Well said, Niall! I love an honest video. I'm pretty sure that some of the very impressive USA farm videos are edited (censored!) so that everything's always positive and heroic and perfect and noble and great. Too many USA flags on show for my taste. It's like watching a propaganda film made by Disney to impress Russian, Chinese, and North Korean viewers. Tom (and other top guys like Farmer Phil) are just ordinary working farmers. They may have bad luck or even make the occasional mistake, but showing it honestly and not trying to cover things up just makes me admire and respect them more. :-)

When I was at my first job Tom, bit younger than you chap said 'I've made a balls up, hope I make a lot more else I'll not live long'. Just one of my early lessons. Another of course was 3 point linkage. Remember it was on tractors like mine. Last year hooking up the plough, left arm in position, slip pin in. Alter height of adjustable arm and line up hole if necessary. Put top link on, lengthening or shortening as required. Hadn't done it for??? about 50 years but still remembered. Bit different on new tractors, equipment of course. Hey I couldn't even drive your tractor until you showed me how lol.

When attaching 3 point linkage make sure you are in line to implement and attach left link arm first as you look at back of tractor and that way if right hand link is not in line you can screw it up and down with levelling handle, then attach pto shaft top link etc 😊

Tom it just saying the topper is one of the hardest things to put on anything else if a lot easier in my opinion.
@CJSlayerrr6 жыл бұрын
Hi Tom, I think the thing with 3 point machines (especially mowers) is that you have the attachment level, then it's just getting experience of reversing the tractor level with it. Just a case of experience of hooking up.
@kaceybowman91106 жыл бұрын
When ur backing the tractor put ur arms of the tractor underneath, and then lift the arms up from outside using the lever, and guiding the arms on. Then put the pto on and top link. That’s how we do it anyways, hopefully it helps. Great vids
@d78406 жыл бұрын
Most farmers i work for have stopped using toppers now and just use their silage mowers to top, they say it cuts cleaner and the field grows back much quicker. If there is too much grass left behind they row it up and bale it!.

Personally I go for each arm, pto and then top link, but that’s dealing with a little semi offset topper on a fierce simple tractor,was taught how to put on the 3 point link properly in college but still just pull and drag it until it fits

Tom a bit of advise for you.. went topping do your rounds first as normal and when stripping start in middle and work your way from the middle out as in right to left which will caus less damage to field and the same applies to rolling silage ground and also I'll c you lamma 2020

Nice 1 mate. Not this week but years ago now I did a lot of bail carting for a mate jd tractor front loader artic trailer he was bailing I was carting last load in the dark I finished and watched where he left the field as like I sed it was pitch. I must have been a meter to the side of where he left the field and I got stuck right down to the axles fully loaded couldn’t believe it
@MH-2705 жыл бұрын
When hooking on an implement most people make the mistake of not going back enough as when they stop and pull the hand brake on quite often the tractor will move slightly and may result in a struggle when putting in the pins. Also I find that if u get stabiliser arms instead of chains it will hold the arms in the right spacing for the implement a minute spent before backing up to the implement help a heck of a lot
@GEOFFKV60806 жыл бұрын
Its just practice putting something on Tom. Make sure your square on to the implement makes life so much easier. Another little tip grease the power shaft before youve got it on the tractor youve got loads of room to work that way. Cracking video

Hi. I’m here in rep of Ireland. There’s a unit for sale made here in Ireland called dromone quick link. It’s a quick hitch that you bolt into your implements , fertilizer spreader , topper , mower etc. you can attach any implement in seconds. Very handy. There’s a video here on KZbin of it working.
@farminstoltzfus6 жыл бұрын
We call it "clipping" here in the States. What grass species do you have in your pastures? Orchardgrass can get away from us in the spring that it will need to be mechanically cut to get regrowing and our perennial ryegrass will shoot a head n go dormant as soon as it gets hot n dry in mid summer and might clip pastures again after significant rain or when I irrigate our lagoon water onto the pasture

@adamsandrew55876 жыл бұрын
I think you need to lengthen the top link on the tractor. It seems to be crowded in to the tractor so that when you lift the topper, it throws all the weight to the front. It's also evident when you move the topper into the topping position - the front edge drops to the ground.

@DVVANITY6 жыл бұрын
When attaching the pto I was taught to put bottom 3 point linkage on then connect pto then top link as it frees up space to move about inside the space also line it up mower pto with pto shaft and butt it up to shaft before trying to slide it on that way any adjustments left or right just turn mower pto till it slips on 👍

@normfergus84726 жыл бұрын
Tom I think you will find that the topper has a breakaway mechanism which allows the machine to swing back should it hit a solid object such as a strainer post this can be adjusted to stop the topper swing back under normal operation i.e. When the ground is dry and there is more friction. Hope this makes sense

Glad you left in your mistakes we have all made them in our younger days, that's how you learn. However i would have kicked your arse for taking out the tedding machine! When contracting years ago i had a runaway and overturned my beloved Massey Ferguson. It was brought out to me on the dealers low loader several weeks later with the latest cab on. It started to rain whilst i swapped the machine over, first load out slid it on it's side into a deep ditch. Good explanation of why do topping, animals will eat that spindly stuff after it has been cut.

I was wondering if using a Rotational Grazing system would avoid you having to perform 'topping'. I believe the theory is that you create small paddock with the cattle in which they are forced to eat whatever grass is there, even the stuff they don't like, then the next day or day after you move them to the next small paddock with newer grass. Effectively you get the cattle to do the topping for you.
@TomPembertonFarmLife6 жыл бұрын
Matthew Taylor I agree this would be a lot better, some people call it "mob grazing" the issue we have is that we don't have water troughs everywhere and would struggle with that system

Hello! I want to hear your thoughts about this? A farmer here in Sweden couple of years ago said in a farmers magazine: Move your cows more often instead of moving! Then the straws they will not eat won’t be not so many. His question was: Do you like to eat on a dirty plate! If your answer is no, then the cows won’t either. Their poop will be all over the place after cutting with that machine,yes? Btw that tractor seems nice, but i prefer the sound of 6 cylinder engine!👍🏻🚜 Do you have any 6 cylinder tractor on your farm ?
