Toninho Horta - Mountain Flight

Tom Lellis is truly a great jazz singer. This song is one of the hardest songs in the Latin jazz repertory. Every phrase is slightly different or in a slightly different "temporary" key. This isn't one of his best performances, but I've heard him "nail" this song which is a real feat. Not only that, every chord is "altered" (musicians reading this will know exactly what I'm saying) with no "standard" cord following to allow the player to "recoup". And he's doing this at the piano. Bravo !!

I heard this song on my car radio while I was driving here in San Francisco, and pulled over. Wow! what a beautiful version. Love Lellis's style.

I love the pianist - Rique Pantoja in this. When he plays I see gusts of snow, rain, and lightning. I can hear thunder and golden, crashing cymbals and see the full disc of the sun - on the horizon - from the mountain top.

+hoppy318. Estoy completamente de acuerdo con tus observaciones que me voy a permitir apostillar. Confirmo que Lellis es un modernisimo jazzsinger y que el tema Mountain Flinght es melodicamente muy dificil de cantar, como casi todos lo de TH. Cuando dices "every phrase is a sligthly different temporary key", los musicos lo explicamos diciendo que tiene unas modulaciones o cambios de armonias y tonalidades muy seguidas y variadas, sobre las que la melodia vuela planeando como una elegante gaviota. Tambien te confirmo lo de los acordes alterados: Cada acorde tiene sus notas intercaladas a una altura fijada, cuando se trata de musica popular, pero en el jazz se usan dos nuevas aportaciones tecnicas: la extensión armonica y las alteraciones de notas. Con la extension, los acordes han dejado de tener tres o cuatro notas para pasar a cinco, seis y siete notas no repetidas, lo que se llama acordes de novena, oncena y trecena, pero a su vez las alteraciones, modifican en un semitono ascendente o descendente cualquiera de las extensiones. En definitiva, es una tecnica armonica muy expresiva y evolucionada, dentro de la tonalidad. En cuanto a Lellis, hay que resaltar que tiene un registro bellisimo, varonil por los graves a lo Barry White, Nat Cole, o Bing Crosby, que vuelve locas a muchas mujeres y por los agudos es perfecto, no le cambia el timbre de voz por subirla. Un gran placer el sexteto de TH tan extraordinario y original que no esta al alcance de cualquiera. Al respecto no le vendria mal al grupo, intercalar estandars de bossa y jazz con todo el feeling y el swing del be-bop. Echo de menos la practica del scat. No se puede tener todo. Un saludo a todos los "oidos profundos".

don't know what planet those of you are from who think tom's singing is beautiful??? his singing interferes and obscures the toninho's gorgeous playing and melody...he is way out of his league doing toninho's music....he sounds like a lounge singer on a low budget cruise ship to me.

Contrary to your comment the Singer's doing a very good job though. English speaking audiences will have to be made happy too!!! It's always very hard to have the parts organised in a live situation without clashing when you have full piano and guitar rhythm competing. In a studio one of them would certainly be almost wiped out of the recording for clear definition. Guitar playing has to be very subtle (as well as the piano) So you can't expect them to play melody lines on top of the voice. A musician knows to play less as bpm increases. It's all sweet when playing a bossa at 80bpm but a samba played at 180-200 requires a very controlled (less)playing or it'll be a minestrone soup. Bottom line is majority of people unfortunately cannot enjoy/comprehend instrumentals.
