The Rules for this Campaign are:
- Dead is dead. When I die, the campaign ends.
- Full realism settings. Only the external camera is allowed for filming purposes
- Manual Targeting
- No recognition manual for random merchant ships
- Attempt to abide by the historical orders in regards to the London Naval Treaty, Operating Procedures and Restrictions

I remember reading Adm. Daniel Gallery's account of capturing U-505. When he captured the U-boat he also captured the log book, so he was able to piece together what the U-boat had been going through. U-505 was also on a patrol around Freetown and it was also constantly forced to dive due to aircraft. U-505 was having to spend so much time submerged that battery power was becoming a real issue as every time he tried to surface to recharge they'd sight a plane and be forced to dive again. But, the thing was, Gallery was able to work out that the U-boat had been under the main air corridor between S. America and Africa. By the point in the war when U-505 was patrolling in the area, there would have been near constant air traffic overhead as planes transited from the US to Europe via that route. Almost none of them would have posed any sort of threat to the U-boat, but as the U-boat had no way of knowing that, they had to act as though the aircraft were a threat. I realize that's not the same sort of situation you were encountering near Freetown, but I thought it was an interesting story just the same.

Both of those Subs were only put in to service in 1942 and considering the allies had radar and had ramped up the search capabilities of aircraft in 1942 the kind of harassment and precision Tonci is seeing would be understandable 18 months later. Aircraft finding Uboats with pinpoint accuracy in early 1941 and late 1940(my own experience near Freetown) consistently at night time is not right at all for the time period. Here is a quote regarding the RAF buildup in Freetown which together with the US didn't really ramp up till 1942 either but also goes to show that it's not like RAF had the kind of numbers Tonci is dealing with now. "Coastal Command West Africe WWII On 15th January 1941 No. 210 Squadron was ordered to leave OBAN and send three of its Sunderlands to Freetown to form No.95 Squadron With W/Com. FJ Fressanges as its C/O and Sqn/Ldr Lombard as Flight Commander, the Squadron began to arrive at its base in Freetown, Sierra Leone in March to start anti-submarine patrols and reconnaissance over the South Atlantic."

No airbase during the war would have been able to send out more aircraft than they were equipped with. To get aircraft out to you that quickly means they have to have spotted you many hundreds of kilometres outside detection range without airborne radar (which was not available yet), get them back 2 hours before they could possibly get back, rearm, refuel, service and get them airborne again continuously for days or weeks 24 hours a day 7 days a week. There were NO aircraft in existance that could do that. It's a lot more than just a bug. It's a major programming error.

They say that war is 90% boredom and 10% terror.. this patrol captures a real aspect of war .. no targets, diving to avoid enemy aircraft this was even shown in Das Boot (I know later in the war but still) ... I love it. I would also love it if you spoke German to the crew while still speaking English to us out here in internet land.. Ok theres something wrong with me, I'll get my coat ...

I still think you should adjust your settings to make the air patrols less frequent or whatever. It's a total cheat what the game is doing to you at this rate. Plus, if you're gonna go weeks on end on patrol super far away, not hit anything and be under a super unrealistic amount of air cover while doing so, you might as well take a Type IX xD

When you start to 'loiter' well off Gibralter, or when crossing the Bay of Biscay, have you considered daytime, on the surface, engines on slow, decks awash, and full recharge? My thinking is that what enemy aircraft spot is three things, a submarine's silhouette, a wake and motion. Motion really catches the eye, particularly when there is also a silhouette and a wake trailing behind. My idea is that if you are nothing more than a conning tower, and just crawling along, there is very little to draw the attention of the crew of an enemy airplane off in the distance. Also, on diesel engines, even if slow, you can go to flank speed immediately, order crash dive, and with the decks awash, disappear very quickly. Even more interesting, if you were to see some aircraft in the distance, you could switch to electric engines, still on slow, and see if you are spotted. If not spotted, go back to diesel engines and continue to charge. However, now that you are on electric engines, If the aircraft turn towards you, then go to flank, and you will not have the delay to switch to electric engines that always holds up your crash dives. And too, with your decks awash, you will be under very rapidly anyway. Low on fuel, your journey to port will be slow anyway, get some fresh air during the day and maybe try some new ideas out? Just some thoughts to try. Enjoying the series.

indeed, i have to wonder how many saves he has for each patrol, i'd rather get sunk by a ghost destroyer when running at x2048 than risk my save corrupting when i have to quit for the day

@@alwinlowdham2670 vanilla runs as fast as 8024 but most mods limit it to lower because of stability. if you have sh3 commander you can change it back in options

The ability modifier you mentioned indeed confirms that it is (at least in my mind) an error. The 0.34 to .7 is already over 50% , but to 3.0!!! That is more like a logarithmic jump haha. Would definitely peg that down to 0,9 like you mentioned, or 1,0 at the very most
