I've got a '58 Junior heavy relic from the Murphy Lab and it's nothing short of incredible. I'm a long time Strat guy, but the Junior has taken over my life. The tone and playability are outstanding. But the relic work... it's nothing short of art. Great interview. Thanks guys!!!

I'm also the proud owner of a heavy relic'd Junior and the mojo that guitar has just blew my mind. It not only made me realise how much I was holding back when playing a new or ultra-clean guitar, it inspires me to try new things every time I pick it up. And that Junior growl, well... it never gets old. I sold a few guitars and decided I'm only buying Custom Shop guitars from now on. That worn-in (fits like a glove) feel, the playability, and craftsmanship is worth every penny to me. Whenever I have "that discussion" with friends on whether the guitars are worth it or not, I just put the guitar in their hands and that shuts them up pretty dang quick... then we fight about the fact that I want my guitar back😅

Tom mentions the guy from Brazil, like that guy I went to a guitar shop in Winterhaven Florida and played dozens of Les Pauls and several Vintage Les Pauls. I played each one for awhile and then Jimmy handed me a Murphy R8. The very first strum I knew instantly that this is my guitar. I didnt even have to plug it in!!! I thought to myself Ill go home and think over this and sleep on it, I didnt sleep all night and was at the store before they opened. I actually called the owner at home and told him I will be back in the morning. That was two years ago and its still my favorite guitar. I have a lot of guitars to choose from and The Murphy just speaks to me. Thank you Gibson and Tom

I don't know who in the lab did my 2023 Murphy lab heavy aged R9 But the aging work is incredible! It's not overdone and looks very authentic like the guitar was on tour for years and years.

He mentions Rio Grande pickups around the 23 minute mark! Got a fantastic sounding set of pups from those guys in my Strat! What a terrific company! Really really love the tone I get.

Due to cost I had to settle with a VOS 1959 Les Paul historic and regret not just waiting until I had the money. There is a huge difference between a VOS and a Murphy Lab R9!

Awesome interview! Tom is such a nice and down to earth guy. It's really cool to finally get to know the guy/creator behind the famous and awesome "Murphy Lab" aging. All the best!

I have much respect for the art involved in doing what they do, and while I can see the value in some famous rock star replicating a beloved old guitar so he can tour with it, I for one want my $10,000 Gibson Custom Shop guitar to be brand new and shiny with all of the best components, workmanship and processes used in the hay day of making the '59's, so as to age it myself over the decades myself..

Awesome to get Gibson to do any custom work. Murphy Lab thankfully came along , been pulling teeth to get a custom set up let alone a one off or original guitar. Good job Gibson do more custom work and great job Tom 🫶🎸

Murphy is no joke, have you ever seen him scrape binding on a les paul,a true pro in every aspect of guitar building, he created relics before they were even popular, he's a legend and a genius.

He hasn't scraped a guitar since 2004.

All good stuff.....but until Gibson Custom Shop begins to source dark, tight-grain "Premium" rosewood, and "Genuine Honduran Mahogany".......the reissue Custom Shop Les Pauls, ES models, and SGs will continue to MISS THE MARK. Tom Murphy knows exactly what I'm talking about, but he and his colleagues are not allowed to criticize Gibson's materials.

Love my Les Paul but not a relic fan. I love when a guitar is aged by me. Years of playing and beating up. The relics don’t have the same mojo or look as a natural aged guitar….. just my thoughts

"I want consumers to be happy". Says it all right there. I still don't get why anyone wants their guitar they spent upwards of 10 grand for, to not be perfect. There's no story in these guitars, no real play wear just makes it a fake to me.
