TOMY Sonic Collector Series Comic Pack Figure REVIEW - Sonic & Knuckles!

The TOMY Sonic the Hedgehog line has been around for nearly 3 years at this point. Over those years, they've had countless releases, however, up until now none of those releases were based off of the Modern design of Sonic.
That all changes this year, as TOMY has announced their "Sonic Collector Series" line of figures and plushes, a line that contains both Classic and Modern Sonic. After several delays, their first Modern figure releases are here, and in this video, I take a look at the start of TOMY Modern Sonic, reviewing the Sonic & Knuckles Comic Packs! I also delve into the current state of Sonic merchandise, the end of Archie Sonic, and more!

I really hope that Patmac comes back to video creation. I would love to hear his opinion on the modern state of Sonic. Especially how Tomy was unfortunately dropped as a partner and Jakks took their stead. I will forever miss Jazwares sonic figures. I have fond memories with them, I had the sonic and blaze comic pack back in spring 2013 and in that December I lost sonic in the ocean as I was in a hot beach down south with my figure. Every time I think of sonic figures I'm always drawled back to that toy and my new sonic figure (free riders glued on with sonics normal shoes and gloves) sucks ass back in 2014, hell his head fell off but it was still jazwares, now I have to get these new figures but I know it's not like the ones I already have, sonics legs look weird on his hips, but I mostly want those comics before it's truly too late.

fun fact: if you didn't know,TOMY has actually started making sonic merch around in the 90s,the time when sonic was cool and more popular. they mostly made these little sonic figures that did not move.

19:51 - I know this is an old video, but retrospectively, I have to disagree. Articulation IS everything, if done right. The designs can or cannot be toy friendly. Just because it "looks" good, does not mean it's any better. Sonic designs are meant to be dynamic in different poses. While yes, I agree that they have a certain flow to their design, but their designs are meant to be dynamic and action oriented. Neutral poses are fine, but that's about it; they're just standing there. Utilizing with less joints are okay, but sometimes they look weird, awkward and stiff. In terms of accuracy; a saying goes from some collectors, "Just because you're accurate does not mean you're interesting".

I agree and looking back these figures are very bare compared to what we have now. I really loved this line and time period but I don't think these 3" figures will be remembered too well as they didn't end up releasing many characters nor can they do much. Everything you said is correct about general action figure design. As a toy it is important to make sure you can actually have the most fun with a toy while maintaining the design accuracy.

Man, it feels like a missed opportunity that these packs didn't include a classic main cast member + Freedom Fighter character. They went to all the trouble of tooling of new figures (The Modern ones at least), so why not go the extra mile and make a exclusive character? Anyways, fantastic review! Love the detailed shots and commentary. (On a side note, I'd totally buy these if they were $5 cheaper. I wish they had thought out the price-point a bit more...maybe drop the fancy box packaging? Hasbro's Star Wars comic packs were cheap, and they had were on small blister cards.)

I think the reason they cut down on the articulation for the modern figures is because they knew more kids would want to buy modern figures, since that's the Sonic they've seen the most of from recent games in the main series. Less articulation means less complexity. The more articulation there is, it makes it easier for a figure to fall down, especially on the legs. I know this is the collector's series, but a lot of kids will still want modern characters. Classic Sonic on the other hand, appeals a bit more to older collectors, so it has more articulation.

I just got the Sonic pack today, and the classic was more like the anniversary release. The extra paint behind his mussel isn't there, the paint doesn't look muddy, and you can't see the seam lines on his head, although it most likely is there. Oh, and it still came with the Archie comic, even almost 2 years after it's release and the cancellation of Archie Sonic.

-Most likely pointless update- At the time I'm watching this video (December 2019), I can personally confirm a Modern Knuckles Tomy plush and a Classic Sonic Tomy plush. They both look very nice and I plan on heading back to Best Buy specifically for the Knuckles plush. I may get Classic Sonic as well, but the Knuckles plush seems different enough from previous ones for me to really want.
