All 872 posts would have had a siren to sound the attack warning red (air attack in a few minutes). There was also a black warning (nuclear fallout on the way) made with flares. These were classed as explosive devices and we were not allowed to have them at the posts. They were supposed to be delivered by some mysterious means if we were ever put on alert, The observation towers were not part of the nuclear reporting role. There was s period when we were dong both aircraft tracking and nuclear, But I don't think we were expecting to see soviet bombers and jump in the shelter if a bomb came off one, The post I was on at High Easter had no tower when I was there. Recommend "Forewarned is Forearmed" by Henry Buckton if you can still get a copy.

Wow that's awesome to hear from someone who actually served in one mate and high easter is round the corner from me! Thanks for the useful information, I knew I had a load of mistakes and misinformation in there🤣👍 I found a flare box in the orlit tower of Brent Pelham a couple of years ago.
