My gosh this is a glorious organ, though pretty much out of the public eye. It was my pleasure to spend a week there some years back enjoying the fantastic organ and acoustics. A tribute to Bach, Hildebrandt, and finally to Madame Greulich whose tireless efforts to have it restored allowed us to hear these incredible sounds today.

'Ole Audiophile 50 years in with info: I'm new to the pipe organ world. Audiophile's have a tendency to gather gear knowledge, it's what we do. Europe is submerged in aged organs. Many have been refurbished over the centuries three or more times, I've witnessed the signature faceplates. Most are simply one of a kind at this point in their storied careers. But hope abounds, because competent builders still exist in this world. Third best I'll offer is a new Marcussen. They seem to be centered around Manchester for some reason. 2nd best would be an Austrian made Reiger. Like a fine sculpture, these organs are pure artform. The best sounding & looking organs of today seem to be centered around Poland, where most of them reside. They are called Zych. Look for them in videos, they are absolutely stunning. Thanx.

Are there orchestral pieces in which the organ comes in immediately at the start of the piece? I imagine there must be. But if that's so then I'm curious about how the organist knows when to come in if he or she can't see the conductor or the rest of the orchestra.

As an organist, I could never play the organ at St Thomas, even if I was allowed. Just thinking about it makes me shake, even though it's not the same organ that Bach used. Anyone but Bach playing there seems like one is polluting it's karma. lol

for 3 seconds we get an underview-glimpse of half the organ, 6:34, and a fleeting run along the prospect. we never see the church proper, its size, the placement of the organ, her relation to the room, but we get the important man arriving at the hotel-reception. very baroque...

there may be an obvious answer to this question that I can't think of, but if we have organs that are still in use since Bach's day, why is bach's system of intonation such a mystery? A clavier going out of tune I can understand, but an organ--if it's properly cared for? Wouldn't we still have the measurements for the pipes?
@titorosado6198
@titorosado6198 3 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, organs also go out of tune. To conplicate matters even more, the tuning preferences varied through the course of history. Because of this two things, the original tuning of 18th century organs didn't survive (to my knowledge) until today. I hope this was helpful :) (sorry if what I wrote is confusing, English isn't my first language)
@alistairkirk3264
@alistairkirk3264 3 жыл бұрын
@@titorosado6198 Your English was great! Yes, the vast majority of these organs were re-tuned to equal temperament in the 19th and 20th centuries, sometimes even by cutting the pipes - so not only is the tuning damaged, but the sound too!

I was astonished to hear so much extra sound and noise from each key in this film with the phantastic Ton Koopman! When you sit and play on this organ ( I once had the chance) you don't hear any other sounds from keys or parts of the mechanics. Perhaps the noise sound we hear in this Video was recorded by an extra mic and was later mixed with the sound of the stops?
