When Elizabeth I died without an heir in 1603, the English throne passed to James VI of Scotland, who reigned in England as James I. As monarch, James attempted to introduce absolute monarchy to England, but encountered a great deal of resistance from Parliament and dissident Calvinist Protestants. James enforced religious uniformity, demanding that all of his subjects be in good standing with the Anglican Church. Both the Puritans, who sought to "purity" the Church of England, and the Separatists, who sought to separate from the Church of England, found themselves frustrated with these religious policies. While some of these dissident Protestants left England during James' reign to start colonies in North America, many remained and resisted James' policies and would continue their resistance into the reign of his son, Charles I.
This is the first part of my four part lecture on the Stuarts, the English Civil War, and the Glorious Revolution.

Below is an expanding and (roughly) chronological list of links to European history videos (generally these feature lecturers who summarize material well and deliver it in an engaging way, such as Tom Richey and Paul Sargent, or great animators featuring maps that illustrate the passage of events geographically). The units correspond to those of AP EURO (see link all the way at the end). A few videos on a 'Crown and Church estates' series from Marty Rady (of University College London) are sprinkled in, which feature the importance of Central Europe, an area that is generally not covered sufficiently in most introductory courses. While most of these materials are appropriate for AP Euro students, undergraduates, particularly those who want a refresher before taking more advanced courses, and life-long learners may also benefit from them. These materials compare quite favorably with 'massive open online courses' (MOOCs), and often are better, IMHO. Combined with a reading of some primary sources (many now easily available online in translation) and viewings of art from the eras covered (many great works can be viewed in high-resolution online), one can acquire a fairly good understanding of the last 500 years or so of European history in a relatively short period. Anything comparable would simply not have been possible for most people 20 years ago, and probably not even 10 years ago. Kudos to the content providers! A lot of the American high school students who are taking year-long courses in modern European history will probably find this a bit late but still good for review when it comes exam time. As a professor of History I love these lecture. However, it really reinforces the major problem with high school History in general. Having students memorize a bunch of names and dates is not teaching them to think and it's not teaching them analysis. It just puts undue pressure on them and once they take the test none of this stuff matters anymore. I am grateful that videos like this exist though because I can see that there are teachers out there trying to make it interesting despite the confined format they have to work within.

We need to bring back the Whig party "Whig" was originally short for "whiggamor", a term meaning "cattle driver" used to describe western Scots who came to Leith for corn. In the reign of Charles I the term was used during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms to refer derisively to a radical faction of the Scottish Covenanters who called themselves the "Kirk Party" (see the Whiggamore Raid). It was then applied to Scottish Presbyterian rebels who were against the King's Episcopalian order in Scotland.[5] The term "Whig" entered English political discourse during the Exclusion Bill crisis of 1678-1681 when there was controversy about whether or not King Charles II's brother, James, should be allowed to succeed to the throne on Charles's death. "Whig" was a term of abuse applied to those who wanted to exclude James on the grounds that he was a Roman Catholic we need to bring back Whigs and CLassic Liberalism (not to be confused with modern day liberals(who are just a bunch of whiny babies))

8:55 - I feel I should point out that whilst James wanted one conformist religion he was relatively tolerant of other groups and appointed both Puritan and Anti-Puritan Archbishops of Canterbury in order to placate both sides of the church and even appointed Armenians - furthermore he was known to insult both Puritan and Preyer book Protestants and had religious beliefs that whilst more hierarchical than most didn't fit into one particular category. He was even very tolerant of Catholics saying that he wouldn't hurt a mans body for what he privately thought in his mind (he only executed about 16 Catholic priests in his whole rein) which Is a 6th of Elizabeths tally in a similar timeframe. I'm being a bit picky though as this is an excellent series.

This is the second lecture by this great teacher that I've come across. As a Canadian, my first impression is that his accent is so not what one would expect from a presenter of this subject matter! No insult, this is meant in humour, but consider starting a channel and a personality called " History From A Hick". Think about it - I think it would take off like crazy. It would be a very funny, yet effective way to bring knowledge to a resistant group... you know, the Joe The Plumber crowd.

James wasn't adamant about the state religion he took a "via media" similar to Elizabeth. The Hampton court conference and his want to cause peace with Spain and the fact that he loved the Howard faction (who were Catholics) showed he wasn't against them. It was moreso parliament who hates the Catholics after the 18 yr war with Spain

James I was careful not to push his theories too far. So he negotiated with Parliament on the abolition of certain feudal rights (such as monopolies and "purveyance" (requisition at prices decided by the king) , in return for a grant. The talks broke down and James called off the talks. He was also careful not to push the Scottish Church too far on the question of bishops, following a backlash as king of Scotland after Parliament passed the "Black Acts" bringing the Presbyterian church theoretically under royal control (he had to back down on that too I think in the 1580s). He wasnt a fan of William Laud, probably realising he was too polarising to make a bishop (unlike Charles I).

