Tontar, We first met the day you were leaving Marina Beach for the Great Northwest when I was a brand new HG student. Over the long haul we ended up sharing friends like Briggs C. Chris C. and Jim J. After all these years, Briggs and I are still friends. Like you, now I'm an old hand. Worth noting, there's a copy of your aerobatic clinic manual in my library. While I've never been a true aero pilot, your instruction helped make me a better pilot. So, while even today I can hear still Briggs chanting, "Fly the glider!," the meat you put on the bone was the substance I needed. This is my long way of putting perspective to "Be That Guy" being my favorite hang gliding video of all time. It's a spectacular piece of work. And for your helping, even by proxy, making me a better pilot. It's been a great life with so many incredible memories. But the Morning Glory in Australia beckons. South America. France. Maybe we'll meet on launch or a paddock someday. If so, beers are on me. Frank

The music is perfect for this video! I bought the entire album! Probably the best HG video ever. For the first time in six years, I actually forwarded a HG video to my co workers. Fantastic.

Depends on the weather. Gliders are always gliding without power, down through the air. On a good day, the air will be going up here or there, and we get in that rising air and go up with it. On those days, you can stay up a long time and fly a long distance too.

This is my favorite video on KZbin...period. It's also one of the most personally inspiring things I've ever seen. This video serves as the apex of my piqued interest in this sport, and I'm now certain that this will become a part of my life. Thank you for posting!!

I learned to fly there...40 years ago. There was still oil leaking to the surface from the gas stations in the Sunken City. Landing was in that field to the right. Great Video...brought back memories. Thanks

This is a stock Wills Wing T2 hang glider. Most high performance hang gliders can loop with the right pilot. It takes a desire and practice to be good, or be safe, however you want to look at it. The gliders are capable, but not every pilot is. :-) The frame is aluminum and carbon fiber. Check the Wills Wing website for details.

It happens quick, but at 2:16 look in the upper left corner. That is a huge bald eagle flapping past. That day there were several baldies flying with us, and while they look small because of the wide angle lens, they were actually quite large and extremely close in with us, circling and thermaling in the same lift. How totally awesome to be able to fly with such birds!

Oh, by the way, I want to point out that the glider with the yellow leading edge is my wonderful wife, Kerie, and the glider with the all white top is our buddy Rob (a new pilot this year).

@aerospin1 Thanks! At high speeds and low angles of attack, the flow over the bottom surface sucks the bottom down near the leading edges. Just like that Bernoulli trick blowing over paper causes it to suck to the airflow. It happens even with a positive angle of attack because of the leading edge thickness; the air hits it and is deflected both up and down, like blasting a round pole with a water hose. Behind that downward bulging, the lower surface does go back to following the relative flow.

Good to be worried about stuff like that. :-) Something interesting about loops is that if doing a loop straight over seems different from the wingovers one has been doing previously, then it's probably not a good idea to try to loop. It's a big subject I'd be happy to talk about elsewhere, but essentially doing straight over loops should be a very small change from the wingovers leading up to them in difficulty. Small progressive steps are better than big, unknown steps.

What thoughts? Hmmm, what a great sport this is, how lucky we are to be able to do it, and this is about as close to bird flight as it gets. Very cool, very fun, and a lot of good people who do it and are great to hang around with.

@lti12 Not exactly. I was sponsored by Red Bull, for quite a number of years. Their support was most unusual in the States, as very few companies seem interested in sponsoring hang gliding, and was incredibly appreciated. However, I always acquired my own gear.

Nice film. I want to start filming too for some time now, and also taking pictures. I have a hang glider camera mount but I mainly used a Sony cybershot picture camera for photos and filming. Can you tell me what kind of cameras do you use for this kind of quality? the name of camera and the resolution? Thanks. Awesome loops, maybe someday I will try that too.

Dreams are not given to you. They must be earned with patience, determination, focus, maturity. Teaching hang gliding is a very challenging task....so even imparting the dream to others requires equal patience, determination, focus. That is why they are so few instructors. You get what you are willing give. I used to drive five hours from Philadelphia to North Carolina for my lessons.

Sems to me your psychic powers need quite a bit of fine tuning. The pilots I was "bothering" were my wife, and a couple other flying buddies, who were not bothered at all. That's the way we fly. Whether you noticed them looking or not isn't a concern. They know how to use their eyes, they see and saw just fine. As far as your other insights go, there's no need to debate. I've seen your posting style and feel honored to get insulted by a world class insulter.
