The Distortion Plus that MXR has been selling since Dunlop took over does not sound the same. Trust me....I have the Modern version, a Vintage Version and the RR model. The modern version does not include the same components.

Exactly right. I had one back in the early 80s and while it was ok, Boss had better pedals. If people want to sound like Randy then get a Kempler. Otherwise, your out of luck because Randy's real sound came out of his hands but also out of his speakers. He replaced his marshall speakers with Altec speakers which they don't make anymore. This distortion+ won't do it.

Here’s an idea: DON’T BUY IT! This pedal has been around for 50 years. And this version has very little to do with a guitarist who’s been dead for 45 years. Do you really need a polka dot version so bad you’re willing to drop a grand on it? There are a million better sounding options.

Hey, Dude... You're saying "Don't buy it." With only 3,200 units on the entire planet, damned few can or will be able to 'buy it.' I've A/B/C'd my MXR Series 2000 D+ (from 1983), my Dunlop-era D+, and the RR104. The RR104 has more gain than either previous iteration, and there's a bit of compression ala the JCM-800. And it looks more cool, too. I'm guessing that you're just upset because this item sold out before you could order one. I bought two; one for play, and one for pay. (I ran my comparisons through an EVH Iconic Series 5150 15w with an added 1×12 using a Gibson Les Paul Deluxe. This pedal can scream if you're using the right rig, which, of course, I'm using.

Controversial opinion. If some one is willing to buy the pedal for $1299, then that is the value of the pedal for that person. If they can afford it, they don't think they got ripped off. "Worth" is subjective. Most of the rancour that I have seen stems from the limited run, i.e. people are angry they didn't get one, despite the release date being announced well in advance. Like, if you knew it was on 8/20 and had the Sweetwater app, you could have got one. How do I know? I have one. Bought off Sweetwater at about 8:00AM on release day. Wasn't hard.

The pedal I got was bought from Motor City Guitars! The guy sent me the receipt! He said that he was able to buy a few pedals and sell them for a few dollars more!. So your store sold this guy several of these pedals! I got it for $ 400, which to me isn't bad for a limited-edition pedal! I had this pedal on order for several months, and they had been given a few pedals and that was it! I called Dunlop and they said it was a limited run and they had no plans on making any more! So yes .this is a dick move, and I would never have paid 1200, or even 600, but this is just like ticket scalpers, and they have never gone away! Randy was my guitar teacher for 2 years and also my neighbor, so I did want to see if they did a good job, it's sounds good but it doesn't sound anything like Randy's pedal! Maybe after it was modded when it was put in his custom pedalboard! Anyway, your little store did a dick move and I agree with you, but, to me, 400 was not that much! And not buying them to make a point is not a good move if you really want one. But buying one for ridiculous prices like anything over 600 I wouldn't do, but some people will! It is no different than a ticket scalper! There is always someone out there to take advantage of an idiot move by Dunlop/MXR or anyone that makes people have to do these stupid things!

First I love gear, I have had tons of guitars, amps, pedals, worked for a vintage dealer for a while and was fortunate to play all the premium vintage stuff. That being said there is not one piece of gear ever created that is worth over paying for. If you want to sound more like your favorite artist, study the player not the gear. Buying gear is fun but it’s not a short cut to putting in the time practicing. Rhoads tone is bright, middy Marshall. Get some gear together that can do that and the rest is up to you. You will get a lot farther studying Rhoads technique than his gear. Now if you want this pedal, sweet, I get it. But you can afford to wait. And in the mean time practice Randy Rhoads the player

Exactly unfortunately musicians are really dumb at falling for media marketing garbage. Let's face it. Randy's guitar tone was terrible. So many people buy so much crap and overpay for it only to be disappointed and learn that they're just not that good of a guitar player. Don't realize that to get that sound you're looking for you. You have to have thousands of dollars worth of studio crap and studio magic to make it sound how it sounds.

The thing is these pedals don't sound like Randy Rhoads. You have to use them through a cranked Marshall or something similar. But it has to be cranked up until it feeds back (squeals) when you are not playing anything then you will get the Randy sound.

I used to own a regular MXR distortion + and it became my least favorite pedal after I used it for about a year!!! I ended up giving the pedal away to a co worker buddy who was just starting out on playing the electric guitar as a Christmas gift!!! I gave him the distortion + and electro harmonix clone pedal for Christmas!!! He really ejoyed them pedals with his dinky little Peavey amp and Epiphone SG !!! LOL 😊😊😊

Kathy Rhoads posted about the release date in early August. When the date came, I totally forgot about it until late in the evening, by then it was too late, the pedal was sold out everywhere. I wasn't about to spend double, triple, quadruple... for it. Kathy posted that they're trying to get Dunlop/MXR to release it (not keep it limited) so everyone that wants one, can get one.

