"Tonight You Belong to Me" was written by lyricist Billy Rose and composer Lee David. The first ever recording was made by Irving Kaufman in 1926 on Banner Records. In 1927 Gene Austin recorded it and the song became a major hit. In the original version, the first verse clearly established that the song is about two lovers who reunite and "belong" to each other for one night.
In 1956, Patience and Prudence sang a version which featured a duet with compelling harmony and reached #4 on the Billboard charts. Patience and Prudence were children when they recorded their version so for obvious reasons the first verse was eliminated and thus the original context removed. Their version of the song has been covered extensively by many artists through the years.
Notably, the song was sung as a duet by Steve Martin and Bernadette Peters in the 1979 film "The Jerk," with accompaniment on ukulele and cornet. I was struck by the very somber and somewhat depressing way the song was sung. I also thought it was odd that she had a coronet along with her on their walk along the ocean for use during the instrumental section.
Based on my reaction, I reimagined this song depicting the original theme of two former lovers being reunited for one night. Surely they would be happy and excited to be together again!
To reflect this theme, the original first verse was restored and some of the lyrics were updated. Many of the minor chords were replaced by more uplifting chords. The instrumental section was replaced by a whistling duet.
In this demo, the graphics and the female voice were generated by AI. My intention is to clean up the vocals and add surround sound for a more final cut, but this demo version gives a sense of my reimagining for this sweet song.
