imo the easiest way to learn tones is forget about them and treat them like accents. I see people becoming too conscious of them, try too hard and end up sounding like they're hyperventilating.

In connected speech, I've noticed that tones tend to lose their distinctiveness. I don't know if it's due to me being a novice Mandarin learner.

I will never forget my second year Chinese class when we were learning 散步. The American kept saying "san bu" with questioning tones and the Chinese teacher would shake her head and say "san bu!" with emphatic fourth tones. They went for quite a long time before they figured it out, and I was laughing too hard to explain it to them. :)

I really enjoy your lessons here. Clear - easy to follow and understand. Great presenter - good graphics and you get down to teaching Chinese - without all the unnecessary and irrelevant chat! Thank you. PS; How about doing one for Teachers working in China - classroom things and simple daily classroom commands - would be helpful and much needed.

The tone change also emphasise the word you are trying to focus on, it's kind of useful when you are saying something like: " are you sure it's the (adj) (n.) that you are (adv.) (v.)?" If you are trying to emphasise one of the brackets, in addition to pronouncing it heavily, you also pronounce it "correctly" without tone change.

tone change: 3 + 3 becomes 2 + 3 is right. But tones change: 3 + 3 + 3 actually becomes 3 + 2 + 3 (first one is not affected) When you have tones like 3 + 3 + 3 + 3, then it'll be 2 + 3 + 2 + 3 (think of pairing) Just want to clarify here

I'm having trouble with the "r" in Pinyin. In this video, in "guo ran" you seem to combine both an r and zh sound. I can't seem to get it. Some instructors simply tell you it's like the s in measure, and I hear other Westerners simply use a standard r. They say everyone will understand. But I want to get it right. Any advice?
@JM-lh8rl4 жыл бұрын
Gregg Colamonico I don't speak any variant of Chinese, but according to some phonetic tables, you can think of it as a mix between an r and an l. You sort of curl your tongue a little bit so its bottom touches your palate. Think of it as an l that's deeper into your mouth than you normally pronounce it. Hope this helps

A little bit wrong... 333 = "3"23 你很好 (ni3 ye2 hao3) if you say 223 like the video, people are gonna think "mud is very good" (At least to me lol)
@learnchinesenow8 жыл бұрын
Say it slow and sure you can say it like that. But say it fast and you will definitely be doing it the way we show you in this video. Both ways a re acceptable.

Thank you for your reply. Please take a look at this: www.zhihu.com/question/24645389 - It's not that simple! not every 333 turns into 223 or you'll confuse the listener for a second.(especially native speakers like me) like I've *never* heard of "小水桶""總導演""你很美"pronounced 223. It's always 323. Please believe me although I'm not an expert. (I'm from Taiwan)

for the ni hao example when you change the tone of ni. is it like half of a 3rd tone or does it actually change to the 2nd tone.

Thank you, very interesting! A question regarding the 3rd-tone rule: Is the tone of 你 also changed in the sentence 认识你很高兴。? Sounds a bit odd to me due to rhytm and logical grouping, but then again - what do I know about mandarin.^^ Also (not covered in this video, but still interesting): Is there a rule when syllables lose their tone? I found - depending on the dictionary - 地方 as di4fang1 and di4fang5. I guess it won't matter that much in fast speech, but if you want to be veeery clear?

33->23 333=> 223 32=>42
@learnchinesenow2 жыл бұрын
I agree with you on the first two, but 32=>42 is not totally accurate, i would say the third tone before a second becomes a kind of chilled out 4th tone, but it is more like just the down part of a 3rd tone, not a sharp drop like a 4th tone normally is. So it is like 42*
@QuizmasterLaw2 жыл бұрын
@@learnchinesenow Wow! Thank you very much for replying! You know? You are one of the very best English sinologues. I mean that sincerely you are VERY impressive! I do look to you as an example that it IS possible for an anglophone to attain near native fluency in Chinese. More or less you're just about on the same level as Da Shan, even if less famous (I did not want fame, some do). I wrote what I wrote because I needed/wanted a convenient way to remember the tone shifts. I know it wasn't perfectly accurate, but is better than nothing. Thank you for correcting me!

On another video (that youtube won't let me paste here) they are clearly pronouncing 3rd 3rd 3rd as 3rd, 2nd 3rd. Any idea why this would be? Let me attempt to share the video link .... crap, it won't let me. Will you take my word that this is the case?
@learnchinesenow8 жыл бұрын
+g00glian0 see the comment below by +sierra I think that is a good way of explaining it, basically the language is organic and so sometimes it can depend on what you are saying, like if there is more of a natural break between the first and second character then yeah you would probably pronounce the first as a third tone. But if it was a three character word like 展覽館 zhǎn lǎn guǎn (exhibition hall) then you would follow the method in this video. Maybe we can go into more depth about this in a future video. If you were saying the example we gave in this video nǐ hěn hǎo, i think it would depend on the speed you say it at, if you say it slow, you may say it as 323 but if you say it fast you will definitely say 223
@learnchinesenow8 жыл бұрын
+g00glian0 also. I'm curious, which channel teaches it that way?
