"On Quantic Dream, David Cage, and The Uncanny Valley" is an amazing concept for a video essay. David Cage's vision for Quantic Dream always involved hyper-realistic digital actors, and I believe Quantic Dream's games have actually been used as examples of the uncanny valley effect in the past.
Remember the loading screens in Heavy Rain? Extreme closeups of each playable character's idle facial animation. I was super impressed at the time, but they probably haven't aged well.

Wow, “On Quantic Dream, David Cage, and Uncanny Valley”, is actually a quite coherent and relevant video subject. For those that don’t know, David Cage is the director of Quantic Dream. They are the game studio behind games like Indigo Prophecy, Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls, and Detroit: Become Human. The main technical achievement of these games is the use of real actors and motion capture technology to provide highly realistic character body and facial animations for the characters in the game. However, because the technology is still not perfect (especially in recreating realistic lip and eye movement), games made with this technology are notoriously known for creating imagery that falls in the “Uncanny Valley” which is the point just BEFORE a recreation of reality (in art or animation usually) becomes indistinguishable from reality itself by our minds. The human characters in their later games look REALLY real, but… just not perfect. And since our brains have gone through hundreds of thousands of years of evolution in recognizing human faces and movement, our brains still detect that the digital recreations are not really human, and thus it makes us feel creeped out. That’s why “Uncanny Valley” usually refers to something creepy and human like, like dolls or animatronics. I would absolutely what a whole video about this!
@kingdom55003 жыл бұрын
@@sudanemamimikiki1527 of course today's productions will look outdated in just a few years, but that is entirely a consequence of chasing after photo-realism and other advancements in techniques and technology. these productions that fall in the uncanny valley are just intermediate steps between the low-poly of the past and the photo-realism of the future.
