This was the great Geffen period when Pat and Lyle had complete artistic control to produce and release content with NO corporate interference from A&R or finance personnel. Geffen basically gave them the keys to the studio and all the time needed for composing, recording, and release.

One thing I was just admiring is how percussionist Armando Marcal is visible in almost every shot, and shows his beautiful contribution to the groove along with drummer Paul Wertico. This whole thing is so beautifully shot - every angle shows at least three musicians, and you can tell that they are all totally locked into each other. And the camera catches many specific important musical moments and interactions. And the sound is great. Everything I've ever seen from "Night Music" has first class from a technical and artistic perspective. None of that "showing the singers ear during the guitar solo" kind of concert movie lameness.

For me this is golden era Metheny-Mays/Group music. It's the period of Pat's career (Lyle's, too) that I enjoyed the most and I wish it had lasted longer. But as time went on, it evolved into something different, and it never captured my attention in the same way. The Way Up and Speaking Of Now were the albums that marked the fading of the legendary Pat Metheny Group, at least for me. While I practically wore out every Group album before those two, those two didn't get a lot of replays.

The Way Up is really cool too though. It’s a totally different vibe altogether. I definitely agree it doesn’t have the same kind of synth magic like Last Train Home or the tunes on Letter from Home.

@@Turboy65 My go-to PMG album is First Circle. Maybe it’s because the first time I heard them live (Tampa Theatre, November 1984) was on that tour. Transcendent.

I saw this lineup at a nice theatre , the sound was stellar but the guy sitting next to me had sinus problems , kept wheezing , sniffling . Talk about someone getting in the way of something so amazing to listen to .

Everyone always seems to forget Steve Rodby on bass

Bassists more often than not generally get overlooked by listeners (especially in rock), when in fact a great bassist will always enhance the guitar so much. Guitarists get auditions. Bassists get gigs.
