My Mesa Boogie is a great example for an awesome Mark Series amp. It's tricky to set up and you need to be aware of a few things. But once you nailed it... oh my god is it good. HAHA
In this video I'm showing its secrets and tell the brief history of the Mark Series.
Have fun! :)

Unbelievable demo. And I am trying to not talk about the amp, although you made it sound amazing. I am talking about the incredible range of tones you threw in and time you took to research and articulate such an informative history lesson. It is unbelievable when seeing how many other products you are reviewing on you channel. This was my first to watch and I subscribed immediately. Thanks!

Thanks for the walkthrough, I’ve had the blue stripe coliseum since the early 90’s and recently had it brought back to life by changing out all of the capacitors and of course re-tubing. It’s such a beast around the house,I can barely get the volume to 2 without driving the my family members or neighbors crazy.

Absolutely fantastic video Kris. The Boogie MkIII is such an underrated amp. You really got some of the best tones I've heard from one. They are so tricky to dial in, you really need to spend time with one. When dialed in right they sound amazing , but when dialed in wrong they can cut your head off. The really great thing is the way these amps sit in a mix. The mids are so right. Thanks for this

Got great chops! I also like in this video how you explain then demonstrate this particular amp's features. Many guitar players can easily find fault in many of the various makes and models of tube amps from Marshall Orange Peavey Blackstar etc but I think all might agree that there's virtually nothing to complain about with any Mesa Boogie amp, everybody seems to love them; quality reliability and most of all tone it's all there! I'm also happy that the folks at Mesa have been building their all tube amps in the USA since they first opened for business and have not (yet) ventured into the Solid state arena or, even worse, moved production to some far east manufacturers!

Killer tones, Kris! That clean channel is to die for! And the rhythm and lead channels sound so good! I’ve only played a Mark III once but it sounded great! I have owned multiple C+’s (which are my favorite Boogie) as well as Mark IV’s/Triaxis/Lonestar/2 channel Recto’s etc. all the way up to my JP2C Limited Edition which is my main amp. I may have to snag a Mark III later down the line!

Excellent, Kris. 👏👏 I've had my mk3 purple stripe 60/100 in exotic hardwood since late 1980's. Brilliant product. Changed my speaker to a crlestion g12 early on to give a warmer and not so harsh sound. I find them a bit directional, so just bought a 1 x12 boogie extension cab to put elsewhere and spread the sound around!

Kris... dude, you videos are getting so good. I might be biased about this one, I have a Mk. 5 and absolutely love it. I always keep looking for something that would replace it but at this point, I can’t find anything, so I’m a Boogie lover through and through. Loved watching you on Thomann and was so excited when you started your own channel. The videos are better each time you release and you are such a legend now. I’ll stop gushing the love on you, but that intro song was my favorite thing you’ve done. So very cool and the riff was just badass. Been here since the beginning and you are getting so epic. Sorry if I sound like a kiss ass but you are the one new channel I have as must watch.

I also have a MkV and a blue stripe MkV and have set them side by side and painstakingly got the V to match the blue stripe MKIII, the MkV overall tighter and the MkIII still naturally looser. So I use the MkV for tight rhythms and use the MKIII for a more fluid lead tone. The V sounds more modern to be sure, but the III has a wee bit more soul.
@KrisBarocsi
@KrisBarocsi 4 жыл бұрын
David Tesch That’s exactly my experience too. I compared my Mark III with John Petrucci’s JP-2C when he came for an interview to Thomann. The JP-2C is tighter and heavier but since I don’t only play heavy with my Mark, I preferred my a little more. It’s a matter of taste and style.

My uncle had ordered this particular amp back when it came out in 1988. I remember him telling me he had previously owned a Marshall JMP 2203 and a Laney AOR head ,that he used to A-B switch for channels, which ran into two Carvin 4x12s. He sold both heads PLUS cash to buy this amp ( arguable decision depending on who you talk to). Other than buying a Peavey 5150 head around 1996 ( which he eventually sold to me and I ended up selling to a friend) it was his primary amp until his death in 2010. Ive always been a Marshall guy myself and i am hopelessly devoted to that particular sound, but having the fortune of playing this amp from him; I can definitely see the love affair people have with Mesa Boogie. Its an entirely different beast from a Marshall and as the years go on, i REALLY like that tone from them

Some excellent playing in this. I've got a mk iii purple stripe combo and it does show its age a bit, it can be a bit noisy and crackly despite services and maintenance. It weighs a ton, is as loud as holy hell but if you can find that sweet spot it is brilliant. Agree with poster though, switching channels, especially when gigging and in the middle of a song can leave you a bit in no-man's land.

Great vid! I own two MKIII's - purple stripe short and blue long heads. Definately some of the best amps for hi-gain I played in my life, very rich in harmonics and the overall sound. Very overlooked also (and for good, cause you still can buy them not for the price of 2C+, lol). Btw, the purple one is very sensitive to middle knob which adds sort of flubbyness on the lead channel which can be cool at times. The blue one is really bright but that's not a bad thing at all though. They both slay. Searching for the green and red ones, heh. \ш/

When I was 16 (in the late ‘90’s) I had a 60 watt non simul-class Mark III with out the graphic EQ. I never made friends with it like I wanted, but I was also very stuck in a vintage SRV/Hendrix mindset at the time. This video makes me wonder how I’d feel about today knowing how my taste and approach to dialing in amps has changed!

