Toning Cyanotype with Tannic Acid

Found something different in my closet to try toning Cyanotypes with.
I am not sure about all of the results that were presented in this video but I may try tannic acid again with some other prints in the way that I processed print number three.
This is the first time that I have ever resulted with a toned Cyanotype print so close to a black, (print #3), and this is something that I have been thinking about and wanting to try to achieve with Cyanotype on glass.
It is unfortunate that the colors of the toned Cyanotype prints in the video do not appear to be true to what they look like in reality, the tonal ranges on all three prints are quite beautiful.

I like the warmth of prnt 2. I use green tea for toning and I really love its warmth. It's cheap as well. :-)

@@NicoleSmallOneonOne I first saw it on You Tube. It; doesn't look so dark, even in a strong infusion. but I've found it very good. So many variables I guess-paper and water and so on. :--)

Thanks for sharing, 3 very interesting results, I like the 1st because it seems to be more black in the highlights and preserve some blue (cyan) tones in the dark.

Both 2 & 3 I would say happily fall under the traditional Pictorialist style of tone for 1900, Print No1 looks too modern, tone looks like the typical image you see people doing today on Flickr. So my money is on 2 although not strictly pure black. This is more like a Kasebier print. Lovely.

I think it's worth toning because as much as I appreciate cyanotype blue too much of anything isn't good and these toned prints look very much like a turn of the century lithograph print. It's a lengthy process that I don't know if I would have the guts to do regularly though

HI Aloy. I agree, sometimes it is nice to have few different toned Cyanotype prints in the mix. It might seem lengthy because of the toning time, but it does not always have to be toned for that long and while it is toning, you are not doing much other than waiting for the time to end.

Thanks for this and your other cyanotype videos! Have you tried toning with wine tannin? If so, how does it compare with tannic acid? Supposedly winje tannin is easier to use (in terms of dissolving in water etc.), so I wondered what advantages tannic acid might have to justify the complications.

Hi Max! You are very welcome, I love digging down into the process. I have read about wine tannin but I have never tried it. Maybe I will give it a try and make a comparison with tannic acid.😊
