If anyone is interested this is how I solved the last question without looking it up in what I think is a pretty reasonable manner. First I laid out what I know and what I think most people know or at least have heard of. 1. The speed of light is 3*10^8 m/s 2. It takes 8 minutes for the suns light to get to earth 3. There are ~1.5 km in a mile That’s all we need! Here are the calculations: 1. Divide the speed of light by 1000 because we want it in km 2. Divide that by 1.5 because we want it in miles. Now we have the speed of light in miles/sec. 3. Multiply that by 60, that’s the speed of light in miles/minute 4. Multiply that by 8, and you get the speed of light in miles/8 minutes, or the suns distance, and we have the answer! ((3*10^8)/1000)/1.5)*60*8 = 96000000 So my answer was 2 million off. Thanks for reading!

@hmm23265 жыл бұрын
I worked it out differently, bear in mind i just did my astrophysics a level and maths a level so stuff is fresh in my mind. I remembered that it is one astronomical unit from the sun to earth, but couldnt remember the conversion rate so used the definition of a parsec, which is the distance where the angle subtended against a distance of one astronomical unit is one arcsecond. A parsec is 3.26 light years, one light year is 9.46*10^15 m, therefore multiplied those together. Then using the small angle formula, in radians, I multiplied my parsec value by π/(180*3600) to get a rough value in m from earth to sun. Then converted to miles by dividing by 1000 and then again by 1.6. I got 94.5 million.

20,000 miles away? THE CIRCUMFERENCE of the EARTH is 24,000 miles! The fucking moon is 238,900 miles from the Earth and that's our closest neighbor. Not even close.
@manip19808 жыл бұрын
they could have just estimated the difference in lightspeed. it's nearly common knowledge that it takes around 8 minutes for the sunlight to reach earth. So, it'll be around 8 minutes multiplied by lightspeed which is 300,000 km/s. Each mile is 1.6 km so it'll take a minute of calculation in your mind to approximate it's way above 20 or 40 thousand. My first guess was 90 million. guess it was pretty close.

I am merely trying to keep my words short, you want to try to compare that to the earth being 20 000 miles from the sun??
