Burke is commenting about a hundred years after the English Civil War. That era prefigured the French Revolution in terms of chaos and violence. The main difference is that other countries stayed away from Britain while other countries invaded France. This meant that the French Revolution had to spread to survive while the English could sort out their problems alone.

ow is an expanding and (roughly) chronological list of links to European history videos (generally these feature lecturers who summarize material well and deliver it in an engaging way, such as Tom Richey and Paul Sargent, or great animators featuring maps that illustrate the passage of events geographically). The units correspond to those of AP EURO (see link all the way at the end). A few videos on a 'Crown and Church estates' series from Marty Rady (of University College London) are sprinkled in, which feature the importance of Central Europe, an area that is generally not covered sufficiently in most introductory courses. While most of these materials are appropriate for AP Euro students, undergraduates, particularly those who want a refresher before taking more advanced courses, and life-long learners may also benefit from them. These materials compare quite favorably with 'massive open online courses' (MOOCs), and often are better, IMHO. Combined with a reading of some primary sources (many now easily available online in translation) and viewings of art from the eras covered (many great works can be viewed in high-resolution online), one can acquire a fairly good understanding of the last 500 years or so of European history in a relatively short period. Anything comparable would simply not have been possible for most people 20 years ago, and probably not even 10 years ago. Kudos to the content providers! 10:29 is not entirely accurate - she was conspiring with her Austrian brothers to flee France with Louis and her children. The idea was for the royal family to flee, then for France and Austria to engage in a war that would hopefully weaken and end the Revolution, and finally, for the royal family to step back in and bring back the monarchy with them being back in power. There were letters of this exact plan that were found, so she was certainly guilty of treason. Louis' letters also proved this to be true. While I do feel like Marie Antionette was treated unfairly due to many things, such as being Austrian, not having a child with Louis for a number of years, being framed for the Diamond Necklace affair, etc. - there is no doubt that she was conspiring against the Revolution. While the incest charge was not accurate, she was very guilty of treason against her people.
@ALLHEART_ Жыл бұрын
This criticism assumes the French Revolution actually was what it purported to be, namely an authentic reflection of the French people. Even assuming what you say about her is true, and it might well be, it would have been totally reasonable for her and Louis to think "Oh, a cabal of radicalized bourgeois intellectuals from the salons have seized control of the country and are subverting the ancient French way of life, we must defeat this". Them attempting to stop their government from being overturned was not treason, unless you genuinely believe what the Jacobins said about themselves and their movement.

1) Marie Antoinette was a traitor. She conspired with the Austrians and gave the plans of the French military, putting thousand of Frenchmen lives at risk. 2) Marie Antoinette was a traitor to the revolution and to France for doing everything possible to bribe influential people in order to overthrow the government. 3) Robespierre and many revolutionaries secretly hoped for the success of the escape of the royal family. It would show out in the open that these scumbags were not interested in french people but in their position. The Republic would have been at once proclaimed. 4) people who study the revolution must understand that at this time monarchy and France were absolutely incompatible.

This is innaccurate. The Girondins were NOT part of the Jacobins - they were in the government with the more dominant Jacobins before they were purged because of the failure in the war of the first coalition. After the Girondins were purged, and Brissot (the leader) was executed, thats when many Girondins left and gave up their position and the Jacobins were able to take power, and only after that is when the reign of terror began.

They were purged because they were scapegoated for the government fucking up the financial situation and because of dumoriez defection to the Austrians, not because of the war itself. seems to be a contradiction here between your claim that the guillotine was an effective equalizer in giving fairly honorable deaths to all that died under it and your belief that marie antoinette's death was barbaric... also, romanticizing burke's idea of "the glory of europe" coming to an end with the death of the ancien regime is asinine and borderline revisionist. even disregarding the fact that "the glory of europe" is such an abstract and supercilious concept to begin with, the monarchy was restored after the end of the revolution anyway. the death of marie antoinette was no more a death of the old system than it was a reintroduction of stability.

Jamie Ramone In a way I think its possible to feel some sympathy with Robespierre. He started with good intentions and wanted to make France a ' better ' place. However with the events that occured throughout his time in government like threats of foriegn invasions, the royalist threat from within and the instability of the country I think he turned into a paranoid meglamaniac. But I think that was because of what happened he became like that rather than he was always like that

"He started with good intentions and wanted to make France a ' better ' place" same for Pol Pot.

Jamie Ramone Pol Pot was estimated to of killed a quarter of cambodias population. Theres a huge difference there. You cant just place individual humans from different periods of time into one basket together. Thats over simplifying history

Both megalomaniacs, both started with noble intentions, both killed at least tens of thousands. Over simplification, maybe. Valid comparisons, definitely.

"It has been said that terror was the mainspring of despotic government. Does your government, then, resemble a despotism? Yes, as the sword which glitters in the hands of liberty's heroes resembles the one with which tyranny's lackeys are armed. Let the despot govern his brutalized subjects by terror; he is right to do this, as a despot. Subdue liberty's enemies by terror, and you will be right, as founders of the Republic. The government of the revolution is the despotism of liberty against tyranny. Is force made only to protect crime? And is it not to strike the heads of the proud that lightning is destined? To punish the oppressors of humanity is clemency; to pardon them is barbarity. The rigor of tyrants has only rigor for a principle; the rigor of the republican government comes from charity. - Maximilen Robespierre

That our honorable teacher couldn't see fit to at learn to pronounce Robespierre correctly is sadly telling. Don't lecture about it, if you aren't going to pronounce their names well. Phooey! Stop doing this stuff, and start do things you really care about! Sheesh!
