Alan, certainly it is! I sometimes have the honour to serve voluntarily as a captain on the BUSSARD during the Kiel-week ("Kieler Woche"), it´s great! Then, at other times, I just help bunkering coal, so I´m a trimmer then ... it depends, which service is necessary at that very moment and as we are all volunteers anyway, everybody helps wherever it is necessary. While certainly it has be kept in mind, that those people serving as engineers ore navigators need to have a valid certificate of competency. My main profession is to be a sea pilot on the east part of the Kiel-Canal and the Kiel-Fjord. Jürgen Marth

What wonderful steamships! After two world wars and a depression Germany managed to keep a number of these in service, we ,on the other hand (USA) went through the same and destroyed almost all of our steam fleets.

Yes, that's so pity. Many old sailing ships have been rescued or reconstructed, which is nice, but the old steamships were carelessly scrapped in the 1950s to 1960s. They were no longer economical. This ship was as a buoy tender in government service and was saved. Also we have received in Germany, two old steam icebreakers and a Ship what built as Hamburg's state yacht. All this ships were last in the government service and are today museum ships. Then there are 3 steam passenger ships and a few steam tugboats, but that is all that could be obtained from seagoing vessels. No old cargo ship, no old warship, everything went through the blast furnaces. But on rivers, there are still many old Paddle steamer what you can be proud of. Most of this ships 100 to 150 years old. Fortunately, not everything was destroyed or scrapped after the war for commercial reasons. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hmSUi6OGZ5yCr9k

I am a steamboat and steam whistle enthusiast. Our good old U.S.A. is pathetic on preserving our history and heritage with ships and architechual masterpieces, brownstone mansions, buildings and such. Our best ocean liner, the "United States" is corroding away and no one gives a dam to restore and preserve it. I have seen so, so much lost in my 76 years. Sadly, our historical societies lack money, influence, authority and support.

She seems to have a real knock in her low pressure connecting rod bearing. Wait, I'm not bitching; this is a superb ship. I own a 1923 fully restored private railcar in the US that I run, even now, on Amtrak. I know all about fixing old stuff. One question: did the OLYMPIC class liners do the thump, thump, thump stuff at 78 rpm (with two engines- to make 22.5 knots)? I can't believe they did that anymore than we would expect our cars to thump us off the road at high speeds. Before you laugh, think about this.

You raise a good point AND you make sense. I have only seen 1 video of a triple expansion engine in which the connecting rods were completely silent at all RPMs. I think it was of a US battleship. 😀

Interesting to see how the old engines works. Being Norwegian I understood most of the settings on the telegraph dial plate without using Google Translate, and the context helps a lot as well. Just one question: Does the paddle steamer "Freya" that you were passing at about 8:20 have a propeller as well? It looks like it has the characteristic vortex of a propeller in the wake behind the ship visible at 8:23. Greetings from Norway!
@callsigndd9ls897
@callsigndd9ls897 2 жыл бұрын
The paddle steamer "Freya" (build in 1905) is powered by a 2-cylinder compound steam engine for the paddles wheels. Optionally, the ship can also be driven with a 400 hp diesel engine via a propeller.

Sind da Filter für die Abgase vorhanden?
@folkestender2025
@folkestender2025 5 жыл бұрын
@Beimann_1973
@Beimann_1973 2 ай бұрын
@@folkestender2025 Trifft wohl auf den Feinstaubanteil zu, alle anderen Emissionen sind genauso schädlich. Rauch ist auch nichts Anderes als Abgas.

This is a steam powered pump that pumps the water from the condenser back into the water storage. Unlike locomotives, steam is not lost on ships after they have worked in the machine. The Steam is cooled in the condenser by cooling water (sea water) from the outside and as water is then pumped back into the water storage.
@matthewbeasley7765
@matthewbeasley7765 3 жыл бұрын
2:04 is a duplex feed pump. It pumps the water from the hotwell (storage tank) into the boiler. This pump is independently steam driven. There are two sets of steam & water cylinders. The steam cylinders are on the left and the water cylinders are on the right. The little linkages drive the valves to control the steam in the cylinder. At 2:09 are the "air" pump and circulating pump. The "air" pump pumps both air and water out of the condenser. The condenser cools the exhaust steam into water using seawater going through tubes. The condenser is built into the frame and is the green oval shape behind most of the crank and connecting rod shots. The circulating water pump moves seawater through the tubes. Both are driven by a "walking beam" lever from the high pressure crosshead.

Ist Achtung so eine Art Leerlauf?
@diverhans1
@diverhans1 6 жыл бұрын
