The Tonewood amp is a great way to add effects to your acoustic guitar, without needing to tow around an amplifier and pedals. The big question is, is it worth the money for what it can do? That's what I discuss in this video. Hope you enjoy! Become a Patron and receive exclusive lessons, worksheets, live workshops, and more!

Worth pointing out that you can designate it to up to 5 guitars. Saving the settings for each one. Putting the TWA on is relatively simple but take time to go through their instructions to avoid feedback issues. Very rewarding little device..love mine

Thanks for the review. I've also just gotten one and wanted to comment that I do feel that the volume does get amplified as well. So it's a great deal considering that, the effects and the sheer portability and ease of use.

Invest in some good quality Panasonic rechargeable batteries as they will last much longer,also use a small strip of sellotape to join the batteries together for the two inline ones as this will help get them out of the unit because rechargeables are slightly fatter than the non rechargeables. Eneloop pro recommended.

I had the same Taylor 414 as you except without the cutaway and noticed that you still have the stock nut and saddle and they've yellowed. Those micarta/tusq on your Taylor are basically plastic which is why its yellowed. You will get a better sound if you swap the nut and saddle for bone or fossilized ivory is even better (my personal recommendation) As a bonus the upgrade will make the guitar look newer since those parts will be white not yellowed You will get more low end and overall resonance. This is an essential upgrade on every Taylor guitar.

Yes it’s worth it to me. I always have rechargeable batteries on hand and I enjoy playing my Martin more when it’s available. Why they didn’t include a lithium rechargeable pack inside and just plug it up for the night to keep it charged, that would have been perfect.

The back of the guitar is acting as the cone in a speaker, and since it is the material that produces the sound in the first place, it should sound perfect! The back of the tonewood box has a transponder that vibrates the back. The sound is also vibrating the front, which is generating good feedback….. why it sounds natural.

I've been thinking about getting one of these for my Fender Malibu Player. It's a beautiful guitar that's really well built, but the sound is very empty and soulless, so I'm hoping something like the Tonewood could compensate for what the instrument lacks on it's own and give it some depth and soul. One question: How quickly does it drain AA batteries?

I haven’t tried one of these, but if it’s anything like the transacoustic system, although it won’t add volume as such, it adds massively to the presence of the instrument. It’s like playing in a large, reverberative hall, which gives the impression of extra volume.

Sound comes from the whole guitar body. Like your car playing your stereo. Small speakers inside a car, but outside the jam on boys bass is huge because the whole body of the car transmits the sound. If your into acoustic engineering, the larger surface is a better impedance match to air & transmits better.

When you remove the inside piece does it damage the guitar? From it having adhesive
@DavidPierceCHT
@DavidPierceCHT 3 жыл бұрын
This reply is rather late in coming as I just discovered this video. So you’ve probably already made your decision regarding this product. I’ve installed The internal magnets on several guitars. The first one was on a voyage air guitar, and I put additional magnetic attachment brackets and other guitars I owned so that I could use the TWA on other guitars. The adhesive on the foam stickers he is not super aggressive and I have been able to remove the magnetic bracket from inside my voyage air guitar when I took it on international flights (the airlines prohibited transporting magnets, the Chinese are super strict about this). In any case a direct answer to your question is that I have not observed any damage to the guitar by removing The internal magnetic brace.

The tonewood needs to use a pickup or mic inside to work. This review doesn't explain things, you are watching someone bemused by magic, rather than understanding the technology and science.

It removes easily off the back of the guitar, by magnets. I put it in my little compartment in my case and just place it on the back of my guitar when ready to play. There's no uninstalling required. You just install the magnetized brace on the inside of the guitar 1 time.

What would be the increase in volume or presence would you say percentage wise, and can it take an AC adapter?
@DavidPierceCHT
@DavidPierceCHT 3 жыл бұрын
I've owned two of these things over the years (first one got burnt up along with my home and my town by the Camp Fire in 2018). It does not have an outboard power port. You may be able to rig one with one of the usb ports but you need to know what you are doing or you could fry this thing. It does not significantly increase the volume of the instrument. You really don't want it to as that would increase the likelihood of generating feedback. It is essentially an attachable, battery powered, efx processor and speaker driver. It adds efx to the sound of your guitar by driving your guitar body like a speaker cone.
@cormacscanlan
@cormacscanlan 3 жыл бұрын
Tonewood state that the increase is between 3 and 9dB depending on playing style, with fingerstyle and single notes being on the higher end. 6dB (middle of that range) is about twice the volume, so the range in increase as a percentage would be about 40% on the low end to 180% on the high end.

