I first heard this song nearly 50 years ago, first I heard of Tom Waits. All that time, all that has changed, and the song still stirs my soul. I have never tired of this, nor everything Tom has done since. God bless, Mr. Waits.

Eastern Washington, in the scablands, a hot, got summer night. Coming out of a small farm town tavern. My friend and I are in the lotz drinking bottles of tavern Oly, the good kroesened beer. It's ice cold, the temperature is at 114. We get in his orange 70 Cuda and head for Cooley City. Master of Sparks is in the tape deck. Life was better then! I'm 74 now and have some fine memories. We listened to Waits then too. Saw him in the Paranomount in Seattle back then. A superb show! Thanks Tom!

Such a great song. The words blend so well together. It transports me to the places in the big cities that I used to visit, the darker, seedier parts of those cities so long ago. And then finding a sort of redemption because of a certain lady that you meet. A lady who literally rescues your soul. You weren't looking for love love at the time, but there it is. And through an act of magic, she loves you also. Oh, to be so blessed. To find the love of your life in that moment. But now as you fast forward through time, it is taken away from you. Your heart.
