Great advice Tom, very helpful for someone starting out! I think #8 is a must. Wire-strippers are ideal for clean and neat wiring.

Great advice. I would add, buy the best quality tools you can afford. Over the long run it will pay off. I have bought many cheap tools. Almost always regret it.

Tom, You need a small phililps screw driver if you are screwing down your track and things. An awl or some pointed tool for sliding over those stubborn rail joiners. A pair of pliers for grabbing flex rail and sliding it thru the ties. A knife of some sort for cutting members to allow rail joiners to slid by. I like a craft knife with a no. 7 blade. Tips - 1.) Join all sections of flex with metal rail joiners, solder them and add the drop feeders before installing along backdrops. Impossible to reach after the track is down. 2.) Use rubber sheet 1/8 inch thick as sub roadbed under the track. Tack down with locktite foam adhesive. Makes a super strong film. Place track on top. Spike down with nails, etc. the foam film will grab like the devel. Allows you to pull the track up later without destroying it. note - -do NOT solder these flex sections - put drop feeders on every section! Split the rubber down the center - -goes around curves like butter - much better than cork. Rubber is black - looks great under the track. Ballast the outside edges if you like. bob

Rail Nipper is available at Amazon or Micro Mark. Amazingly Amazon is less expensive. www.amazon.com/Micro-Mark-Rail-Nipper-Track-Cutter/dp/B06XH5SP7B

I would have split the top 10 into a top 10 hardware tools/woodworking tools, a top 10 electrical tools, and maybe a top 10 general tools. Other than that I like your top 10 tools list!

Good idea. Here's your chance!

@@TomsTrainsandThings Hi Tom, here are my thoughts (very similar to yours): Woodworking/General: 1. Bench; 2. Power Saw (Jig/Circular/Miter/Table); 3. Power Drill Driver and bits; 4. Measuring Tape/Device; 5. Square; 6. Level; 7. Clamps, Clamps, and more Clamps; 8. Glue/Wood Glue; 9. Screws/Fasteners; 10. Vacuum Cleaner/broom and dust pan Electrical: 1. Bench (the dining room table not a good place); 2. Wire Cutters; 3. Wire Strippers; 4. Multimeter; 5. Soldering Iron and Tips; 6. Desoldering Braid or Solder Sucker; 7. wire and electrical/electronic components; 8. Solderless Breadboard; 9. Resistor/Capacitor Substitution Boxes; 10. Flux (more of a nice to have) Then I would do a top ten on scenery, but I am just starting out and other than brushes and paint I'm still figuring it out.

You forgot about the trusty pencil! And then you need a pencil sharpener. And maybe an eraser. I don’t need one because I don’t make mistakes. And you’ll need something to hold your pencil. Great video Tom. I think I have 9 of the 10 items you mentioned. -Mark