Aside from applying effects, how well does this device actually amplify your guitar? Does it get really loud?
@DavidPierceCHT
@DavidPierceCHT 3 жыл бұрын
It doesn't amplify it a whole lot, and you don't really want it to, as that would increase the likelihood of generating feedback. The "Amp" part of its name is perhaps a mite misleading. I would characterize it as an attachable, battery powered, multi-efx processor/speaker driver. It adds efx to your acoustic sound by driving the body of your guitar like a speaker cone.

I'm finding this out indeed. I try to turn it up and I'm getting a lot of feedback, it's a trip. Depending on the placement seems to be making feedback worse but I'm surprised that there is a lot of feedback.

I don't know if you got the answer to how it works, but here's my view of it, having one of my own installed on my Martin. The Tonewood Amp box contains an actuator - an arm of maybe a couple of inches long, that vibrates the guitar at the point of iits contact. If you look at the back of the unit you'll see this mechanical actuator, a rubber pad that makes direct contact with the back of your guitar. Without the actuator pad, it does nothing. The guitar signal is used to drive an amplifier into the actuator arm in an electrical-to-mechanical conversion, causing the actuator to vibrate, and you know as well as I that if something's (a guitar) vibrating in the spectrum we can hear, it makes a sound in the air - unless you're in a vacuum, which we can dismiss out-of-hand. Depending on the guitar, it uses it as the resonator and mixer of the combination, uniting the played acoustic energy from the natural guitar sound strings with additive signals coming from the vibrating actuator imparted vibes/sounds. Think of it as an extra set of virtual strings inside the guitar. And the signal processing and effects are a whole other subject. But that's the basic, clever premise of this amp.

Pat , incredible description for this device but obviously some of these commentor's just didn't watch the video because it mentions having a pickup on your guitar or the adapter can be bought others just not listening or they wouldn't be saying you can't use it on stage with a P.A or amp , which the video clearly tells them u can ... I have played a Yamaha transacoustic and found it spectacularly good. This looks like a fantastic invention and variation on the theme. Unfortunately, it also looks like a lot of (fiddly) fuss and bother, a bit invasive of the instrument and ending up clunky - a large box sticking out of the back of the guitar. They say it eats batteries too. The effects created are wonderful. It might be worth £250, just to see what it’s like in reality. I’m in two minds about it.

Yes. It has a DI mode as well, and you can adjust the blend of signal (efx processor / pickup balance) being sent out to the board.

There are 3 reverbs, a delay, 2 tremolos, an autowah, an overdrive, and another weird effect I haven’t figured out yet. The reverbs and delays are the real selling point

It's absolutely useful live because you can use the output into a pa or amp. Decent review, but you should research better ahead of time. It has settings where you could do a DI into an amp or pa, or have it come out of the guitar itself AND use the DI. It's basically perfect for playing for large audiences.

I agree that the not knowing it had an output thing could’ve been a bit embarrassing but I really like the fact that it seems genuinely like he took it out of the box that day. I’ve really been trying not to buy this thing for a while but I think I’m sold.

@@christophergray6211 I literally just got mine. I just need to have it installed (my guitar needs a setup anyway, so I'm gonna just have it installed by whoever I hire to do that). I'm pretty stoked to try this thing!

@@JasonZimmerman1980 so get this you can run a midi program (midi guitar 2) and sample tank on your phone and it will sound like you have other instruments playing with the guitar you’re playing. And you can do that via Bluetooth!!! Ps I ordered mine yesterday. I still am waiting to see the product that people are using but there’s a tonewood amp users group on FB and they give feedback and tonewood is on there as a user to give advice and feedback as well.

@@christophergray6211 yeah. The only thing that sucks is it only works with some iphone app, from what I understand. I hate apple and use android and they don't support android yet. Still, this thing is a genius device that I'm sure I'm gonna have tons of fun with.

Either the reverb has waaaay too long a decay or something else is wrong. Not at all a natural decay. I heard this on another demo.

You can adjust all decay times and intensities with the knobs, there are 3 different reverbs. His was just on the default settings and needs tweaked

I don't know how to describe this, but the reverb sounds tuned to a specific pitch, and if I had to pick the pitch, I'd say it's E. It doesn't sound 'neutral' and I admit I don't care for it. Does anyone else hear it or understand what I'm saying?

They have one that comes with a pickup that you place in the sound hole, for guitars without built-in pickups.

So you don't need a pickup for this?
@SimplifiedGuitar
@SimplifiedGuitar 3 жыл бұрын
If you have an acoustic that can plug in (has a 1/4'' jack input) then you don't need a pickup. If your acoustic has no plug in port, then you need to get the tonewood amp that comes with a pickup. (choose the Tonewood Amp + Pickup Bundle) The pickup is a bar that fits across the soundhole of your guitar. It's an extra $50 for this.