I own a very early "wood & wicker" 1985 No-Stripe Mark III. It has the "105" Mark IIC+ power transformer and an '85 200W EVM 12L. Mike B. at Mesa/Boogie applied / added these mods: "+" mode, "Rhythm 2 volume pot", triode / pentode switch. Of course it has reverb, presence, and the GEQ. I also had the fan replaced with a quieter fan and a resistor in series to lower its speed, so the amp is rather quiet. This is a very fine and formidable amp.

@davidtesch475
@davidtesch475 4 жыл бұрын
I love my blue stripe long head. They definitely take a while to learn, I dial mine even more aggressive than you have, I will go ahead and share that for others reading this.... first off knowing the manual well helps a ton... definitely have your volume pulled usually at 7, Treble pulled at 7, mid at straight up 5 pulled, bass at 2 and you CAN pull it depending on your pickups and how loud you are playing... the pull deep definitely adds Mesa warmth, I also drive mine harder and keep the master back down a bit, the master is extremely powerful and I prefer controlling volume from the lead master. I definitely add more presence than this, even to 6-7, because I want this to hurt and I like that wild Satriani/Vai whip of fire thing...... Also Kris set his EQ to the prototypical Petrucci setting which I'm not a fan off even on my MKV, most guys who ran these prefer the more traditional V setting and I do as well. His tone here is a tad bit midrangey and you can definitely go deeper and heavier to get that "Metallica" tone that everybody bugs about. I myself enjoy a Satriani-ish tone and my settings in class A sounds like a Marshall and a Fender had a wicked love child that is the black sheep of the family... Side note, I also have a Mark V and have set them side by side and painstakingly got the V to match the tones I always enjoyed from the blue stripe MKIII, but the MkV is just overall tighter and the MkIII still naturally looser. So I have settled in on using the MkV for tight rhythms and using the MKIII for fluid lead tone.

Are you using the lead channel with these settings, that sounds pretty piercingly bright. I believe the pull shift on the bass is only for the rhythm channel(s). Also he has the GEQ pretty extreme here, much more so than Metallica did back in the day, but they had a large amount of additional EQ scooping mids and boosting highs and lows both in the loop, and through the board post micing. I personally am not a fan of cranking the 80hz and 6600hz and dropping the 750 to the bottom as that's just too extreme, and if going for Metallica just doesn't sound like it anyways. The settings I've been rocking are Vol-6, treble-7 pulled, bass-2, mid-6, master-4 pulled, drive-7 pulled, lead master-5, presence-2. GEQ: 80 center, 240 up a hair, 750 a hair above the bottom line, 2200 between the bottom and middle line, 6600 center. Cab being a blend of G12T75 and V30s. I boost with a 808 drive at 0, level at max. Perfect for 80s hair, virtuoso leads, up to modern metal but not as much low to low mid chunk as say a recto or 5150. This is a green stripe, so it may be tighter and more compressed than a blue stripe (never tried a blue).

Holy sh*t, that's some serious guitar tones... Best ones I've heard in a while, congratulations ! Maybe a dumb question but : Vintage Mark Series boogies are known to be awesome, but what about the current mark V ? Do you think it stands the comparison ? :o

The Mark V has a lot of improved features and is def. worth getting. Definitely in the top 3 best sounding amps in it's price range.

I think the V is a great amp in its own right. May not sound the same as a I, IIC+, III, or IV, but I wouldn't want it to. Far more options, amazing cleans, crunchy rhythms, searing leads, independent controls,... I would never sell my III as for high gain it's just menacing (for recording with different settings the clean is beautiful and chime-y as well, think Welcome Home - Sanitarium), but I would love to have a V along side it. They each do things the other doesn't.

I have a Mark III blue stripe and a Mark V and I must say they are fairly different beasts. Both sound amazing and both definitely live up to the legacy of the mark series boogies, but they don't sound the same. I honestly think the III sounds a bit heavier and nastier than the V and I actually prefer the III for metal tones. But the V has way more independence in its controls and is ridiculously versatile. Both are definitely worth getting imo.

I owned the mark v 90 first. Years later I got my mark iii blue stripe combo. Now I'm keeping both. They are both mark but they are so different from each other. Mark v is super tight, clean and modern while mark iii is warm and 80s sounding. Many people think mark iii = scooped Metallica tone. Actually, it can do a lot more. From mark iv type dream theatre & lamb of god riffs to vintage bluesy overdrive. Playing mark iii with a tad of overdrive and a boutique guitar is such a delight! All you really need is to dial it right! Reading Doug West's detailed mark v manual is a good way to get you started.

Congrats on both beauties, these are very different sounding indeed! You’re right, the scooped early Metallica sound is far from being the „normal“ tone of the IIIs and IVs. You really have to pull out the mids on the graphic EQ to get there. 😅 Cheers!

Metallica used a 2c++ & later went to 4 on AJFA & the Black Album. It’s all the same lineage. They lost the separate drive on the 5 but it has enough gain to make it not matter. They’re all going to have fairly similar “in the ballpark” sound characteristics.

Hi Kris, what a great tone I didn't expected I could get with this amp. Because I have the same amp, excepted it's a green strip. I use the same settings (Indeed, the EQ can be tricky!). My tone is noticeable way better for sure. But, it's fizzy on lead channel... Presence is set to 0! Still fizzy. What kind of tube do you have in pre-amp? I changed mine a year ago with JJ's, thinking to switch V1 or all the pre-amp for some Mullard (they seem smoother) or I might go for a set of original Mesa. I am a bit clueless. Danke noch, das sind eine menge wertvolle Hinweise! Gruß

Yeah, there are amps that work with certain types of guitars better. I love the Mark mostly with P90s and humbuckers. Less with strats and teles, unless you set the clean channel to a nice american clean and use pedals for gain. That's magic too, the amp takes pedal drive very well too.
