My guitar teacher told me that the first lesson. I was about 24 and sat down and told him after 10 years I still felt stuck and that my moves were all based on feel. I told him I’d pretty much just learned a bunch of licks and combined them after trial and error. I’d taken guitar class, choir, and music class all growing up but always improvised during our band concerts haha. He said listen, if you wanna learn your way around the neck triads are the way to go. Start there and start learning the hell out of them and then maybe start to learn your progressions using them. The story goes on and on, but yes, triads, triads, triads. Rick Beato has some good concise content about them and a book. Just pick a teacher and go for it. We’re so lucky to have such talented instructors online giving away information like this for free. My lesson on triads ten years ago (I’m now 34 and still love triads) was 35 bucks for an hour.

It’s CAGED btw
@ccmusic22494 жыл бұрын
I stumbled upon the CAGED system after I learned music theory(I'm a classically trained violinist). I started memorizing the intervals on the guitar of each chord shape in arpeggios because C and G work that way. Then I started working my way through my inversions because I heard them in Folsom Prison Blues and boom, there was the CAGED pattern. It's not so much a pattern as it is a naturally occurring reality in E standard. It's been a great boon for me because I already knew intervals, and therefore I can spell out new chords and find the best frame for making any combination of intervals. CAGED isn't the end all be all, but it definitely helps unlock the fretboard.
@TomoFujitaMusic4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment! You can apply your violin skills to your guitar playing! To me, guitar is key of E instrument and it's supposed to be easy to play if you only play those open chords but... "Triads, intervals...are KEY!!!

After learning the triad approach from you many years ago I feel my songwriting has become much better. With CAGE/shapes you can easily throw together notes that sound fine together and get started with very little practice, but achieving a specific emotional feel you want to express is more about intervals

Yeah, I think knowing shapes like the CAGED system can keep you from sounding noticeably bad which is good when you are very inexperienced, but you have to understand intervals and degree changes in order to truly be articulate with the notes you play... this is a great video. i think guitar learning is trapped by how easily it is picked up using concepts such as shapes, but then you cannot advance easily without re-doing the basic scales, triads, and other theory. compared to piano or even fretless string instruments, you get to skip a lot of basic concepts and go straight to songs which may not be easy to learn from without good guidance such as what we get now from Tomo. so this is really cool to help people who know some basics to get past the bump to really dive into intermediate and advanced musical ideas. I like the CAGED concepts as a way to connect familiar chord shapes with scalar patterns and chord tones. It serves as a good reference to find those notes, scales and arpeggios on the fretboard. I tend to think in terms of chord triad shapes on the neck, and find the scale notes from there. I know other guitar players that think in terms of scales, and use those notes to find the chord tones. Recently discovered your videos, great content.

I think best thing for me was to learn CAGED but thinking in pentatonic scales connected to each inversion of the chord - Minor Pentatonic for minor chords, Major pentatonic for Major( I and IV ) chords, and actually a weird thing, Minor pentatonic moved a fifth up from the V chord (contains cool chord tones). It automatically implies stronger chord tones in a given pentatonic scale, and it makes improvised solos more related to the underlying chord progression :) Important to note is if playing for example over E major chord, I could easily switch between all 5 pentatonic shapes, because each one of them relates to a given chord shape in CAGED, so I have some freedom of fretboard whilst still being aware where the chord tones are :)

A good video, I found the overlapping exercise great because that's exactly the way I benefit from this system. Now if I philosofize about the guitar, there's always a system in which you're caged, even if you're using alternative systems, else you're swimming in space without direction.This doesn't mean you could be darn creative within a system, musical greetings Vic.

That's funny. I just signed up for your guitar wisdom site February 1st. Today while I was watching the first triads lesson, I thought to myself, I'm glad I know the CAGED shapes so I can link these triads to a corresponding shape. If I didn't know how to visually map CAGED over the fretboard, I would have been lost and overwhelmed with all the vertical and horizontal triad patterns on the different string sets. But because I can, I was easily able to remember them. Each vertical triad patten fitting into a CAGED shape with its corresponding pentatonic box.