Oh, thanks for saying something on this topic. I did learn something from this great video. These people don't want to work at their careers, so they really are just bacteria desperate for 50 cents worth. But that's the behaviour of some band wagon jumpers. They screwed the EVH 35th Anniversary pedals. $1300 US. I can get 2 EVH amplifiers for that asking price 😏 They stuffed the Jimi Hendrix birthday 🎂 pedal set too. The Gold dunlop WAH pedal. Kirk Hammett pedals and valve amplifiers. These scum walked into the retailers and stole those amplifier sections out of those Randall amplifiers and then the stores couldn't replace those limited sections and they had to make those amplifiers disappear. At that time in the 2000s, nobody realised Kirk was intending to ALWAYS limit supply for everything he sells. The public just assumes wrongly that products will get regular production runs but that's not what happens. Those 2005 Eddie Van Halen guitars flew out of the stores and I've never seen any of them after that. Within 1 or 2 months of the stores offering them for sale at retail prices they jumped $2000. How can you get pricing for retail, so wrong.

I have three MXR distortion + pedals, one normal modern made unit. An original ‘78 block logo with Wampler mods that make it so it doesn’t thin out as you turn the gain up. And a reissue script logo, no power jack or led. I think I am all set. Oh yeah, also have a Chinese made pedal that toggles between Ross distortion, DOD 250 preamp, and distortion +. Not to mention like 4-5 original Ross distortion pedals. I think I am good, pretty sure this Randy Rhoads pedal doesn’t have anything I already don’t have.

youre complaining about a product that is literally designed to exhibit the inherent effect youre complaining about. ITS A LIMITED EDITION COLLECTABLE, its limited so that the supply is less than the market demands. Its for people to collect. in addition to the fact: its not like you cant experience a distortion+ circuit buy just buying a normal one. its the same argument as: I sure wish the collectors edition of this book I like wasn't so damn collectable!

Oh YEAH! THIS CONCEPT OF talking 👄 about people behind their back and 'making them famous'. The WW1 generation WAS WELL AWARE OF this natural human behaviour. So is religion. But YOUR generation missed out of this type of assistance. You didn't just miss it in childhood, no, you guys missed it throughout your entire life. This IS why 99% of YOU end up in jail when they decide to have a go at you. The old saying is true; You ARE what you do. You spend your time doing it, the end result IS only jail or the grave. Even the guys who WEREN'T back stabbing people, went to the grave or jail. This happened BECAUSE they didn't choose their time wisely. There's only 2% who don't go to jail. 1% is the fully insane and the other, IS not the copy cats or gossips. Only 1% of the 98% have a chance to leap across to the 1% who walk from all courtrooms. The internet HAS NOW TAUGHT YOU and it's only taught you just now cause I've realised a person has to speak cause the people up the top of the ladder 🪜 of success ARE too stupid to see their own influence on everyone below them.

This is always a customers' fault. You buy into the hype of magical pedals, magical components and the "they don't make it like they used to" and basically feed the existence of the people who will take advantage of you. "Rarity" is just a word. EVERYTHING is replicable today. If you want a Klon and they cost +++£ instead of buying just a clone of a Kwon (which obviously SOUNDS THE SAME) they you jack up the prices. If you buy an original 59' Les Paul for +++£ and you think its magical...well you created that price yourself. There are many guitars same or better than a 59' for a reasonable price. I would never buy something that is not within a reasonable price....I agree with every word you said here.

The people at fault are the manufacturers. People have been buying & selling limited edition items since the beginning of money. They could easily make more but they don’t. Called AMS… No problem. $179 plus tax and it was at my house in two days. I have been a huge Randy Rhoads fan for over 40 years and I feel kind of bad that I bought the pedal because I don’t think I’ll ever even open it. his playing was absolutely groundbreaking and technically phenomenal, but his tone really wasn’t good… Diary got better and his live tone was pretty good, but it was sorely lacking in a lot of aspects. It’s just gonna sort of be like a voodoo trinket or something sitting there and urging me to play better. But whatever… People are gonna do whatever they’re gonna do. And you can’t be mad about that.

In another hobby/interest I'm in, there is a shop that gets a lot of limited production (not limited to number, but rather by what wasn't used to fill contracts) that has strict rules on those things: One or two per household, per year. Ordering more, using another account, or any other way they catch people in violation, all of the orders are canceled and you're barred from using their site any longer. I don't know how effective they are all around, but it's one of the only places where when I get the 'back in stock' email, there's a good chance there are still some left by the time I get to the site. It doesn't stop scalpers from raiding other sites' inventories, but it makes for more loyal customers to this one.
