Of the almost uncountable musical pieces that Ton Koopman has conducted, played or participated in, IMO this short, lovely and utterlly charming Cristmas Concerto Grosso by the immortal Arcangelo Corelli has got to be among the best. Many thanks to Orquesta Sinfónica Galicia for sharing it with us.

At first I was terrified when I saw such a large orchestra, but Koopman and friends are able to keep this intimate. The piece itself is a little miracle, of course.
@elaineblackhurst15094 жыл бұрын
It’s a good point you make about the size of the orchestra. However, there is a large amount of contemporary evidence that shows that in Rome, Corelli played these concertos usually with an orchestra of between 30 and 40, and on special occasions, up to 80. We almost always hear these works played today by very small authentic/original instrument specialist orchestras, but the truth is, Corelli actually intended them for rather larger forces. If you want to hear a large-scale version of these works, rather than the normal chamber size performance, there is a fine recording of the complete Opus 6 by Ensemble 415, directed by Chiara Banchini and Jesper Christensen - the accompanying booklet is very interesting too - it is well worth searching out for a new insight into these magnificent concerti grossi. That said, I’m not keen on the additional winds - as found in Handel’s Opus 6 sometimes - added in this performance; the additional parts are unnecessary, and Corelli’s writing is idiomatic string writing by a composer who was himself a very fine violinist.

I enjoyed a lot this. I learn with surprise that Corelli used to play his concertos with larger orchesters as it is usual in our times. Koopman has been able to kerep all the things going OK, nevertheless I had the impression that the spirit of the concerrtino is absolutely lost, inmerged on the general sound of the ripieno. I fear I prefer the restricted mood.

Buon Giorno