This is exactly how I use the CAGED map to reference other concepts. I never new it was called CAGED until a few years ago, but when I heard that I knew instinctively what they were talking about. Before that all I knew where full chord fingerings, penatonic and major scales, but didn't quite see how they were connected until I could identify chord tones (triads) all over the neck. I still think of triads as shapes most of the time, but I'm always working toward the goal of hearing them and getting my fingers to them without having to think about the shapes. And then sometimes I just play music and not think about it much at all...that's the best...

Learn all 7 modes and you basically have all the positions and how they connect. But it's interesting to think about the various chord shapes as a base for the scales. E shape, A shape, G shape and C as you showed. thx

@@christiancevallos9820 everyone will tell you differently, but I'd say as long as you're learning the pentatonic or major you should be good, as that's how most guitarists I've met started. So CAGED connects the position to the shapes you need to achieve a particular key? So i am trying to use this idea and run through the circle of 5ths in each neck position calling out the key so I know what each key feels like in each position. Seems like it will help for playing through changes.

I'm a major CAGED advocate. I think it's easily one of the most misunderstood guitar tools. It is an easy way to find chord tones all over the fretboard. It makes fretboard visualization and memorization much easier. The applications go far beyond just the major shapes you get in most introductions. You can apply the same idea to minor chords, extensions like 7ths, 6ths and 9ths, etc. Anybody wanting to play melodic solos should take the time to get it in your head and under your fingers.

Thanks so much for this great insight! I have a question, you apply the same practice routine to other chord triads, namely minor, diminished and augmented? are there other forms you would feel are important to practice?

You're welcome! Very simple! If you understand Major triads so all you need is to move M3 to m3 so no need to memorize anything new!

It’s all the same. I learned a lot from the CAGED approach. But I don’t think of it as a shape. I know the notes. The degrees of the scale in each position. It’s just perspective. I have the Berkeley Book as well.

My biggest escape from caged was music theory and the chromatic scale. Just understanding everything is build on the Major Scale and the Major Scale is "do re me fa sol la ti do", is a big breakthrough if you don't know anything about music, also the Chromatic Scale to be able to read your guitar.

I’ve really enjoyed your videos so far. Thank you for sharing them. But as a student I find it more useful to learn about what to do, instead of what not to do. The caged system has been a great starting point and model to expand upon and grow from. It made learning triads easier for me. I think 10 minutes on the triad system instead of 10 minutes talking negatively about a system would have been more beneficial. But again, thank you for sharing you knowledge.

The reality is that you can simultaneously speak positively about a system and also speak negatively about a flawed system. TomoFujitaMusic has thousands of positive videos teaching real stuff (not caged). Silly criticism and fairly typical of the cultish nature of CAGED advocates.

Tomo I have a question... I love music. Its therapy and its amazing at the same time..... I have always wanted to ge tbetter at guitar.. but the thing is.. I like different styles of music but how do I reallly know what style I want to play?. I like metal guitar. Blues guitar. But Infeel like I know very little to the styles and when I try to attack it, i get discoursged easily and Inquestion, is this really something I want to do? Maybe im just being lazy

Don't worry! No hurry! You need to settle water. But if you have foundation, then you will have much more freedom. I learnt the caged positions, and I know the major scale position too...but I have no idea how that knowledge is supposed to be applied. When I'm playing pentatonics, how do either major scale or caged triads affect what I play? I'm playing pentatonics, so...I can't play both, or all three at once! Someone, please explain..

Here's what i did, i learn all the 12 positions of closed voice triad but just major and minor for starters. Then i apply the major scale to each major chords in the progression, instead of just memorizing the full 5 shapes of major scale, you can see that the root note of the major scale pattern starts on one of the 6 strings. Know the shapes and the root note and you should be able to recall what corresponding major scale pattern for each one of the 12 closed voice triad. Use the aeolian mode for the minor chords. At this stage your focus should be on the 3rd of the chords, learning arpeggios help in this too.
Ha ha! Thanks so much! I teach much more detail video lessons and super easy theory lessons at my Guitar Wisdom! Just added new lessons!! tomojustfunky.com/tomo-fujita-guitar-practice-advice/