Growing up Christian, I've always asked why people preferred the King James version of the Bible when they could get closer to the source material with other versions. It's fascinating to know this all happened under that King James fellow. Especially the founding of Jamestown.

James's belief in the Divine right of Kings is totally at odds with Scottish tradition. In Scotland Sovereignty rests with the people and the Monarch was the first among equals. If the monarch failed to carry out his duties properly he could be removed and replaced with another member of the Royal House.
@kickedinthecalfbyacow7549

That’s not really true, the idea of the divine right of kings arrived in England with James.
@charmainelamont2020
@charmainelamont2020 3 жыл бұрын
@@kickedinthecalfbyacow7549 It may very well have, but it was most certainly not the Scots way. James' own tutor, George Buchanan, Scotland’s greatest political writer of the period, continually argued with him about his obsession with the divine right nonsense. He reminded the King that: ‘When our king’s are publicly inaugurated, they give a solemn promise to the entire people that they will observe the laws, customs and ancient practices of our ancestors" Scottish kings were also subject to the authority of the law, a law they could not circumvent. Sovereignty therefore resided with the people not the Crown. Thus the coronation oath was a contract between king and people’ where the loyalty of the latter was exchanged for the just rule of the former. Arbitrary rulers could be removed and in extreme cases even killed. Whereever James got the divine right of Kings from, it wasn't from Scotland.

The only objection I have to this video is that baptism thing. The Bible makes it clear the Greek word βάπτισμα (translated as plunging or dipping) wasn't always used literally (see Mark 10:38-39; Luke 12:50; Matthew 3:11; Luke 3:16; 1 Corinthians 10:2) Secondly, Baptism in the Bible was done by sprinkling or pouring not by immersion (see Ezekiel 36:25-26; Psalm 77:16-20; Mark 7:4; Acts 2:41; Acts 16:33; 1 Corinthians 10:2; Hebrews 9:10, 19-22).

The king becomes basically the Pope. This is of the Anglican church and it is basically Catholicism without the Roman Pope. The king or whatever monarch is God's appointed representative on Earth the same as the Pope. My grandmother used to call Catholics papists and she sort of spat it out when she said it. My other grandmother was Catholic but not allowed to practice by her husband so she started going to a small Protestant Congregational Church which I ended up growing up in just like my mother did. Episcopalian in the United States is the Anglican Church in America.

One thing for Sure King James 1 knew God well, you only have to read the basilica doron to see he gives glory to God first, as the Bible teaches, he was telling his sons, Gods word first, he told them God was the earthly spring and moover of all earthly things, It’s a bit amusing hearing athiests try and explain God , when the Bible tells you over and over again , it is written in parables, You need to be seeking God with your heart mind and soul genuinely, reading the Bible continually ( as King James tells his sons in the Basilica doron) and be doing your utmost to do his commandments, hoping he will come in spirit ( earnest of the word) Otherwise you may be curious like Juda why Jesus doesn’t reveal himself to those who are in the world!!!!!!!! John 14:22 “Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?” Here’s a clue, because they don’t do what Jesus commanded, ( King James knew 1 Timothy 6:3 well”) 1 Peter 2:21 “For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:” John 13:34 “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.” Matthew 18:3 “And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.” 1 Corinthians 14:20 “Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.” Romans 12:14 “Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not.” Romans 12:17 “Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.” Romans 12:19 “Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.” 1 Thessalonians 5:15 “See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.” 1 Peter 3:9 “Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing.” Matthew 5:39 “But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.” 1 John 2:6 “He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.” Luke 6:28 “Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.” Matthew 5:44 “But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;” James 5:10 “Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience.” 1 Timothy 6:3 “If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;” And you need to believe all things as 1 Corinthians13 tells you, money has nothing to do with believing, if you don’t believe God made us male and female “ at the beginning “ you are not believing all things, subscribe to “ creation Research “ KZbin channel, see for yourself how absurd evolution theory is, and why James never gave into the Catholic, Presbyterians, anglicans, puritans, separatists who didn’t follow Gods words,, his son Charles 1 did weaken and make deals with such men, he got beheaded? Colossians 2:8 “Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.” 2 Timothy 2:15 “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” Exodus 20:11 “For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.” Mark 10:6 “But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female.” Matthew 19:4 “And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,” Genesis 2:7 “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” 1 Corinthians 15:39 “All flesh is not the same flesh: but there is one kind of flesh of men, another flesh of beasts, another of fishes, and another of birds.”

13:33 Disappointed to hear the racist comment regarding students dressing up as "Indians". It is never ok for a non-Indigenous person to "dress-up" and wear someone else's culture as a "costume". The way this racist practice is casually mentioned in your lecture and not named as racist (and as a violent, continued act of colonization) makes me believe that this is not in your present understanding. Your comment makes it unsafe to be present in that room as an Indigenous person, or watching this video as an Indigenous person. As a history scholar, you need to do better. Dressing up as "Indian" contributes to the problematic and false narrative that Indigenous peoples no longer exist in the present. This is wrong and disrespectful and an act of erasure.
