuilding is all Butt and Gutt. They look like 6lbs of sh** in a 5lb bag. But the ray of hope was classic physique. Unfortunately Steve has ruined this as well. I think he wants classic to be smaller versions of open. Thats not what the public wanted, in this division. We want to see the aesthetics, lines, shape, tiny waists etc. Wesley Vissers has the perfect classic physique and he sits at tenth? Its mind blowing. And poor Arnold. when he interviewed George he thought it was Steve. George can't hit a vacuum. its laughable. Weinberger and a few other judges are the problem. They prefer mass over everything else. Frank zane said it best. He said judges always pick physiques that represent what they would want to look like. They dont consider the fans. Wesley, Calum, Frank Zane,Lee Labrada, Francis Benfatto Bob Paris, Sean Ray, Flex in 93 have/had the ideal Physique that appealed to the masses. And back in the day they also displayed their physiques beautifully and treated it like an art. I watched the Arnold this year and it didnt even seem like a bb show. it has become a circus of events. What happened to a competitor coming out to a choreographed routine, with music, and taking pride in his presentation. Its a disaster now.

Personally I do not like the late 2010s.. quite frankly I didn't care for Jay Cutler and Ronnie Colemans look that much.. but I'm a big fan of Jay Cutler personally.... But, have you ever seen a guy better from top to bottom than Phil Heath? I don't like his physique as well as some, but I am trying to give credit where it's due.. . and in my eyes I don't think I've ever seen anybody that was any more on point than Shawn Rhoden at the 2018 Mr Olympia.. They are telling us what the standard is with their selection of winners, whether we agree with it or not. Yes, Wesley stood out in that line up. All those reasons he stood out were the same reasons they placed him where they did. The rest of those guys were approximately the same size and build. They want smaller guys in this class.

Tom what do you think about George Peterson's win, I think he really deserved to win because he brought the best physique but people keep saying his physique is not classic which is crazy to me because what is truly classic is a bit subjective as not all guys from the classic era looked the same way, for Christ sake serge nubret was a classic bodybuilder and he looks even more muscular than George P... Please I need to know what you think I feel like I'm the only one seeing how ridiculous this claim of George not being classic enough is... There wasn't only one type of look in the classic days, you don't have to be arnoldesque to be classic. Even Franco Colombo and ferrigno were more densely muscled than George, only George is more conditioned

If the judges want to actually put the 'classic' in classic physique, they're going to need to reward shape over overall musculature and conditioning, which is something they're not going to do. Classic physique isn't what we thought it was going to be, its just weight limited bodybuilding.

Wesley easily beat the guy next to him but not the rest of them. His conditioning was off and his posing was just plain horrible. You can make a case for him coming 8th but nothing more.

I have competed in natural bodybuilding, I consider my physique having nice proportion. However, the very first think you realise when you compete is that that does not win shows. Cuts and hardness do. I do love simetryand aesthetics, and for me that should be rewarded much higher. Having said that; all the guys in front of him had better legs and back.

Maybe the placing was tough,but I personally don't see the comparison with Arnie.the 2 key aspects of Arnolds physique was his peaky bis and thick chest.These are weak points of wesleys physique.Apart from his 2 variation poses which resemble Arnie just in design,imo there is no compatibility.Can you isolate any glaring comparisons?However he looked abit better than 8 and 9th,but really tough to make any judgement on pics and vids

He should've been in top six. Awarding him such a backward place is a disrespect not only to his potential but also to the division's name i.e. Classic Physique. They placed Sadiq 6th but honestly he was at his worst, we've seen him really better in past years when he competed at Mr. Olympia MP. Like you said, of course Wesley isn't as aesthetic and huge as Arnold was (also he isn't at his best right now) but his structure greatly syncs to Arnold's back in golden era. Arnold himself overlooked his kinda physique, and that's a shame. That's life actually, things and perspectives change with time. Strongest are bet upon, not the deserving.

Wesley was so massively hyped last year with people saying he'd win the Olympia that it feels like the judges are deliberately under scoring him to prove a point. Edit: 7th looks great but 8/9th are nowhere near Wesley.

What’s killing Wesley in Classic physic is his wide waistline. When a guys waist is that blocky they have to grow their legs and upper body a lot more to give the elision of looking aesthetic.

He's blowing his body out of proportion go look at when he won the chargo pro , he had great balance and his legs were full , you aren't going to win shows in your out of condition , Wesley just doesn't know how to come in pealed and full and in balance with a good tan , he had a bad tan last time and he had a bad uneven tan this time , he just doesn't want to listen.

Wesley should have placed 8th. 9th and 8th place had similar conditioning, worse structure, and less mass. I could see why 7th would beat him though. Even though wesley outmasses 7th, 7th is much more detailed through the legs. Wesley's legs definitely have the mass, but lack detail/hardness.

You are reading a lot into very poor images. Hope this discussion can be led again with hi res material. The outcome might be the same though. Wesley gets relegated for being European. Same as Hoffmann, or earlier Schlierkamp, Wolf and Munzer. Competing markets, I guess.
